What are ‘all the trimmings’?

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 29/12/2023 16:56

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

Looks like we should do mash next year!

Oh god yes, do it!!!

@Iwanttowantto I am so glad I asked and will always be really clear now when hosting Xmas dinner, as I’d never have thought to serve mash or cauliflower cheese but apparently that is Christmas trimmings for some.

I wonder what is expected for pudding? We usually do Xmas pud with custard and/or cream and one other pud, usually a gateau.

For pudding we got a couple, Christmas pud and a caramel melt in the middle chocolate pudding and custard as I knew my 3 year old wouldn't appreciate all the boozy fruit cake stuff 😅

(The chocolate pudding was ace btw)

All four of my children have hated mash and gag on it 🤣

Oh, you didn’t put enough butter in! 🤣Happy New Year! 🌺

This is a hilarious and quite useful post. I'm horrified by all the mash! And general gluttony.

🙄

Sorry mash is vile, it doesn’t matter how much butter or milk you put in it.

BIossomtoes · 01/01/2024 09:24

Food of the gods, especially with cheese in it.

🙄

‘General gluttony’ - it is light hearted though, isn’t it? Today we are having our last ‘ gluttonous’ ( yes, I made that up) meal for some time.
This week we are looking forward to beans on toast, soup and rolls, boiled eggs etc

Hi ImCamembertTheBigCheese.
I was agreeing with your eye roll and my comment was aimed at the poster who did not like the ‘gluttony’ , not aimed at you 🌺 - I probably should not have quoted you. You are right! The gluttony comment deserved a very big eye roll.

My fault I think 😊. Happy New Year 🥰

Tumbleweed101 · 01/01/2024 14:36

I did a fairly 'light' meal compared to some mentioned.

Turkey, roast potatoes, roast carrots and parsnips,.sprouts. stuffing, pigs in blankets, gravy., cranberry sauce. In previous years I did mashed swede too as my mum liked it but she isn't with us now.

I wouldn't have the time, oven space or inclination to add more extras unless I had someone else helping.

FlipFlop1987 · 01/01/2024 19:37

Turkey
Roast Pork
Chestnut Stuffing
Sage & Onion Stuffing (personally hate this)
Pigs in Blankets
Roast potatoes
Mash Potatoes
Cauliflower Cheese
Red Cabbage
Carrots
Parsnips
Sprouts with bacon lardons
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Apple sauce

No Yorkshires as there’s not a chance they would fit on the plate!

It’s not even a week since we last had it (we reheat all the leftovers and cook fresh carrots and parsnips on Boxing Day) and I already miss it and can’t wait for next year’s 😁

Caroparo52 · 01/01/2024 19:49

Turkey
Pigs
Sage n onion Stuffing
Nut roast
Sprouts, carrots, parsnips, roasties, swede, cauli cheese
rivers of gravy,
Cranberry,
Yorkies

2 over the top puds ie chocolate roulade and lush trifle and Xmas pudding. Cream
Full Cheeseboard a few hours later.

dysongirl · 02/01/2024 03:13

I'm irish and gag on mashed potatoes 🥔
Don't particularly like any potatoes lol 😂
Skipped the turkey this year for churky 😂
Aka chicken 🐔 with ham 😋

If you make one huge Yorkshire Pudding (the way it should be made) you put it on the plate first and load the rest on top.

FourthToeOnTheRight · 02/01/2024 09:34

Our trimmings to go with our turkey roast were:-

Roast potatoes
stuffing
pigs in blankets
yorkshire pudding
honey glazed parsnips
sprouts
carrots
peas
gravy

no bread sauce - yuk

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 02/01/2024 11:44

I also did a roast for six on New Year’s Day..
Roast beef
Yorkshire puddings
Garlic potatoes
Onion gravy
Cauliflower cheese (not all my own work.. M&S 😂)
Carrots
Green beans and stem broccoli
Followed by individual steamed syrup puddings (I did make those) and cream or custard.

Ooo I love this thread!
my daughter and son in law (to be) hosted this year… but I provided the meats, yorkies and gravy, I usually buy a turkey breast roll from local butchers but he retired, and as I was unprepared financially to pay £50 for a turkey for 3 people I bought an extra large chicken, which was bloody delicious and provided enough juices to make lovely gravy, and a gammon, the rest we devoured was:

chicken
gammon
piggies
sausage meat stuffing
yorkies
garlic roasties (I’m usually a purest with roasties but SIL made them and I am converted!)
roast parsnips
sprouts
carrots (none for me 🤮)
red cabbage
cauliflour cheese
tenderstem broccoli
green beans
gravy
mint sauce (for me, family think I’m bonkers!)

i cannot do bread sauce…. I tried it once when a neighbour invited us for Sunday lunch, i didn’t know where to put it… handbag or a nearby plant 🤣

I also had prawn cocktail to start (im so ‘70’s!) and they had pate with hot crusty rolls and ‘proper’ butter 😜

no pudding as I was stuffed but there was chocolate fondant and ice cream

im really rather hungry now.

Chicken, cauliflower cheese - with MINT SAUCE!!?? 🤮🤮🤮
But… if you like it..
🤣🤣🤣

Nickysmadhouse · 02/01/2024 19:59

Yes chicken, and as a newly divorced person it was far the cheaper and actually tastier easier option 😊. Only have the mint sauce on the veg but it is delicious 😋 I mix it with vinegar, nice and sour 😜😜😜

Hulbg1 · 02/01/2024 20:13

Roast Potato, Parsnips. Carrots,Stuffing, Pigs in blankets, Yorkshire Puddings, Gravy and a goose not bland turkey.

IclimbedSnowdon · 02/01/2024 23:17

We had
Turkey
Sausage meat sage and onion stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Twice roasted potatoes (they were the best I've had, thanks Mary Berry)
New potatoes
Sprouts
Carrots
Petit pois
Cauliflower cheese
Gravy
Cranberry sauce

I thoroughly enjoyed my Christmas Dinner this year. I think only cooking for five helped, I usually cook for a lot more people. We finished up with
Christmas pudding with brandy sauce
And
Christmas trifle, for the two who don't like the pudding

Meowandthen · 04/01/2024 20:49

Jimmer253 · 30/12/2023 20:48

My dad is a creature of habit and has not changed our Christmas dinner AT ALL, for the 17 years he has hosted (he loves to host btw, and has invited varying numbers for this duration).
Turkey, Pork, Sausage meat, stuffing, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, mashed Sweden sprouts, runner beans & gravy. He will not tolerate a Yorkshire pudding unless it accompanies beef!
Next year my brother is hosting, so it’ll be interesting to see if he mix’s it up, but he is definitely turning into our dad, so I’ll guess it’s a no 😂.
I host and cook everyone at mine, multiple times throughout the year, and don’t let anyone lift a finger, so don’t feel guilty. I also put myself forward to tidy away, wash up/dry up after said Christmas dinner at dads (my bro and I do it together, and have proper giggle)

That all sounds lovely, not just the food.

I don’t like soggy yorkshires! They need to sit on the side of my plate as a supporting wall but Christmas dinner doesn’t leave the space. I’d rather no yorkshires than soggy ones
