Insisting on getting dressed every day in school holidays

Hello
I am curious about what the consensus is on this. I am happy to sit in pjs all day if im
not going anywhere and so am happy for dc to also do this. But I’m aware my ex and his family get dressed every single day without fail, regardless of whether they are going out or not. We are always clean and showered etc. just not dressed for the outside world.

so yabu-people should get dressed every day, regardless of activity
Or yanbu -you agree with me and are happy to spend the odd day (s!) in pjs if staying in.

There isn't a day i don't go out at least twice a day, but i also dont own PJ's

Are you also one of those people who “never farts”?

ManateeFair · 03/01/2024 11:46

Do whatever you like in your own home. What’s anyone else’s opinion got to with it?! Just because some random on Mumsnet squeals that they think wearing pyjamas is ‘grim’ or something, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them.

Me, I’d get dressed. Purely personal preference. I might change into pyjamas in the evening, after I’ve eaten, so I can curl up in comfort to read or watch telly or whatever. But if you love a pyjama day, have a pyjama day! It’s nobody else’s business.

Haggisfish3 · 03/01/2024 11:48

I’m just interested in the general consensus. It’s interesting that the poll still shows a roughly 50/50 split despite the many nay sayers so vocal on the thread.

I stay indoors all day sometimes, yes. I love my home and the kids do, too!

We have been out twice in the last three weeks, I love being at home, it's where I keep my stuff! Why would I leave. I'm super organised so never run out of anything so what's to leave for? I dog sit as a hobby and have been out twice when having the dog for full days. On the two hour days she uses the garden for a wee,

Maybe many are like me no option to vote on my phone

God that's grim and unhealthy let alone the poor dog I'd expect a dog sitter to walk the dog isn't that what you're paid for? Hope you've pooh picked the lawn each day

Why do you go out? I just don't have the need

Fitandfree · 03/01/2024 11:53

I was brought up to get up, have breakfast, and get ready - I still do this in my fifties, unless very unwell (can't remember last time). My partner doesn't own pj's and he has a lovely dressing gown, packaging never opened, which has sat in his wardrobe for 20 years. My 13yo LOVES a pj day, and loves onsies and hoodies, on weekends and holidays. As long as he showers, and changes them for bed, I put up with it, reluctantly.

CurlewKate · 03/01/2024 11:54

Richard Cole and his husband had house clothes they called "scampers".

i definitely fart 😂

i wear giant mens tshirts in bed, not something you'd wander around in the day time wearing. But like i said, im out at least twice a day every day without fail. even as a child. (i have always had horses)

My dc are older-we tended to go out most days when they were younger. Today an odd glowing orb in the sky has made a reappearance so I will force us all into clothes to leave our womb like home. 🤣

Sorry @Haggisfish3 what is this glowing orb you speak of..?

Haggisfish3 · 03/01/2024 12:09

The sun definitely shine through one window for ten minutes today. 🤣🤣

This.

Also I think different people have different levels of need for rest. I need a lot of downtime and relaxation (not least because I am a busy single parent with no support). Other people thrive on being busy all the time.

I hate the idea that it is lazy to want a down day here and there. For some people it's more important to do this than not. If I don't have a down day I start to get MH issues, anxiety and so on.

toddlermam · 03/01/2024 12:22

It's just personal preference, no one is wrong? Me personally, I get changed into loungewear so a tracksuit or casual jumpsuit type thing. So not dressed dressed, but I like to change out of my pjs. Feels more 'fresh' Smile

Tessasanderson · 03/01/2024 12:28

My parents would never allow us to not get washed and dressed every single day without fail. I honestly cannot remember a single day in my life i have seen my parents spend the day in the PJ's. Same for me.

I set the same example to my own children. Breakfast in my Pj's but after that im dressed and ready for the day.

Each to their own but children take after their parents and sitting around all day in PJ's isnt what i want from my children.

You make it sound as though leaving the house is weird! It's not, it's a normal part of everyday life that, for most people, contributes to their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Here are some non-essential reasons why an adult might leave the house:

  • seeing friends
  • pursuing hobbies
  • other leisure activities (cinema, restaurants, exhibitions etc)
  • looking after / exercising animals (which as a dog sitter should be high on your list)
  • walking/cycling/other exercise
  • general errands
  • simply getting fresh air and clearing your head

Sitting at home day in day out unless you are forced out isn't something to be proud of IMO. Particularly if you look after dogs.

Most people do a balance, surely? Busy and active some days, relaxing at home on others (e.g. if the weather is bad). I don't think spending the odd day at home, dressed in comfy loungewear or whatever you want, is weird or wrong. But I do think that not leaving the house for weeks on end is unhealthy.

Indiev · 03/01/2024 12:49

I’m a single mother with an 8 year old son. We have both been off work/school for two week. We had a mixture…going out, seeing family and friends and going for walks. Some days we stayed in our pjs all day (we got showered) and lazed around.

im the most happiest in my old, oversized pjs what don’t match!

LenaLamont · 03/01/2024 13:06

Pj days when poorly, slobbing about days (like today) are leggings or joggers and a top.

I on the sofa under a warm throw Reading a book today, in clothes I would NOT wear out in public, but they are comfortable and I am enjoying a quiet day.

hopeishere · 03/01/2024 13:07

I get dressed every day. I don't even like pottering about in my pjs. Same with DH. Kids can go either way. DS2 has SN so we try to lake him get dressed as opposed to wandering about in his pants!!

Crunchymum · 03/01/2024 13:16

I have 3 DC, all primary age, and in term time they are out of the house 8.30am - 6pm x4 days a week (the 5th day they are out 8.30am - 4pm) and up early every Saturday for swimming. We are a busy household but when the weather is crap and we have no plans I am happy to let them have a "PJ day". They may get as "dressed" as leggings / trackies and a t-shirt but that's it.

When the weather is shit I see no point in getting dressed and going out for the sake of it. My kids need and even enjoy the odd lazy day. I'd say it's probably 2 Sunday's a month in winter we have no plans so not excessive, although we did have 3 lazy days indoors last week as the weather was awful / we had no plans and we were all shattered.

I am much more productive on days we are up and dressed and ready early. However I am on my own with then kids and sometimes I need to slow down too. I very rarely stay in PJ's but wouldn't walk the streets in the loungewear I put on.

Verv · 03/01/2024 13:26

I dont sleep in PJ's or really wear them, but I wear joggers and a hoodie or a t shirt round the house so if im home all day excluding taking the dog out for a walk then thats what I wear. I suppose they're the PJ equivalent.
Bra on whenever im not in bed though.

I cant see much mileage in wearing jeans around the house etc when im not going to be seen by anyone.

I agree with you on that. I was kind of responding to those who said it was lazy not to leave the house at least once a day every day - and there have been a few of them on this thread.
