So many people just follow the herd. Grey. Navy.

Not necessarily. I’ve wanted a navy kitchen for ever. At last I’ve got one.

MyBoringOldHouse · 28/12/2023 10:30

I love my grey and white.
I think it's fallen out of fashion now hasn't it? So much sneering at grey and white is a pretty big indicator that it's seen as unfashionable. Will I be changing my colour scheme? Fuck no. I love it. It's staying.

greentreez23 · 28/12/2023 12:17

I love grey, white, neutral colours. I find them calming. Have always had white kitchens too. Nothing to do with what's fashionable.

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/12/2023 12:20

I think the all grey thing with bling is a bit dated but as a neutral shade I like it. I have a grey fitted kitchen with warm white walls, white tiles with but wooden floor and some wood work benches. The wood warms it up. I then have lots of plants and art too so it’s not clinical.

CupofTeaAndsomeToast · 28/12/2023 12:35

Don't know if it's just me, but the grey/beige colour schemes make me anxious, like I'm in a black and white film, and I also find it depressing. I love the colours of herbs and spices, the shades of red, orange, green. Jazz them up here and there with flashes of vivid bright blue. I'm sure others might be appalled but to me it's comforting.

De gustibus non est disputandum and all that.

Janieforever · 28/12/2023 13:08

I think the issue with grey is some people went all in, and used the wrong greys, a lot of steel grey, blue grey, dark charcoal grey, which made rooms look cold , instead of the softer warmer greys, and they did everything grey, sofa, lamps, rugs, flooring, walls. One big mass of grey.

Hence it fell out of fashion as it didn’t look good and became the live laugh love of interior decor. Grey done well can look fantastic.

there is a woman on our local selling Facebook trying to sell all her grey furniture, says she’s changing colour scheme. And from what I can see no one is biting.

decorating a house with what you love is key,not what is fashionable, else you will soon enough have issues.

raindropsonatinroof · 28/12/2023 13:42

Nah, grey can be very soothing and calming. Loud clashy colours or pastels can look bloody awful and make me feel kind of anxious. I loved muted colours.

I agree and I don't like it either....

I love my greys, soft velvets and sheepskin contrasting with the wood. I find it relaxing. I don't want to live in a version of a Mexican cantina.

Just looked up Mexican cantina to see the pictures and 😘😘😘

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/12/2023 16:24

I love so many different styles from Mexican colour to minimalist. It depends on the room and the house. Currently I am favouring lots of dark walls( inchyra blue , charcoal grey, forest green) as I love how my ‘stuff’ looks against the dark. My kitchen is pale because the units are dark and my hallway is light otherwise it’s dark baby! 😆

I love this, which I much prefer to depressing grey, but we're all different.

Loving this thread; I’ve spent days reading it!! I love everyone’s homes and they don’t seem like stealth boasts at all! My house is always tidy because I cannot sit still, but tonight it is extra tidy as our kids are out and we have guests due. Will post photos once I’ve checked my name change has worked in case anyone links my previous posts and thinks wow I’d love to ransack that 40 year old kitchen!

LastRites · 28/12/2023 18:10

We recently moved in and have decorated most of downstairs but the kitchen is at least 40 years old and we’ll be living with it for a while!

I like those cupboards . I had one similar, about 35 years old. Oak. But I had to get rid, sadly. It also smelled terrible and nothing , but nothing was fixing it. Unlike yours, ours was a terrible lay out too. With 0ld built in appliances that you couldn’t get anything to fit that size gap anymore.

I’d replace the work tops and keep them, but install new ones on the right hand side to house washing machine etc in a contrasting colour, like emerald green, you could do it for very little.

LastRites · 28/12/2023 18:29

@Janieforever we are probably going to fix it up a little this year (some cupboards have seen better days!), paint the tiles and leave as is - certainly for now! As much as the layout looks okay in that photo, we have an unbelievable lack of workable work top space considering the size of the room! All good things to learn from when we finally remodel!

Fancy architect-designed everything perfect sister in law’s kitchen. No children. Mine is a bit different. Just a little. 1 child. You get the picture.

So is that your SIL's kitchen?

Or is it yours and you're being faux modest about it?

Either way, it's a bit er, not exactly in keeping with the thread is it

Looks like a soulless magazine picture to me. Not saying it is but it's my least favourite on here.

OP is probably well intentioned so not wanting to shame them for the post. But please everyone stop sharing the inside of your houses on the internet. Seriously not safe. No matter how anonymous you think this might be, you can never be sure what happens to data in the future. Once it’s out there it’s there forever.

What's unsafe about it?

Nothing.

Needed this, my house is on the market and I was starting to think everyone else had perfect immaculate houses. It’s a lived-in family home and while it definitely needs some updating in places, it’s not some vile hovel. Plus, it’s really clear from pictures and details that it doesn’t have kitchen/diner etc, and yet people are feeding back that it doesn’t. Infuriating! Plus, if it was immaculate and shiny, it would probably be 20k more!

mhrhome · 30/12/2023 18:47

Our kitchen. I have MS so it’s all accessible for me and my needs as they change.
