What are ‘all the trimmings’?

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

We had with turkey:
Mash/roasties/croquettes
Carrots/brocali/sprouts/cauliflower
Stuffing balls/pigs in blankets
Yorkshires/gravy/cranberry sauce

JellyfishandShells · 29/12/2023 17:43

With an amazing Bronze turkey ( was prepared to be cynical about the extra price but was worth it ) :

Sausagemeat , chestnut and apricot stuffing
Gravy
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Sprouts
Peas
Carrots
Yorkshires
Cranberry sauce

LifeonMarsnotVenus · 29/12/2023 17:44

Just the 3 of us and we had…
Chicken/ nut roast
roast spuds, carrots and parsnips.
Cauliflower cheese and dauphinoise potatoes, (mainly for veggie DH)
peas
Chips
Big yorkies
chicken gravy with sherry added for extra flavour.

I don’t like pigs in blankets, sprouts, bread or cranberry sauce…so I don’t cook them.

No-one ate everything on offer but a selection to suit themselves.

A meringue based dessert for afters with ice cream.
No-one likes Christmas pud either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

DilkushaKitchen · 29/12/2023 17:44

I would be disappointed if there were no turkey, roast potatoes, parsnips, red cabbage, sprouts, a third vegetable, gravy, stuffing, pigs in blankets or bread sauce.

I always do

  • Turkey
  • The bacon off the turkey
  • Stuffing
  • Pigs in blankets
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Bread sauce
  • Gravy made with giblet stock
  • Roast potatoes
  • Roast pasrnips
  • Sprouts
  • Braised red cabbage
  • Cauliflower cheese
  • Swede and carrot mash
  • Peas

I always do at least three veg (other than potatoes/parsnips) with any roast though.

Wisenotboring · 29/12/2023 17:45

Carrots, roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, roasties, sprouts, brocoli, pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce, yorkshires, sausage stuffing, paxo and gravy in our house.

scorpiogirly · 29/12/2023 17:45

Pigs in blankets. Otherwise, pretty much a normal roast dinner.

Ohthatsfabulousdarling · 29/12/2023 17:45

Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Yorkies
Roast tatties
Mashed potatoes
Loads of different vegetables (cauli cheese if you're feeling fancy!)
Gravy/cranberry sauce/bread sauce.

JaffavsCookie · 29/12/2023 17:46

Pigs in blankets
stuffing
bread sauce
gravy
cranberry sauce
carrot and turnip mash
sprouts with chestnuts
braised red cabbage
roast potatoes
roast parsnips

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 29/12/2023 17:46

@Youremylobster87 No, but I’ve lived here a very long time and thought I had it sussed! Most of time people can’t tell.

  • vegetarian chestnut pasties
  • Roast potatoes
  • mashed potatoes
  • roast parsnips
  • roast carrots
  • peas
  • red cabbage
  • brussels sprouts
  • pigs in blankets + vegetarian version
  • sausage balls
  • sage and onion stuffing
  • bread sauce
  • gravy + vegetarian gravy
  • cranberry sauce
fishfingersandtoes · 29/12/2023 17:46

Roasties, mash, red cabbage, gravy, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings and at least another two types of veg, this year that was carrots, peas and Savoy cabbage.

Teenagehorrorbag · 29/12/2023 17:47

It's basically a normal sunday roast (we have yorkshires with all joints) PLUS pigs in blankets, 2 sorts of stuffing instead on one, bought posh gravy instead of my usual manky Bisto, and maybe a couple more veg than I'd normally do.

A standard sunday roast has roast and boiled spuds, and a few different veg. For Christmas I did parsnips, carrots, broccoli and sprouts. So not enormously different with 'all the trimmings'......

Boiled pots

Because mashed potato is the food of Gods.

If I could only have one type of food for the rest of my life it would be potatoes.

If I could only have the potato prepared in one way, it would be boiled then roughly mashed, but I would love to cheat and add salt and butter!

LamePanda · 29/12/2023 17:48

Trimmings -
Pigs in blankets
Red cabbage
Stuffing balls
Cauliflower cheese
Bread sauce (if having turkey)
Roast parsnips and carrots
Mashed swede and carrot
Brussel sprout gratin

(Standard roast for us is roast meat, roasties, gravy, steamed veg, Braised Cavolo Nero, Yorkshires. Occasionally we’ll also have red cabbage, or roast parsnips/carrots, but Christmas dinner for us is always roast turkey, goose or beef, plus the above trimmings.)

Friedfriedplantain · 29/12/2023 17:49

Apple sauce, bread sauce, mash, roasties, stuffing, roast carrots and parsnips, peas, gravy.
Nut roast not turkey.
That's my ideal and what my mum does. She I and half of my siblings are vegan so she'll often do two of something one vegan one not.

DH is Canadian and we're all vegan so it's different. This year he made a seitan and pumpkin seed tofu roast stuffed with nut roast filling, a chestnut pie, white wine and mushroom gravy, carrots, mash, rocket salad, focaccia, and green beans almondine, with rum baba and custard for dessert. All from scratch as we can't buy vegan anything where we're living atm.

FluffyFanny · 29/12/2023 17:49

I keep my 'trimmings' to a minimum- no-one can ever eat it all anyway and it all adds to the stress. I only make:

Turkey,
Roasties,
Carrot and swede mash,
Red cabbbage,
Creamy sprout and bacon gratin,
Sausage meat stuffing,
Cranberry sauce,
Gravy.

No yorkshires and definitely no to pigs in blankets!

DappledThings · 29/12/2023 17:49

I've never had or been offered bread sauce either. Do people have it instead of gravy or alongside all ending up mixed together?

Teawaster · 29/12/2023 17:49

We had:
Turkey
Ham
Beef for 2 who don't like turkey
Gravy
Carrots with glazed honey and sugar
Parmesan baked parsnips
Sprouts with wine and bacon
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Cranberry sauce

Zone2NorthLondon · 29/12/2023 17:49

Mash
roasties
carrots
creamed leeks
broccoli
sprout
parsnip
gravy

StaunchMomma · 29/12/2023 17:49

I always serve the same - Turkey, beef, lamb (picky meat family), nut roast (I miss it if not there - ex veggie), pigs in blankets, sausage stuffing, sage & onion stuffing, roasties, mash, peas, carrots, red cabbage, brussels, parsnips, cauli cheese, yorkie puds, gravy, white sauce, all the condiments (must have both mint sauce and mint jelly, as well as cranberry and horseradish).

Might sound excessive but we love it.

RampantIvy · 29/12/2023 17:50

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 29/12/2023 17:07

Yup, so it apparently does differ quite a lot!

They served:
Turkey, Roast potatoes, stuffing balls, roast chestnuts, carrots and brussel sprouts.

I would’ve also served: pigs in blankets, roast parsnips, roast carrots and a couple of other veg and Yorkshire puddings! - And no chestnuts!

I am still massively grateful it meant I didn’t have to cook, but the pigs, parsnips and Yorkshire’s were very much missed!

I would have only missed the pigs in blankets TBH. I really dislike parsnips, but we have them because DH and DD like them.

IMO Yorkshire puddings have no place in a Christmas dinner, and I have never been able to understand why people need two types of potatoes, let alone three types.

Chestnuts are a must in our house.

Oh and stuffing

Bread sauce is nothing like gravy?

You have it with the rest of the meal + gravy.

justlonelystars · 29/12/2023 17:50

Roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing, carrots, parsnips, sprouts, gravy and cranberry sauce.
Appreciate for other people this might also include bread sauce, mash, cauliflower cheese and peas but we’re purists in our household!

zurala · 29/12/2023 17:51

We did:
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Roast beetroot
Sprouts (sometimes with bacon)
Carrots
Cabbage
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Apple sauce (because we had pork, beef and chicken rather than Turkey)
Cranberry sauce
Gravy
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing

I don't want mash or cauliflower cheese and am a purist about Yorkshires so only with beef (but forgot this year)
