To be hurt by Xmas present

My husband of 11 years has bought me something entirely inappropriate. It's not this but for example if I was teetotal for 8 years and he bought me an expensive bottle of congac.
I got him quite good presents and got the kids to choose him something too.

I just really feel overlooked and unappreciated.
I'm upset that he got something that goes against my beliefs. He acknowledged that the item doesn't align with my morals but thought it was 'beautiful'.
I have let him know I'll be taking part back (the other part is non returnable)

Am I being unreasonable

He knew you wouldn’t want them but bought them anyway? That is odd.

@SisSuffragette just curious, why would you wear them if they were secondhand but not if they were bought firsthand. Is the principal still not the same? Sorry, I am not vegan but just curious to what the difference would be if you are against it in the first place.

I wonder about that as a justification, too.

I've seen a vegan online justifying wearing leather shoes because "pleather" is bad for the planet and anyway it makes their feet uncomfortable.

To me this is like a vegan/ vegetarian saying "Oh - I might as well eat the steak in front of me because the animal is dead anyway. But I refuse to have one killed especially for me!"

You could reframe it. He has given you the precious gift of Moral Indignation.

Grin Priceless, and it is the gift that keeps on giving.
PuttingDownRoots · 26/12/2023 10:10

I think the justification for second hand is that its more environmentally friendly to reuse an item than it is to destroy it and make a new one.

Ah!

Fair enough - I hadn't thought of that aspect.

To be fair, I think she'd already honed that skill.
It reads alarmingly like Puritanism.

Vegans wish sheep weren't being bred? So they want sheep to go extinct? Doesn't seem very kind to me..

Sheesh, I thought vegans were hard work but this thread has just highlighted how much worse they are than I thought!!

We're not all like that I promise!!

Generally, yes, ime a lot of vegans (usually the ones who give meat eaters shit if they dislike animal abuse 🙄) would be happy if a lot of the animals that humans 'use' were extinct as they don't think sheep etc. serve any other purpose.

I came off a lot of vegan FB groups because frankly, they can be utterly insane 🤣

How to tell if pearls are real or fake https://www.pearl-lang.co.uk/pages/how-to-identify-real-pearls-from-fake-pearls

Previousreligion · 26/12/2023 15:47

I would also be upset by this.

I've been tee-total for my entire life and was once given champagne and champagne flutes as a gift from someone who knew I don't drink. I'd worked my arse off for them and they put zero effort into the thank you gift. They'd bought them from the Tesco next door five minutes before they needed them. I was offended.

I think the point is that breeding something just to do bad things to it isn't justification to keep breeding it. If sheep went extinct by not being bred, no sheep would be harmed.

Bainbridgemews · 26/12/2023 08:03

I'm not vegan but have family who are and they'd rather the sheep weren't bred at all.

So we make an animal species extinct to appease vegans?

Not sure of the logic there

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/12/2023 18:13

On wool - lambs are not shorn, in Northern European countries sheep are not shorn in seasons where they could feasibly "freeze to death" without their wool coat (and anyway sheep are usually kept inside in the winter precisely because it is cold), muleising is illegal in the UK.

Well it wouldn't be 'to appease the vegans' as obviously vegans would prefer if everyone ate like them. I imagine they'd like a few sheep in rewilded areas or something. As I said, I'm not vegan myself.

He bought you pearls?! What a bastard. Time to move on, you deserve so much better than this. Secure your finances, consult a lawyer, go NC, and run for the hills.
Men are such vile creatures.

There is always some cunty reply like this, the expectation that if a man buys a woman jewellery the recipient should just be so grateful that they got anything.

Yes she does deserve better, a husband that actually knows her and buys something she would want.
