To think Sadiq Khan is a hypocrite?

He's been banging on about climate change and the environment all year and introduced the ULEZ scheme which he claims will clean up London's air (while also causing financial hardship to those who can least afford it in a cost of living crisis). Then he spends millions on a fireworks display sending pollutants into the skies above London??

No one then!?

Nope, he would have been absolutely hammered had he, the mayor of one of the major capital cities in the world, not put on such a display. That display will have barely moved the needle on the amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

According to an FOI request the claimed emissions from the display was around 300 kg, which it is also claimed in the FOI has been offset by tree planting.

A coal fired power station in china will produce more than that in minutes of operation.

Oh they're all out today. Do we think Rishi is the best thing ever? Have you heard his fabby new year speech? And isn't Keir Starmer AWFUL? Did you know he had a 🍺? Pleb. And so on. I like Sadiq Khan and hope he is re-elected. Have you seen the opposition? No wonder all the Tories have is insults when they've such a poor candidate.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/01/2024 12:31

He’s a puppet.

IClaudine · 01/01/2024 12:32

I don't think fifteen minutes of fireworks makes much difference. There were lots of people there enjoying it.

He’s a puppet.

For who?

Boomer55 · 01/01/2024 12:33

Yes, he is a hypocrite. Hopefully, he will be voted out in May.

I think we are officially now on the run up to a May GE as well as local and mayoral elections. There will be tons of this sort of guff. Makes no odds, Tories are toast and Khan will win again.

Reugny · 01/01/2024 12:35

And you think Susan Hall would do any better?

Can you explain why the Tories have chosen an extremely poor candidate yet again?

If the Tories wanted to give Londoners a proper choice they would have chosen someone who wasn't a completely mad racist liar.

Given the appalling Tory candidate, I hope he isn't.

Doubt it. The Tory candidate is woeful.

BobnLen · 01/01/2024 12:37

It's one of those showy things that has to be done like the Coronation and stuff like that, it's expected. Nothing else really matters when it is for show.

VisiblyNot25 · 01/01/2024 12:39

This is such a scientifically illiterate post. There is no comparison at all. The amount of emissions from those firework displays is tiny in relative terms and assessing environmental impact is part of the procurement process. If this is the best people can do to attack Sadiq Khan he is going to walk the elections.

AzureBlue99 · 01/01/2024 12:40

His real lack is not getting to grip with crime. His office runs the Met Police. A 16 year old boy was stabbed to death watching the fireworks at a viewing area in Primrose Hill. Start the year as you mean to go on, stabbings and murder.

Alcyoneus · 01/01/2024 12:43

Every major city in the world has fireworks displays. It attracts tourists and interest.

Sadiq Khan is thick and incompetent. Perhaps judging by his recent free upgrades on an American airline, dodgy too.

But if firework is what you’re going to call him out on, you don’t follow current events closely enough. Call him out on his record on crime, eating billions and mismanaging TFL, making London a shithole.

His office doesn't run the Met Police.

He has much power over the Met police as the police and crime commissioner for say Sussex https://www.sussex-pcc.gov.uk/ has over Sussex police.

The Home Secretary actually is the only politician who power over all police forces in England.

flapjackfairy · 01/01/2024 12:45

personally I object to the millions of pounds spent each year on these massive firework displays. The money could be much better spent IMHO.

topnoddy · 01/01/2024 12:47

Of course he is , he's a politician isn't he

All lying , cheating , lying liars the lot of em .

Only in it for themselves

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis reports to the Mayor of London and the Home Office. So Cleverly must take the blame too.

Eleganz · 01/01/2024 12:49

Violent crime had been rising across the country since 2010. Possibly a drop this year just gone. Something happened then on a national level, it wasn't Khan being elected mayor of London btw.

Well Khan has never been fined for breaking the law, has he?

If fireworks is the hill you are going to die on when trying to hold politicians to account, you have no imagination.

Nor have most law breakers currently turning London into a shit hole. Ironic.
