Mum thinks Dds Christmas present isn’t appropriate

Or too grown up for her at least

Shes 5 and a half and has loved music and dancing since she was teeny, she loves listening to the radio in the car and we often have music on YouTube on etc
We got her a kids MP3 player and headphones and went through a list with her of the songs she wants and Dh downloaded them. My Dm asked which music she had etc, when I told her, she exclaimed’Gosh how old is she?! Isn’t she too young for all that and this kind of present?’
I explained that Dd has been asking for a phone (no chance until high school) and an iPad (don’t want to get this yet either) She watches some tv and very occasionally can do a game on my iPhone
With this MP3 player, she gets to charge it herself, learn how to operate it etc and she loves it!
Was it an inappropriate gift for her age?
Songs on it she asked for, include: Ed sheeran, Imagine dragons, Harry styles, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Vanilla ice 😂Bob Marley..just a mix of random songs she likes

It is a perfect gift for your child.

I will admit I was slightly shocked when my friend's little boy (at 6) was rocking out to RATM (yes, Killing in the Name - he seemed to particularly love shouting fuck you I won't do what you tell me) and Debaser by the Pixies (again, loved to shout "want to grow up to be a debaser!"), amongst others 😅 but he's now 12 and pretty much the coolest kid with the best musical taste ever.

Your DD's taste seems tame in comparison! And a love of music can't ever be a bad thing IMO (maybe tactfully discourage the Ed Sheeran though ha)

It’s the song choices that she’s making me feel worried about now-some dance and rave type ones (a silly crab rave thing 🤷🏻‍♀️) and Who let the dogs out…it’s ok, isn’t it? 😬 She has some Beatles in there so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hah that made me laugh, when my son was two he loved scandalous by Misteeq
When he was 3 and learnt to read I gave him my old CD collection and a cd player and he was very pleased when he found the lily Allen song "fuck you"!
He seems ok so far.
So I wouldn't worry about who let the dogs out damaging your child!

Brilliant gift.

One of my most beloved gifts as a child was a Walkman with the tape of Like A Virgin when I was about 6 so 🤷‍♀️

Music is a great gift for kids - mine listen to all sorts and know that if there's a swear word we only sing along if it's at a concert. Accidentally played Don't Marry Her in the car once and now that's a firm favourite.

most music things like Spotify will say if it is explicit lyrics but she probably won't understand what they are singing anyway but best she does not say it in front of the oldies!
gone are the days when young kids like dolls etc life moves on

So many of the songs I loved when I was younger were very obviously about sex. I didn’t realise until I was much older. Children don’t generally connect the dots until they’re emotionally mature enough to do so.

Think your mum's just being a misery-guts because you've done something she regards as 'off the wall'. You don't need her permission or approval to have your own ideas so bash on. I think it's a brilliant gift.
