To think they should have cancelled?

We invite DSIL and family for Christmas every year. They arrive Christmas Eve morning and stay until Boxing Day as they travel 3 hours to us.

We both have children, similar age and it works well for us as we have the bigger house to put them up and they enjoy not having the cooking etc.

Anyway, they arrived this morning as planned but nearly 2 hours late. Apologised for being late and explained they had to keep pulling over as nephew has a vomiting bug and was being sick.

Why on earth did they still come!!

I have expressed I’m not happy they still came and their response was, they have no Xmas food in as they had planned to come to us and they can’t just cancel Christmas.

I think it’s really selfish to come and infect all my household and am pretty pissed off. Partner thinks I’m overreacting and it will be fine.

Shops are full of things! They should have done a shop today and not come - that's ridiculously selfish.

It's especially horrible parenting, the poor child now not at home and recovering, but forced by the parents on a long car journey and now in a house that's not got their home comforts in.

This! Incredibly selfish to bring s vomiting bug to you all

Cherrysoup · 24/12/2023 13:14

Ridiculously selfish, who does this?!

Butchyrestingface · 24/12/2023 13:14

I didn't have any Christmas food in either this morning. So I went out and bought some. Lots of other people in M&S had the same idea.

I would not be a happy camper. They sound insufferably selfish.

RandomButtons · 24/12/2023 13:14

I’d refuse to let them in to be honest. Utterly utterly selfish.

Shops are still open. Plenty of time for them to grab something.

KnottyKnitting · 24/12/2023 13:15

They put a child with a vomiting bug in a car and drove for three hours? Seriously? Are they usually such selfish, blindingly incompetent parents?

Archymum · 24/12/2023 13:16

It's probably COVID. A lot of kids are vomiting with the latest variant. I'd insist on them leaving.

mumoftwo6 · 24/12/2023 13:17

I'd be absolutely fuming!!!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 24/12/2023 13:17

Selfish pricks. Shops are open so they could have just bought food in and stayed away. Really shitty irresponsible behaviour. I’d be fucking fuming as well

MadeOfAllWork · 24/12/2023 13:19

This DH and I have both had the latest Covid. It was the cold/flu first and then both with stomach upsets after.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 24/12/2023 13:19

I would honestly have sent them straight home. Selfish twats.

safetyfreak · 24/12/2023 13:21

That poor boy, imagine being ill and your parents forcing you on a 3 hour journey to stay at someone else house.

Yes, I would be furious as you all may catch the bug too.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 24/12/2023 13:22

There is not a lifetime in which I would have even let these people step into my home. We all missed my nephews birthday last week as he was sick and it wasn’t 48 hours , my SIL was like ‘stay away see you another time’ because you know, she’s a reasonable human.

ginasevern · 24/12/2023 13:27

They sound pretty pathetic. I'd be bloody fuming and would show it.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 24/12/2023 13:30

I'm getting so angry at this and it hasn't even happened to me!

Stomach bugs can have an incubation period of as little as 8 hours. So 24 hours from now when you've got your Christmas dinner, you could have multiple people down with d&v.

Strictlymad · 24/12/2023 13:30

How awful! I couldn’t give half a hoot the fall out I would have sent them straight out the door! Aldi is open til 5- have a nice drive back. The selfishnesss of some people never ceases to amaze me, the poor dn prob just wants to be at home with his tv! Sometimes when illness strikes you miss out on something you looked forward to. Tough tits

Guiltypleasures001 · 24/12/2023 13:31

So what happens when the bloody parents come down with it and are too I'll to
Drive them home
Pair of bastards
Sorry op

OhmygodDont · 24/12/2023 13:31

Well I mean you are all going to get it now since I’m guessing the rest of their household hasn’t been confined to just that bedroom so now it’s being spread all around your house.

Like others wouldn’t have even let them in no thanks nobody want to come down with sick or shit Christmas Day.

NameChangerGameChanger2 · 24/12/2023 13:32

The shops are still open! They could head home and buy food en route.

very selfish.

Cwtshcwtsh · 24/12/2023 13:33

Ah, no. That’s terrible of them.

PoppyFleur · 24/12/2023 13:33

This happened to us one year, SIL brought sick DN over for Boxing Day buffet. We were unaware that the poor child had been sick Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with norovirus. 48 hours later half of the attendees on Boxing Day were really unwell. The only time I have ever lost rather than gained weight over Christmas. I can laugh now but at the time DH and I were so ill, it was awful.

Such incredibly selfish behaviour from your SIL, I feel sorry for the poor child having to endure a long journey when so unwell.

rainbowarepretty · 24/12/2023 13:34

Absolutely they should have cancelled. I'd hate this & would struggle to relax.

BreaktheCycle · 24/12/2023 13:35

You should not have let them in. Most shops close at 4pm today, so they have enough time to get a Christmas food shop done on their journey back home.

How is it reasonable that you all come down with a vomiting bug over Christmas?

I’ve been similarly annoyed at particular family members and their snotty nosed children turning up on Christmas Day and one of our children’s Birthday parties with bad colds, which they inevitably passed they onto us. Selfish. We now always ask if anyone is ill in their household beforehand.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 24/12/2023 13:36

There was tons of food still in the shops this morning. That was really selfish of them.

wronginalltherightways · 24/12/2023 13:40

Oh my gawd! They happily brought a live vomiting bug with them!! What spectacularly stupid, selfish people!

Shops are open today. There is ZERO excuse for them coming and your DH needs to have a word with his sister! They should have been refused at the door.

Rosesandstars · 24/12/2023 13:40

Wouldn't dream of letting them in. Can you afford to move yourselves (just your little family) to a hotel and leave them to it?
