Mum thinks Dds Christmas present isn’t appropriate

Or too grown up for her at least

Shes 5 and a half and has loved music and dancing since she was teeny, she loves listening to the radio in the car and we often have music on YouTube on etc
We got her a kids MP3 player and headphones and went through a list with her of the songs she wants and Dh downloaded them. My Dm asked which music she had etc, when I told her, she exclaimed’Gosh how old is she?! Isn’t she too young for all that and this kind of present?’
I explained that Dd has been asking for a phone (no chance until high school) and an iPad (don’t want to get this yet either) She watches some tv and very occasionally can do a game on my iPhone
With this MP3 player, she gets to charge it herself, learn how to operate it etc and she loves it!
Was it an inappropriate gift for her age?
Songs on it she asked for, include: Ed sheeran, Imagine dragons, Harry styles, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Vanilla ice 😂Bob Marley..just a mix of random songs she likes

I think thats a lovely present.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 28/12/2023 22:55

No, it’s fine. I got my 6 year old an Alexa. He’s spent the afternoon singing along to kids pop in his bedroom!

JMSA · 28/12/2023 22:55

Fab gift!
A love of music is a wonderful thing.

Summasolstice · 28/12/2023 22:56

Yes, music before 7 summons the devil

OneMoreTime23 · 28/12/2023 22:56

I bought my DD an iPod touch at 9 months so I didn’t always have to use my phone for her nap music!

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 22:57

It’s the song choices that she’s making me feel worried about now-some dance and rave type ones (a silly crab rave thing 🤷🏻‍♀️) and Who let the dogs out…it’s ok, isn’t it? 😬 She has some Beatles in there so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wtf?
I think it's an ideal present

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 22:59

@Summasolstice 😂 She has just made me doubt things a bit. I was thinking before that maybe it *Wasnt that great for a 5 year old to be walking around playing Snoop dogg..I’m really not sure 🙈

Sorry, the Wtf was for the devil comment

Catza · 28/12/2023 23:00

Of course it’s ok. The “what is that rubbish young people listen to nowadays” thing is as old as time.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:00

@vonniee But even the music we put on it? I did include some Frozen tracks but she got annoyed they were on it..she did used to like it

Download "White Lines", that's a great tune and she can learn a rap for Nanna 🥰

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:01

@vonniee I think it was a joke…well I hope so 😅

Nice present but awful songs!

theduchessofspork · 28/12/2023 23:01

Great present

What is your mum on?!

Janetinthebath · 28/12/2023 23:02

It’s not inappropriate, I assume she had other presents too?

Generally, I think it’s nice to give children childlike gifts that will engage their imagination while young. So teddies and small world toys like Sylvanian families or Playmobil and the like, while they’re still young enough to enjoy them.
But there’s nothing wrong with an MP3 player, especially if that’s what she wanted!

mynameiscalypso · 28/12/2023 23:02

I'm very glad Vanilla Ice made it on there!

SisterMichaelsHabit · 28/12/2023 23:02

I don't see the issue. Most shops play those artists as background music, she's going to hear it all over the place. It depends on the specific tracks as most artists have some risque stuff but most also produce a "clean version" of everything (including Cardi B lol) so I think you're fine with a bit of Ed Sheeran and Beyonce.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:02

@TheFormidableMrsC 😂It is a classic

That PP was JOKING

It’s only under 6

SisterMichaelsHabit · 28/12/2023 23:03

I mean it's not like you've put Little John or System of a Down on there. 🤣

Fionaville · 28/12/2023 23:05

I think your mum's being a bit silly. Kids like music and this is much easier than giving them a CD player (that constantly skips) and a pile of CDs like my eldest had. I had a little tape player when I was little. Kids have always liked a way of playing music.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:05

@Janetinthebath For sure, she’s got all those types of toys also…this is the first thing she’s had like this, I think I was 8 upwards though before I had this type of thing. She really wanted headphones though and does adore music. She sets it up (without headphones obvs) by the side of the trampoline and jumps around/dances to it

I would just screen songs (google lyrics) for suitability -friends didn't and their 6 year old was reciting all kinds of inappropriate stuff she had access to (you tube unsupervised in her case) her parents thought it was hilarious, the school did not when other parents complained about what she was teaching them in the playground!

PaperSky · 28/12/2023 23:07

Sounds fine!

Doesn’t sound like anything that’s not played in the shops/radio etc

just ignore her
