What are ‘all the trimmings’?

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

Mash, croquettes, sometimes roasties, broccoli, stuffing, carrots/other veg, gravy, sometimes Yorkshire puddings.

FairisleFairy · 29/12/2023 16:58

Trimmings to me is the extra stuff like pigs in blankets, stuffing, cranberry sauce, bread sauce . Yorkshire puddings if you’re in that camp (I’m not!)

TheWillowTrees · 29/12/2023 16:59

Turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, gravy, cranberry sauce, bread sauce maybe, roast potatoes, at least 2 other veg but probably more.

mynameiscalypso · 29/12/2023 16:59

We had:
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing x 2
Roast potatoes
Roasted carrots and parsnips
Braised red cabbage
Sprouts with bacon
Leeks in cheese sauce
Gravy
Cranberry sauce

Oh interesting. I suspect this might cause an argument between us MNetters 😂

For me 'all the trimmings' means

  • every known veg known to man
  • roast potatoes and mash
  • Yorkshire puddings
  • gravy
  • stuffing
(Edit - forgot the sodding pigs in blanket)

I know, I know Yorkshire puddings shouldn't technically be with Turkey, but I dont care. 😁

Mash, croquettes, sometimes roasties, broccoli, stuffing, carrots/other veg, gravy, sometimes Yorkshire puddings.

I’d never have thought this included mash & croquettes!

Two different types of potatoes, stuffing, gravy, sprouts, cranberry and bread sauce. Basically I would have high expectations of trimmings 🤣. Some people don’t know how to do a proper Christmas dinner - what did you have?

littleteapot86 · 29/12/2023 17:01

we ordered a Gousto box and their trimmings for Christmas dinner were pigs in blankets, stuffing, parsnips, carrots, roast potatoes and brussels. I do like a Yorkshire pud though but they didn't have that.

Roasts are of no interest to me but i got it for the novelty factor and ate it on the 27th instead 😅

EDIT: also cranberry sauce and gravy.

Silverbirchtwo · 29/12/2023 17:01

Roast potatoes, new potatoes, Peas, Carrots, brussels, Chestnut stuffing, sage and onion stuffing (sometimes), cranberry sauce, bread sauce, gravy, maybe another veg or two.

Maddy70 · 29/12/2023 17:03

Mash. Roasters. Pigs in blankets. Stuffing. Cranberry sauce sprouts gravy

KinS24 · 29/12/2023 17:03

Cranberry sauce, bread sauce, two sorts of stuffing, pigs in blankets, spiced red cabbage, mashed swede and carrot, parsnips.
Everything a bit fancy and rich compared with a normal roast. Like honeyed parsnips and chestnuts with the sprouts.
What were you served?

We had
Turkey
Beef
Pork stuffing balls
Nut roast
Chestnut and mushroom bake
Veg stuffing
Pigs in Blankets
Yorkshires
Carrots
Roast potatoes
Sprouts
Red cabbage
Cauliflower cheese
Roast parsnips
Gravy (turkey, beef and veggie)
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce

Sunnydays0101 · 29/12/2023 17:03

I suppose it would be at least one type of stuffing, gravy, maybe cranberry or bread sauce. Roast potatoes and a selection of veg - roast parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts. Maybe potato gratin or cauliflower cheese. Roast turkey and baked ham. I think it would be quality of the food over quantity.

DarkDarkNight · 29/12/2023 17:03

A decent choice of veg - e.g. roasted carrots and parsnips, red cabbage, green cabbage, carrot and swede mash (I could do without broccoli or cauliflower cheese).

Roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, yorkshires, gravy.

sauces/condiments to go with whatever meat so cranberry, apple, horseradish.

Doyoumind · 29/12/2023 17:03

Stuffing, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes roast veg, sprouts in some form, other green veg, gravy, red cabbage, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, maybe some other veg like mash with celeriac.

AQuantityOfNaughtyCats · 29/12/2023 17:03

Roast pots, yorkshires, roast parsnips, cauli cheese, pigs in blankets, broccoli, carrots, sprouts, cranberry sauce, cabbage, stuffing
and gravy.

Maddy70 · 29/12/2023 17:03

And cauliflower cheese!!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 29/12/2023 17:03

Veg. I’d expect roast potatoes, roast parsnips and sprouts and then a mix of other veg but would expect this to vary depending on host. Personally I like carrots, roasted sweet potato, cabbage, green beans but others like broccoli, mashed potato or swede etc all acceptable. I’d expect one or two of the veg dishes to be jazzed up a bit, eg: cauliflower cheese, sprouts with pancetta.
Gravy
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings (although accept not everybody is happy to serve)
Cranberry Sauce
I know some serve more than one meat alongside the main one (eg: Turkey but also a gammon or beef joint) but I don’t think that’s necesssary.

HorMon · 29/12/2023 17:04

Trimmings to me is the extras over and above one meat (turkey). So pigs in blankets, stuffing. And "extra veg than usual, more than 1 type of potato. Plus cranberry sauce

KinS24 · 29/12/2023 17:04

And cauliflower cheese of course!

JenJenJenJenJenJen · 29/12/2023 17:04

My official definition-

Stuffing
At least two types of potato
At at least three different vegetables (excluding potatoes)
At least two sauces available (gravy counts- as does bread sauce, cranberry)

BarkHorse · 29/12/2023 17:04

Some of these are contentious but for us
parsnips, carrots sprouts, red cabbage, pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese, stuffing balls, gravy a selection of “pickles” and Yorkshire puds

TheWillowTrees · 29/12/2023 17:04

What did you get, OP?

DarkDarkNight · 29/12/2023 17:04

Forgot the sprouts and stuffing but I’m not a fan of either, we had them as a choice though.
