I’m very very ready for my young adult children to go home now ?

Case for the prosecution:

  1. LUNCH. My GOD JUST HAVE A SANDWICH. Why can’t young people eat lunch food? Not pasta or bagels or cooked this or that
  2. Inability to take the bins out
  3. work calls that take up a whole room
  4. GLASSES everywhere
I love them obviously. But they can go home now.

(They are any day )

I do love a good well-stuffed sandwich/bap/panini for lunch, usually of things I've pre-cooked (good quality plump pork sausages, bacon, fried or poached/boiled eggs, chicken, fish fillets/jumbo fish fillets) or bought-in snack foods (hot smoked salmon or trout or mackerel) garnished with sliced tomatoes or gherkins- yum 😋 with a coffee/tea or ginger beer. 🌹

Just got back from a lovely lunch out with a friend and he’s cooking fucking steak for God sake

Yabu about the sandwiches. Sandwiches are boring and not really very nutritious. You want something nice and warm in winter!

greensleevez · 03/01/2024 14:53

To be fair to my kids they had fish finger sandwiches for lunch today whereas I cooked (just for) myself a delicious pasta dish from scratch! 😉

Goldypants · 03/01/2024 14:54

Everyone is kind of tidied up but not properly and I’m just absolutely furious now

You reckon this is just special winter behaviour?🤣🤣🤣

BULLSEYE, OP !!

Young people and lunch…. Nooooooo!!

They should have to get in a Time Machine and experience tomato soup (Heinz, not fresh roasted blush tomato and basil) and a tin of potato/vegetable salad and hard-boiled egg.

Every day there’s the refrain, “There’s nothing to eeeeeeaaat,” whilst staring mournfully at the middle row of the fridge (rummaging or bending not a possibility). I always cook a proper dinner. Lunch is “any old thing” and here is not a branch of Pret A Manger.

“How do people have time to prepare, eat and clear up elaborate meals in the middle of the day? Don't they have other things to do? Not to mention all the shopping. And the cost.”

THIS!! Can anyone shed any light?!

I mean, I like a sandwich but I don't find them particularly filling. I'll be hungry again mid-afternoon if nothing else.

So I cook when I'm WFH/at weekends. Lots of things don't take long/much effort to cook and I can stand my laptop in the kitchen and work while keeping an eye on something frying, or carry on while something bakes. Or I'll have left-overs from last night and cook again in the evening.

I like nice food and I like cooking so it's no chore. It's also not expensive if you meal-plan. However, I have to clear up after myself as there's no-one else to do it for me!

Heinz tinned salads!!! Do they still exist? Although I suspect my memory is making them far more delicious that they really were…

WellImNotFuckingCooking · 03/01/2024 16:04

I do suspect there are lots of MN OGsGrin here as I remember posting about my toddlers hair and she's just fucked off back to uni!

My favourite is we have a family Snapchat group chat inc the DCs that live away from home. They were all home this Christmas YET THEY ALL KEPT TEXTING ON THE GROUP CHAT. She's in bed in the next room you nugget, just go and bloody ask her if she wants to join you in ordering Dominoes as they have a special meal deal Hmm The notifications kept waking me up by pinging on my Alexa at 9pm 1am...

Goldypants · 03/01/2024 16:08

Would it be unreasonable to impose a cold lunch only policy next holiday?

OP posts:
WellImNotFuckingCooking · 03/01/2024 16:09

And YY to the special sauces, all my DCs stockings sounded like they were full of glass vodka miniatures yet it was all bottles of exotic sauces..how things change!

They are fabulous though. I have lots of cups of tea made for me (I have a special mug, and glass, cutlery etc which no one else is allowed to use) so I'll miss that especially Grin

MEALPREP in advance!
otherwise maybe some have long lunch (1h)?

I always meal prep, unless it’s pasta, that’s 15-20mins tops.

I have some recipes for some nice cold noodle salads! Only about a dozen ingredients each requiring lots of kniives and chopping boards, so don't worry Wink

OP thinking about it… have you heard of malicious compliance..? You don’t want any of that 😂🫣

imagine like someone else said cold pasta salads/noodle salads, other salads with dozens of ingredients and chopping and pots and plates 😂

Goldypants · 03/01/2024 16:22

Oh god.

Although as I type this, I’m about to put into little foil cartons about 2 kg of beef stew to make into a nice pie for him to takeaway to put in his freezer so, who is the idiot here?

😁

@WellImNotFuckingCooking
MN OG here. They were at primary school when I joined in 2006. Elder offspring was 28 last week.
No fancy diets although one is vegetarian. Just an inability to construct a meal from a full fridge.

heartofglass23 · 03/01/2024 16:42

It's multiculturalism.

Sandwiches are a very British food (named after the Earl of Sandwich).

Most other cultures have a main meal at lunchtime. This would involve cooked meat, vegetables and a cooked carb like rice or pasta.

So British student brought up on sandwiches in their packed lunches go to uni and flat share with students from all over the world and the peer influence kicks in and they develop the 'main meal at lunchtime' habit.

Goldypants · 03/01/2024 16:42

Why can't they just do conference calls in their bedrooms?

IamRoyFuckingKent · 03/01/2024 17:13

I could have started this thread. Irritations:

They are up half the night, sometimes until 3am, talking
They smoke weed in the garden
My charger is never where I left it
Ditto hairbrushes, make up wipes
Can I have a lift to Tesco or somewhere?
Friends are coming over to watch the football now
the WASHING! Never Fucking Ending!
The dishwasher, on several times a day
Takeover of the living room, irritation if we want to use it, imagine, in our own house, the cheek of us!

Really want them gone now, it's 2 days away. I love them but I don't want to live with them any more.

I may have suggested that, several times, but got the eye roll. Something to do with the background apparently.
Anyway, its much nicer to work in the kitchen next to all the free food in the fridge.

loml97 · 03/01/2024 17:30

Goldypants thank you so much for this thread, it's given me a lovely feeling of connection realising my house is like so many others. Had 3 adult children home for 10 days plus two partners. They are all great young people and I'm so proud of them but yes to: using every pan and flicking food all over the hob/ counter etc . They actually think they've cleaned up when my kitchen looks in need of a deep clean. Glasses everywhere: bedrooms, bathrooms, mantelpiece, floor. Making a cooked breakfast at 11 am when I'm thinking about prepping lunch. Towels on bathroom floor, huge puddles on bathroom floor. They are not in anyway rude or ungrateful, completely the opposite, as a pp said people actually pay them to have opinions and drive businesses, but a good wipe down of the kitchen apparently is a skill that takes longer to learn!
