I’m very very ready for my young adult children to go home now ?

Case for the prosecution:

  1. LUNCH. My GOD JUST HAVE A SANDWICH. Why can’t young people eat lunch food? Not pasta or bagels or cooked this or that
  2. Inability to take the bins out
  3. work calls that take up a whole room
  4. GLASSES everywhere
I love them obviously. But they can go home now.

(They are any day )

To be fair I’m 43 and I don’t like sandwiches for lunch, I’ll usually do some sort of jacket potato or pasta thing. But I relate to the rest. Dd is 20 and here home from university and I love her to bits but omg I miss having my own space. I’m sure she feels the same…! She’s here for another 2 weeks.

Aww my ds is 20 and going back today - wish I had another 2 weeks with him! Get the food issue though!

Heyhoherewegoagain · 03/01/2024 09:59

I’ve not seen it on the thread so apologies if I’ve missed it but has anyone had the audacity to suggest that the adult offspring eat the same main meal 2 days in a row??

My (protein and gym obsessed 🙄) has 2 main meals every evening, and if I suggest 2 portions of the same meal you’d think I ask them to go dig up worms!

(no I don’t humour it as such, I deal with it by batch cooking and pointing them in the direction of the freezer)

And god forbid I do a simple dinner of jacket potato with salmon and vegetables.

I offered dd2 and her dh bacon butties for lunch last Sunday ( dd1 and her dh were coming the next day and as he's Muslim we couldn't have it then) and dd2 was anxiously reassuring her dh that it was okay as it was only once in that month!

I love sandwiches, who doesn't love sandwiches!

Loving this. Mine are teens and still live here ( although I have frequently considered moving out lately..) and you see the problem in this house is there is NO FOOD!! Even after I had spent £140 before Xmas, there were only things that has to be cooked, and not enough beige crap to put in the oven at 11 pm.. apparently bread, cheese, cold meats, pickles, pate, tortilla, houmous, olives, salad, fruit, eggs...are NOT FOOD.
So I'm partly envious that your young adult offspring will do things with ingredients, and partly empathising with the endless mess and disruption.
Also, we are down to 3 table knives. 3. They are not disposable!!!

NewnamefirNewYear · 03/01/2024 12:12

I took dd to the station last night and was quite sad to see her go after nearly a fortnight. Her father and I love her dearly and were really pleased that she wanted to come home for Christmas and New Year but there were moments during her visit when I was sorely tempted to run away ! This is a great thread as I am reassured that I am not alone.

She didnt get up early enough to want lunch but there was much encouragement of us to be more adventurous in our eating and offers to cook for us. Fortunately no ramen though !

Cheese on toast is amazing, I shan't deny it! But I would pick a cucumber & tuna mayo or a BLT first!! 😋

Imnotadentist · 03/01/2024 12:40

I deal with the cheese grater by not actually washing it, unless it’s obvious the cat has given it a lick. (Obviously I will stick it in the dishwasher from time to time but not every effing time it’s been used).
It was there again on the work top this morning. I’m not sure how noodles and crumpets even required grated cheese. I guess I’ve just not moved with the times.

I’m confused and before I pop off about how inconsiderate and disrespectful that is…
I just wanted to make sure..
Your S(on)IL is Muslim and your choice of lunch to offer him is a BACON butty??
WTAF??

Of course not! My son in law who is Muslim was coming the next day with dd1. Dd2's dh is not Muslim but is very into healthy eating!

Yes mine never seem to have a cold lunch such as a sandwich, unless it's sushi!

It's always something like noodles with eggs, ie the sort of thing you get in Wagamama (miso, ramen, kimchi)!

Drives me nuts!

But… why?

honest no snark. I really am trying to under this thread.. why does it drive you mad that they eat
a. Something warm
b. They cook it
c. They eat differently than you? 🤔🤔🤔 (I take it the issue is with a and b rather than this, but you never know).

Omg sorry! 😂
it did seem weird, but on mnet you never know 🫣🫣🫣
I thought by DH you meant daughter’s DH! (Didn’t see DD1-2)
sorry again!

edited for spelling

I did, in fact apologise and don’t need prompting.
It was 100% my comprehension mistake as didn’t notice dd 1-2 distinction and OP clarified as well.

ICantGetNoSheep · 03/01/2024 13:21

Genuine question and not being obtuse, but to those of you whose children just leave kitchen debris everywhere (the confetti cheese made me laugh!) do you pull them up on it? Or is it not worth the hassle?!

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 03/01/2024 13:30

I have to confess that the mature student theory may be right 🫣just made my own lunch (and I promise I’m a proper grown up with grown up children!) toasted bloomer with avocado mashed with lime juice, a poached egg, and then sriracha on top.. I will do kitchen cleanup though.

Only in a joky way. My mid 20s DC don't live at home and having their company for a few days at Christmas is such a pleasure that I don't really mind the mess. They aren't messy in their own homes and readily admit they regress to teenagers at home.

toastedcrumpetsrock · 03/01/2024 13:36

Waves in solidarity 👋 every meal is elaborate- even a toasty has to have 7 fillings and be on artisan bread, they seem to need 4 meals every day - the last one being around midnight ensuring cheese confetti greets me each morning along with a plug hole full of pasta or ramen. It's costing me an absolute fortune.
I've declared a fork and glass amnesty today and I'm so fed up of them using every towel I own, they must need a separate one for each limb.

Goatymum · 03/01/2024 13:39

I don’t want to be smug or anything 😆 but just dropped DCs at the station to go back to uni (one is going to the other’s before going back to their uni), the cleaner had just finished and I’m now chilling having finished work for the day!!
DD even bought down her store of crockery - 3 dinner plates, a bowl and 2 glasses.
Before they left I did make ds a sandwich after this convo:
Me: ‘you not eating lunch before you go?’
him: ‘nah, I’ll get something on the way’
Me: ‘Want some toast?’ (I was making my lunch anyway, dd was chomping on pasta)
him: ‘yes please!!!’
Ended up w cheese & marmite toasted sandwich w cucumber, followed by homemade muffin so he really just cba to make it himself (and will prob get food en route too).

GellerYeller · 03/01/2024 13:39

To the PP who mentioned the soup maker/blender, I am with you. A machine so heavy it’s impossible to lift/rinse when full, and can’t go in the dishwasher because of the heating element.
It’s in constant use for soups and smoothies. Which always seem to be orange and purple respectively and stain the surfaces/sink/Tupperware. I’m constantly scrubbing or soaking pulp off the damn thing!
Don’t get me started on Sistema/Tupperware either 😂

Newestname002 · 03/01/2024 13:42

@ThinkingAgainAndAgain

I'm with your mum. No one would have been having bloody sushi!

Agree with this PP. Or he could have had his sushi if he paid for it there and then or accepted his allowance would be reduced by £10.75... 🌹

FrenchandSaunders · 03/01/2024 13:45

This is funny!

I've just realised having read this that mine don't make sandwiches either ... they'll buy one in M&S or subway but wouldn't think of making one at home.

Lunches are chicken salad, greek salad, omelettes .... what happened to a tin of ravioli!

And don't mention the empty wine fridge/rack ....
