To think Sadiq Khan is a hypocrite?

He's been banging on about climate change and the environment all year and introduced the ULEZ scheme which he claims will clean up London's air (while also causing financial hardship to those who can least afford it in a cost of living crisis). Then he spends millions on a fireworks display sending pollutants into the skies above London??

Well Khan has never been fined for breaking the law, has he?

Doesn't alter the above

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/01/2024 12:53

He can’t really win though can he? If he hadn’t done a fireworks show on environmental grounds he would’ve been accused of being “woke” or “anti British” or some such nonsense.

I’m not necessarily Sadiq’s biggest fan but I think a lot of the flack he gets is bigoted and unfair.

Moonshine5 · 01/01/2024 12:53

Whataboutery at it's finest.
No I don't believe SK is.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/01/2024 12:55

The stench of Tory desperation grows ever more pungent.

Alcyoneus · 01/01/2024 12:50

Nor have most law breakers currently turning London into a shit hole. Ironic.

Do you have stats? Is the conviction rate worse or better than the rest of the UK?
Do you hold the Home Office and the Government responsible at all? Did Khan slash police numbers and alienate police forces? Was he the architect of austerity which has led to the UK being on its knees?

IClaudine · 01/01/2024 12:57

The Tories are fucked on a local and national level. Get used to it.

ACynicalDad · 01/01/2024 12:58

I’m more annoyed the first bit was self promotion. the climate impact will be tiny and as one of the top cities in the world it’s pretty vital we promote ourselves.

Same. I liked the fireworks and display, it was very well done. The self promotion and propaganda over talking was off though

Do other countries do that we have the NHS type sell?

Exasperatednow · 01/01/2024 13:00

He can't win can he? If he didn't do the people would complain and if he did they would complain.

When interviewed he comes across as credible. Much more so than Susan Hall who just isn't very bright and very prejudiced.

newnamethanks · 01/01/2024 13:00

Can't wait for Susan Hall to cure everything when running London😂I do hope she's recovered from the trauma of losing her purse on the tube having her purse stolen by robbers, probably illegal immigrants. I also hope she has thanked the person who found it where she'd dropped it and returned it, money and all else intact. Such honesty Susan; imagine what that's like. Good luck to anyone who puts their trust in her.

StaunchMomma · 01/01/2024 13:01

The ULEZ scheme was introduced by Boris, Khan is just Mayor while it came into fruition.

London has always had fireworks at NY and at least some of it was drones.

Think you're reaching, here.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2024 13:04

ULEZ applies to only a very small number of vehicles and any petrol car under about 15 years old is exempt. I'd like to see a charge on SUVs which are not needed at all and cannot be driven properly by most who have them.

Fireworks whilst I have no wish to see them have a charge to attend and travel is not free.

A good outcome in the next Mayoral election would be that whoever is elected needs multi-party support to get his or her budget through, via the London Assembly membership.

peakygold · 01/01/2024 13:06

ULEZ has absolutely nothing to do with reducing emissions. For £12 a day, I can drive my old banger absolutely anywhere for 24hrs, polluting the atmosphere and crushing the lungs of COPD-ridden pensioners. It's a money-making enterprise, and Khan is very good at creating them.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/01/2024 13:07

Why not look at why the ULEZ was expanded? It was a specific condition set by the Government of additional funding as a result of the vast sums lost by TfL as a direct result of Government decisions regarding Covid lockdowns.

The Government wanted the expansion. The Government forced the expansion. The Government relied upon the stupidity of people to say it was Khan's choice/idea/fault rather than look at how this was forced through by the Government when it wasn't necessary to make it a condition of the additional funding.

He should focus less on climate change (his actions are going to have zero impact anyway except causing stress on people who can't afford low emission cars) and less on blowing his own damn trumpet and a bit more on trying to make London safer again.

London knife crime 2023 | Statista

Knife crime in London has increased significantly in recent years, reaching a peak in 2019/20, and remaining at high levels since then.

Do stop, @NeverDropYourMooncup , pointing out truths and spoiling all their fun. YES, ulez whingers, that's where it came from and how it came about. And you're supporting them, your government, the one you chose to get things done. They aren't fair to you, they know you'll suck up any old lie and repeat it ad infinitum. It would be funny but . . . Dear me.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 01/01/2024 13:18

AyrshireTryer · 01/01/2024 13:20

OP Are you Susan Hall?

MajesticWhine · 01/01/2024 13:25

Embarrassing that he takes credit by putting "mayor of london presents" up in lights. Taxpayers money pays for that so no credit to him. Pompous twat.

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/01/2024 13:25

@Alcyoneus

Nor have most law breakers currently turning London into a shit hole. Ironic.

What, worse than the former UK industrial towns outside London with endemic crime and unemployment? No crime or law breaking in the former mill towns or the former Welsh mining towns is there?

Its a fairly reliable rule that the people who feel comfortable calling London a “shithole” usually know nothing about London.

And btw Sadiq Khan is not responsible for the parlour economic condition of the UK.

That isn't actually true. What the bail out said was: The immediate reintroduction of the London Congestion Charge, LEZ and ULEZ and urgently bring forward proposals to widen the scope and levels of these charges, in accordance with the relevant legal powers and decision-making processes.

The proposal for the expansion was already there prior to the bail out.

GreatGateauxsby · 01/01/2024 13:26

Forget the fireworks it’s his stupid fleet of range rovers that boils my piss.

his own personal vechile is exempt from ULEZ

😠😒

No but labour created a policy about something or other 14 years ago so it's all their fault!!!!

Between 2010 and 2023 the population of London has grown by over a million. The numbers of Met police has not grown with that. In fact 2021 was the only year where there were more Met police than in 2010.

According to an FOI request the claimed emissions from the display was around 300 kg, which it is also claimed in the FOI has been offset by tree planting.

What tree planting?

Can you show any evidence of tree planting?

All I see is building huge development with not even post stamp sized green spaces.

Tree offsetting my arse.
