Insisting on getting dressed every day in school holidays

Hello
I am curious about what the consensus is on this. I am happy to sit in pjs all day if im
not going anywhere and so am happy for dc to also do this. But I’m aware my ex and his family get dressed every single day without fail, regardless of whether they are going out or not. We are always clean and showered etc. just not dressed for the outside world.

so yabu-people should get dressed every day, regardless of activity
Or yanbu -you agree with me and are happy to spend the odd day (s!) in pjs if staying in.

I hate the feel of most fabrics, but love my fleecy PJs. In the school holidays, we spend a few days decompressing and doing nothing that requires getting dressed and will quite happily stay in my PJs. It was different when we lived in London because even decompressing we could just pop to a local coffee shop or go to the cinema, so it felt like every day we had purpose to get dressed and go somewhere with little effort. It's very different when you live very rural and are adverse to bad weather.

People on here are really uptight. Like a timewarp 50s parenting!
I thought the current advice was wash hair fully every 2 to 4 days, shower every 2 or so days but daily face, pitts and bits before clean underwear and deodorant. Plus sunscreen.
Children before puberty don't need to bath every day and it is not good for their skin. By 10 daily showers or baths up to maybe 18ish when puberty settles down to normal levels.

TheChosenTwo · 02/01/2024 21:45

I don’t wear or even own pjs, I sleep naked. Always have a pair of joggers and a sweatshirt next to the bed to pull on in the morning but even those I wouldn’t wear all day.
So essentially I’m someone who gets dressed even if not going out, although I very rarely have a day where I don’t leave the house, I get jittery and need fresh air.

2chocolateoranges · 02/01/2024 21:47

Everyone is different and both are acceptable.

today I’ve sat about in my pjs, I had a shower , washed hair and put clean pjs on. I don’t feel the need to put clothes on if I’m not going out, seems a waste of clothes.

Dh always gets dressed as does my mum but each to their own. Neither adult child has gotten dressed today ,they both did the same as me and got showered and changed into clean pjs!

Saying they don't need to wash everyday is 1 thing, my 2 yr old went through a hating the bath stage after a UTI meant she got sore in a bath. So now she stands in an empty tub or on a towelling bathmat by the tub and I flannel wash her, put on clean nappy and PJs at bedtime. I wouldn't just be going, ah she doesn't need washed tonight I'll just chuck her in bed in her clothes and the same the next night.

Absolute bare minimum hand and face wash and teeth brushed and into pyjamas

Surely that's very basic?

PillowRest · 02/01/2024 21:51

We're in the middle. Adults and older children always dressed unless unwell, under about 7 they can have an occasional day in fluffy pjs in winter if we are staying home.

MadamVastra · 02/01/2024 21:52

This thread comes up as often as bed sheets and towels 🥱

and whoever said they don't know anyone who doesn't stay in their pjs all day? You do 😉

ClareBlue · 02/01/2024 21:52

If you have male goats you definitely need outside clothes and inside clothes and different outside clothes to go out other than the goat shed

I also remain unconvinced many people need to wear new pyjamas every day but then I'll wear even long sleeved tops for a couple of days if I've just been working from home so I'm clearly a slattern.

CrushingOnRubies · 02/01/2024 21:54

I used to wear jeans all day until getting home when I would out trackies on. Then lockdown happened. I now where pjs in bed then change into trackies if I'm not leaving the house for a while

existentialpain · 02/01/2024 21:55

I like a clear distinction between daytime and going to bed at night. So i never wear night clothes in the day and i make my bed each morning. The only exception is if I'm really ill. I find it's better for my mental health to get up and get dressed even if its a relatively quiet day.

I don't need fresh pyjamas every day, but then I'm not wearing them all day. I think if you're wearing them for 24 hrs straight, they need changing more frequently.

I would also wear a top twice if it didn't smell/wasn't dirty (although the second wear would be round the house, not to work or anything!). I don't sleep in my clothes though.

NerrSnerr · 02/01/2024 21:56

I usually put joggers and a hoodie on. My children usually only sleep in pants (even in winter), on an odd day we don't go anywhere my daughter will put a onesie on but my son tends to stay in pants (age 6). I do make him put clean pants on though. If he needs to put clothes on to go out as soon as he's home he's stripped off again.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/01/2024 21:56

I’ve had a pj day today - we’re still in a public holiday in Scotland. I sleep in a nightshirt, then put on joggers and a jumper which were yesterday’s loungewear when I got up. Had a bath, washed hair, then put on different joggers and a sweatshirt. Not been out other than into the garden with that cat, it’s been delightful.

NancyJoan · 02/01/2024 21:56

Nope, all dressed every day here. I hate the illness-feeling of being in pyjamas for hanging around. I could never put PJs on after work then cook and eat dinner. It just feels wrong.

BIossomtoes · 02/01/2024 21:58

I have to be ill to spend all day in pyjamas. No way would I do it otherwise.

Horriblewoman · 02/01/2024 22:00

Sitting around in pjs all day is incredibly slovenly and honestly one of the things I can’t get my head around.

Even in the pandemic I got up and showered and dressed every morning working from home. I was secretly judging friends that were like lol working from my bed all day.

I think this might be the thing I’m most judgmental about!

Boomboom22 · 02/01/2024 22:02

I put a dressing gown over the top and change into joggers if I'm not wearing comfy work trousers, which most of mine are now.

I did try for one full day in the holidays but didn't make it, always needed to pop out so had to get dressed, or at least shop dressed which tbf is better than work dressed.

I love dressing gowns, I have 6.

Calliopespa · 02/01/2024 21:29

I wouldn’t like doing this myself but negligent is a bit OTT.

@Calliopespa it’s negligent. It may not be up there with beating and starving your kids, but it would certainly be noted by social services. You can’t leave your kids in the same clothing for several days, day and night. That’s why I think (hope) it’s a joke.

DonnaBanana · 02/01/2024 22:04

I wear my PJs to casual things like nipping down the Spar shop or dropping the kids off at school so it would not bother me. That said, I do always get dressed once I am back in the morning.

Humbugg · 02/01/2024 22:04

Would wear joggers and hoodie type clothes if not leaving the house. Don’t think I’ve stayed in pjs all day unless ill or in the first week after having a a baby

BreadInCaptivity · 02/01/2024 22:04

Personally I think it's up to you how you dress in your own home.

If you are comfortable in your (presumably clean) pj's then what business is it of anyone else's?

I prefer to be showered and dressed when I get up regardless of if I'm leaving the house or not. Maybe a legacy of having the children's friends pop round unannounced 😂. But essentially if I'm getting a shower anyway then putting on clothes rather than pj's isn't extra effort.

If we are having a lazy day I might wear clothes not that dissimilar to pj's though, such as loose yoga pants/jogging bottoms and a comfy jumper/top.

I confess though I can't understand wanting to lounge around in nightclothes you wore to bed nor the idea of going to the shops in your nightwear but essentially it's personal choice and I can't see it's hurting anyone (apart from maybe premature arthritic hands from pearl clutchers).

Sorry! Meant to quote someone else

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 02/01/2024 22:06

Can't remember the last time l sat in pj's all day - reckon 40 odd years when l was a child off school sick. Makes me feel awful - lazy and dirty. Don't get me staryed on people that don't get dressed to go to the shops!

Riverlee · 02/01/2024 22:06

We get dressed every day, and put on joggers if lounging at home. The only time I wear pjs all day is when I’m ill.
