Mum thinks Dds Christmas present isn’t appropriate

Or too grown up for her at least

Shes 5 and a half and has loved music and dancing since she was teeny, she loves listening to the radio in the car and we often have music on YouTube on etc
We got her a kids MP3 player and headphones and went through a list with her of the songs she wants and Dh downloaded them. My Dm asked which music she had etc, when I told her, she exclaimed’Gosh how old is she?! Isn’t she too young for all that and this kind of present?’
I explained that Dd has been asking for a phone (no chance until high school) and an iPad (don’t want to get this yet either) She watches some tv and very occasionally can do a game on my iPhone
With this MP3 player, she gets to charge it herself, learn how to operate it etc and she loves it!
Was it an inappropriate gift for her age?
Songs on it she asked for, include: Ed sheeran, Imagine dragons, Harry styles, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Vanilla ice 😂Bob Marley..just a mix of random songs she likes

I censor the tunes but I think it is fairly normal for young girls to like music and dance

Rachie1973 · 28/12/2023 23:18

My 3 and 4 year olds got kindle fires! Your mum would have kittens lol.

@TheFormidableMrsC 😂It is a classic

🤣🤣

MolkosTeenageAngst · 28/12/2023 23:22

I think it’s absolutely fine so long as you have made sure to use the clean/ radio edit version of any songs which might not be age appropriate.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 22:59

@Summasolstice 😂 She has just made me doubt things a bit. I was thinking before that maybe it *Wasnt that great for a 5 year old to be walking around playing Snoop dogg..I’m really not sure 🙈

It’s just music, I don’t think it’s going to impact her negatively. I remember being about her age and belting out “Two Becomes One” by The Spice Girls and about 10 when I would perform “Man I Feel Like A Woman” by Shania Twain I laugh thinking about it now because I had no idea what any of those lyrics meant I just loved singing along to them.

Dibbydoos · 28/12/2023 23:24

What a great gift!

As long as you make sure the songs are appropriate, there's no problem here imo.

You MIL is sadly just old and therfore lacks understanding....

OhcantthInkofaname · 28/12/2023 23:27

No Taylor Swift???

Lifeomars · 28/12/2023 23:28

Sounds (literally!) like a wonderful present, lucky girl.

Epidote · 28/12/2023 23:28

I think is ok.

Yes, music before 7 summons the devil

At last! My sons have been explained!

vonniee · 28/12/2023 23:30

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:00

@vonniee But even the music we put on it? I did include some Frozen tracks but she got annoyed they were on it..she did used to like it

I mean using common sense re lyrics etc but I am sure the majority of the mainstream stuff is absolutely fine

Talktometellmeyourname · 28/12/2023 23:32

I’ve got a 5.5 year old and I think it’s fine.

Wooloohooloo · 28/12/2023 23:32

I love metal, grunge, rock, punk etc and play a lot

I'm old and think it's a great gift, me and my child used to have a daily dance to all sorts of stuff, Pogues, Springsteen, Stones, Underworld, Prince, Prodigy and many others, we would take it in turns to chose the tune. Music is one of life's greatest joys and even though I am old I still do a daily dance!

Ladyj84 · 28/12/2023 23:36

Some of those songs are not age appropriate and would not be listened to by our young ones

purpledaze24 · 28/12/2023 23:37

Only thing wrong with this gift is Michael Jackson on the playlist 😬…but that’s a whole other thread

stayathomer · 28/12/2023 23:40

She’s 5 and she asked for a phone or iPad?!? Is she into stuff for her age- teddies, colouring stuff, duplo, play dough etc?

GrandTheftWalrus · 28/12/2023 23:44

I wish I'd thought of something like that for my 7yo. She likes watching music videos on YouTube. Disturbed sound of silence seems to be her favourite right now.

When she was about 2/3 she loved dancing to Metallica.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:48

@stayathomer She didn’t specifically ask for an iPad but would probably love one and friends have them. Her neighbour pal has an old phone and he’s 6, she’s wanted one since, but obviously no way. She enjoys all other things-stuffed toys, colouring, writing, books, making things, riding her bike, trampoline, wooden doll house, she’s not especially into dolls etc though

@Ladyj84 Which ones?

MmmALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 28/12/2023 23:49

TLDR: so long as the songs are radio version and your little one isn't going to be learning words from NWA/Eminem/DejaCat or whoever is singing about their fufu these days, let her enjoy herself. I think it's really nice you've gave her something she's put thought into and has choices over what music she wants.

🎶 Girl, your booty is so round, let me lick you up and down.... I said a boom boom boom, let me hear you say way-oh! 🎶

🎶 Coz tonight, is the night, when 2 become 1.... 🎶

🎶 When I think about youuu, I touch myself 🎶

Ahh, songs of my youth 🤣

When my DS was 8, they had a talent show at school. The girls did a dance and I can't remember the song now, but the lyrics were fairly sexualised. I was surprised the Catholic school allowed it! But none of the children were traumatised or spontaneously combusted from it.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:50

@Lifeomars Love that and love all those artists too 💜I specifically remember dancing to Bruce on a bench in my kitchen at about 8 years old…she must get it from me

Ah right sorry was just checking as I have screen addicts here and have had to work very hard to get the 9 yo away from screens and back into being excited about proper playing, drawing etc!

GrandTheftWalrus · 28/12/2023 23:52

I bought sex on the beach at about 10/11 on cd single!

No I was 12. Just googled when it came out.

Timeafterthymes · 28/12/2023 23:53

@stayathomer This is my fear, I’m trying to keep her away from it all for as long as possible, my thinking was the music was a happy in the middle
