To think Sadiq Khan is a hypocrite?

He's been banging on about climate change and the environment all year and introduced the ULEZ scheme which he claims will clean up London's air (while also causing financial hardship to those who can least afford it in a cost of living crisis). Then he spends millions on a fireworks display sending pollutants into the skies above London??

Between 2010 and 2023 the population of London has grown by over a million. The numbers of Met police has not grown with that. In fact 2021 was the only year where there were more Met police than in 2010.

And yet, for five of those years, Khan wasn't in charge and crime rates didn't spiral as much.

Also, as Khan sets the budget for the Met Police (https://www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/about-us/about-the-met/police-and-crime-plan/) this is literally all down to him.

A bit less money on his fancy fleet of range rovers (cos let's be honest, who's gonna try and assassinate him) and a bit less money on fireworks and his other various pet projects (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/10/28/sadiq-khan-spent-24k-advertising-funding-free-school-meals/) and a bit more money for the Met is entirely within his gift.

Sadiq Khan spent £24,000 on posters promoting free school meals policy

The cost of the posters was equivalent to more than 9,000 lunches

I think it was a bit unnecessary when there is a CoL crisis and the country is in tatters. Although the tax revenue created by the NYE tourism to London probably paid for most of it.

If fireworks is the hill you are going to die on when trying to hold politicians to account, you have no imagination.

I never said it was a hill.to.die on but it is yet another example of money wasted on useless things . IMO obviously. Other opinions are available !

therealcookiemonster · 01/01/2024 13:37

hi there Susan. have you lost your purse again?

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/01/2024 13:38

"15 minutes of fireworks is the same as illegal levels of air pollution from private vehicles. I am very clever."

Yeah OP you really aren't very bright are you?

TheScenicWay · 01/01/2024 13:39

If he said he's cleaning up London and spending those millions on tackling knife crime and homelessness instead of the fireworks, then id think that is money well spent.
But as it stands, he's a hypocrite.

His real lack is not getting to grip with crime. His office runs the Met Police. A 16 year old boy was stabbed to death watching the fireworks at a viewing area in Primrose Hill. Start the year as you mean to go on, stabbings and murder.

I don't think it is as simple as you think to turn around such a difficult problem. People rightly complain about the amount of stop and search the police carry out, particularly on black men. He got rid of Cressida Dick who was worse than useless and it takes time to deal with such a problem, it takes years and I blame theTory government for austerity measures that have crippled youth services, the police and council funding. You can't ban knives as every home has them and many teenagers carry now so measures to work with the youth are needed and that takes money.

I think Khan has done a great job with pollution levels. ULEZ proved to have reduced them considerably and as someone with asthma I have noticed the difference. I think he is a very good mayor and I will be voting for him.

The fireworks benefit the whole country and is nothing compared to industry and other sources of pollution.

A bit less money on his fancy fleet of range rovers (cos let's be honest, who's gonna try and assassinate him)

This fancy fleet of range rovers?

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/scotland-yard-set-to-spend-ps1-6m-on-range-rover-vogues-to-respond-to-terror-attacks-a3525166.html

As to who might assassinate him, well have you not heard of Jo Cox and David Amess? No one expected them to be assassinate either. It is not beyond the reals of possibility, especially given the rightvwing nut jobs that are out there.

Scotland Yard set to buy fleet of Range Rover Vogues to fight terror

Scotland Yard is set to splash up to £1.6million on a new fleet of elite SUVs to beef-up protection of Royals, government ministers and high profile figures from terror attacks.

Nope, he would have been absolutely hammered had he, the mayor of one of the major capital cities in the world, not put on such a display. That display will have barely moved the needle on the amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

This! If he had cancelled the display, he would have been thrown to the dogs and written off as a JSO zealot propped up by the loony left! I, personally think Sadiq Khan isn't a bad candidate and is doing his best after having his hands tied behind his back by central government.

Christmasisover · 01/01/2024 13:50

IClaudine · 01/01/2024 12:32

I don't think fifteen minutes of fireworks makes much difference. There were lots of people there enjoying it.

It will have likely brought in revenue to the capital as a lot of people come specifically for the fireworks and stay over.

Boomboom22 · 01/01/2024 13:50

Why is Susan Hall woeful?
Seems she did a very good job of bringing a council back from large debt whilst freezing council tax and has an actual track record of reducing crime in areas she is responsible for?
GC comment was rude but true, she also has a point about Jewish views about safety.

Khan 'mate' whilst shouting over women I thought was generally considered to be a bit shit as well as misogynistic.

I know nothing about the lib dem candidate but assuming she's got no chance?

pointythings · 01/01/2024 13:52

Ulez has been shown to have improved air quality in London substantially even before its expansion, so maybe think about that? The financial compensation scheme needs radical improvement, but Ulez itself isn't a problem - it's a solution.

Agree that the anti Labour threads are getting ridiculous on here - and pathetic.

Boomer55 · 01/01/2024 12:33

Yes, he is a hypocrite. Hopefully, he will be voted out in May.

He'll get voted back in alright. Panders to the crowd that thinks London was invented in 1948.

Exasperatednow · 01/01/2024 13:57

Susan Hall who made up a story about being pick pocketed on the tube when in reality she list her purse and some kind person handed it in. I'm always a bit sceptical about politicians who lie for political gain.

We spotted a hole in Tory mayor candidate Susan Hall's pickpocket story

Pickpocket or small pocket?

Or perhaps the pickpocket didn't realise who they nicked from so handed it in with a story?

That money wouldn't make a dent on those issues whatsoever. Those issues have been brewing for years and years. Look at the London riots from a fair few years ago, the disdain for the establishment, the lack of capacity in prisons, the failing justice system and lots more that has all contributed to the lawless Britain we live in! I don't want to hear that it's a result of immigration either as even if we had more immigration, appropriate punishment, surveillance etc would be enough of a deterrent to deal with any additional criminality that came with an increase in population. The government has looked after its own for far too long meanwhile squeezing the budgets for local councils and public services with one hand and adding greater responsibilities with the other. We are heading towards privatisation of everything possible.

EasternStandard · 01/01/2024 14:08

Leave the fireworks. I don’t want to be one one major city that puts up a not here sign in the round up. It’s a crowd puller and people spend

Other criticisms fine

personally I object to the millions of pounds spent each year on these massive firework displays. The money could be much better spent IMHO.

You do know people pay to see them?

BlackberrySky · 01/01/2024 14:20

Oh yawn, ULEZ haters really do veil their bleating under the thinnest of cloaks. Did you need to get a different car, OP? I did, and I much prefer my compliant one.
