Mum thinks Dds Christmas present isn’t appropriate

Or too grown up for her at least

Shes 5 and a half and has loved music and dancing since she was teeny, she loves listening to the radio in the car and we often have music on YouTube on etc
We got her a kids MP3 player and headphones and went through a list with her of the songs she wants and Dh downloaded them. My Dm asked which music she had etc, when I told her, she exclaimed’Gosh how old is she?! Isn’t she too young for all that and this kind of present?’
I explained that Dd has been asking for a phone (no chance until high school) and an iPad (don’t want to get this yet either) She watches some tv and very occasionally can do a game on my iPhone
With this MP3 player, she gets to charge it herself, learn how to operate it etc and she loves it!
Was it an inappropriate gift for her age?
Songs on it she asked for, include: Ed sheeran, Imagine dragons, Harry styles, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Vanilla ice 😂Bob Marley..just a mix of random songs she likes

so long as the songs are radio version and your little one isn't going to be learning words from NWA

meh. My 5 year old listened to Fuck Tha Police when I did. I’d rather rebellious music than the shitty over sexualised stuff.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:54

It’s true that we didn’t notice all the lyrics etc as kids, I also loved ‘When I think about you I touch myself’ 🙈and Madonna when very young-I mean, Like a virgin 🥹

Sounds great. My boys have all loved music. My 9 year old loves school disco type stuff (ymca, Barbie girl etc) and thinks it's brilliant that I know all the words. My teenagers are very unimpressed at his choice of music though!

yip, great idea!!👏👏👏

miniaturepixieonacid · 28/12/2023 23:55

Sounds like a fab present to me and great that she already knows what music she likes. Just screen the lyrics of individual songs for suitability. My friend has a musical theatre obsessed 5 year old. Didn't see the need to screen her choices and got pulled aside by the teacher because the kid was belting out Chicago songs across the playground! 😬😆

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:56

@OhcantthInkofaname There’s one Taylor swift song on there, but she’s not massively girly and into that kind of thing, it’s more Uptown funk or crab rave 😂

Sorry, the Wtf was for the devil comment

A joke!

StaunchMomma · 29/12/2023 00:00

I take it your Mum's not a big fan of music?

I think it's great when kids take an interest in music.

Also, Crab Rave is a banger!! 😂

Music is fine. Could she be worried that using headphones at such young age may impact her hearing?

user1492757084 · 29/12/2023 00:12

Sounds good.

Screen songs for lyric and language suitablility and regularly check that she is not setting the head phones too loud and damaging her hearing.
Can she set it up for Karaoke?

Timeafterthymes · 29/12/2023 00:12

@Redpaisley They’re special childrens ones where the volume can’t go to high etc

It’s a great present. I’d pop a few kidz bop albums on there, that way she can listen to lots of pop songs without worrying about bad words.

HoppingPavlova · 29/12/2023 00:14

I was going to respond YANBU, until you threw in Michael Jackson ………

RedToothBrush · 29/12/2023 00:16

Inappropriate in what way?

Cos its not got Andy and the Odd Socks on it?

PastorCarrBonarra · 29/12/2023 00:16

I got a record player and the Grease soundtrack album when I was 6. Kids these days don’t know they’re born 😀👍

Wokkadema · 29/12/2023 00:17

Sounds like a perfect gift! And look - you know your kiddo. You know what she likes but also what she's exposed to in everyday life and how she handles it. You don't need us or your mum to approve!! Of course as mums we always want to think things through and make sure we make the best choices we can - but we also have to back ourselves and not get thrown by everyone else's opinions.
Only thing I would be careful of is the volume, need to protect her hearing so she can still enjoy music when she's a granny herself 😊

Benibidibici · 29/12/2023 00:18

My 4 year old has a kids music/audiobook player (yoto). We made music cards, she also likes imagine dragons, plus there's stuff like George ezra she loves

Benibidibici · 29/12/2023 00:20

Oh and my DC has yoto headphones too.... is this not quite common? I know loads of kids with these. My dc have spent December listening to christmas pop songs, 6 year old bloody loves wham

I wish I'd thought of something like that for my 7yo. She likes watching music videos on YouTube. Disturbed sound of silence seems to be her favourite right now.

When she was about 2/3 she loved dancing to Metallica.

Your little one has great taste in music , Disturb's version of Sound Of Silence is a excellent song.

@Timeafterthymes, as many pp have said its a great gift , I think music has a way of connecting us like nothing else has.
Also the fact that she is dancing and jumping around is much better for her health than sitting watching TV.

Could you carefully bring up the conversation with your mum about the music she ( and you ) listened to when growing up .
If you can get her reminiscing about music she liked at about the same age as your dc she will hopefully realise its just the 'new' way to enjoy music now .

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 29/12/2023 00:56

Mine sing those. Don't give it another thought

Devilsmommy · 29/12/2023 00:56

SisterMichaelsHabit · 28/12/2023 23:03

I mean it's not like you've put Little John or System of a Down on there. 🤣

My 15mo loves a bit of system of a down🤣

HolidaysPleaseNow · 29/12/2023 01:08

I have a 4 year old and she has her own playlist on alexa. Whenever we are out and a song she likes comes on the radio, she asks for it to be added to her playlist. I love that she loves music! She enjoys the most random stuff as well, she's not into Disney songs etc.

Bournetilly · 29/12/2023 01:31

Sounds perfect to me! Can I ask which mp3 player you got please? My 4 year old got some headphones for Christmas (got them for the plane when we go on holiday) but she loves them and hasn’t stopped listening to music from my phone.

Don't knock Andy and the odd socks! We saw them twice a few years ago at the CBBC summer specials and they were fab! DD1 is now a teenager, and her friends have recently "discovered" indie and grunge music i.e 90s era stuff....she commented that she never realised I had such good taste in music 😆
