Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

I have never considered myself a tidy person, I think I’m quite lazy, but my god, looking at some of these I must be a domestic goddess. How do people cope with so much crap (aka much loved belongings) in their homes? It’s Christmas Day in 2 days, do you not have people coming round??

Where are the photos full of crap? I haven't seen any.
Of course people with lived in homes have people round 😵‍💫

I give zero fucks. Due to circumstances beyond anyones control there are 6 people in my 2 bedroom house right now including a 2 year old so anyone coming to visit me can put up with the "crap" or get the fuck out of my house!

Pressthespacebar · 23/12/2023 23:44

This is my house right now. I have 9 children including a newborn, just been in hospital for two days with 2 year old who has rsv. Husband went awol the day after youngest was born because he wants to live off grid.

so yes, messy, needs a hoover and kitchen needs painting hence the samples on the wall 😂 but not too bad all things considered.

@Pressthespacebar that is not messy at all! 9 children and it's that tidy, I take my hat off to you! You're doing great!

Helpmeout124 · 23/12/2023 23:51

We've moved 3 times since 2020 and these are my three kitchens. First one you couldn't swing a cat, it was ugly, sockets were wobbly, tiles where falling off it was horrid. Second one was ok, but very tight for space again. Third one is our current kitchen and although I love it and chose it, it's not finished and you can see mess in the other room

Gorgeous @Fiscus ! How old is your house?

Pallisers · 23/12/2023 23:58

@ChishiyaBat I just love that slate wall in your kitchen.

I also love all the kitchens that have proper kitchen tables. My dining room runs on from my kitchen so I went with a (beautiful - i love it) island in the kitchen as I didn't want to have 2 tables pretty much next to each other. And we eat in the dining room so it is all good. But I do love a kitchen table.

madamefred · 24/12/2023 00:01

So interesting to look at everyone’s houses especially the use of colour. Thanks for sharing.
My kitchen - I gave up cupboard space to put in the window seat - eight years old now and if you look closely it needs repainting but I still really like it. Nice to work in and we spend a lot of time sitting at the table too. And I read on the window seat.

@Fiscus that is lovely!

Thank you @Pallisers as soon as I saw those slates I knew I had to have them and they were most certainly worth it.

I've loved seeing all the homes, they are all beautiful!

Pressthespacebar · 24/12/2023 00:07

@Fiscus i love everything about yours, but especially love your tree, the flowers and the green dresser.

Fiscus · 24/12/2023 00:08

@EarringsandLipstick not super-old! The oldest bits are about 1750, the newer bits 1800-1980. It's been a work in progress for a while.

Tomatoshish · 24/12/2023 00:10

Why is everyone's household stylish and tidy 🥲

Fiscus · 24/12/2023 00:24

@Pressthespacebar I bought that green dresser from an auction for £80 I think. It's a very solid piece of early 20thC furniture that came to me pretty battered with about 15 coats of paint, I kept it as was for years until I had time on my hands in 2020 and sanded and repainted it. It's served me well!

Sodullincomparison · 24/12/2023 00:40

What gorgeous homes!

this is not our house in its normal state. This is the once a year with all grandparents, friends and their parents and neighbours coming round tomorrow.

DD5 entered with a pencil case before… with scissors, glue and glitter. Noooooooooooooo!!!!!

I’ll be happy to post an after photo around 6pm on Christmas Day. It will be carnage once more.

this photo was sent to DH as a warning to not dump three pairs of shoes, empty out his pockets or decorate the chairs with his coats.

PS there are Christmas decorations elsewhere.

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea We do. Have done for 5 years but before doing so I hired a Konmari consultant to declutter EVERYTHING! Best money ever spent!

Post party, not quite tidied kumitchen/dining room.

I must confess, the party was to celebrate that we had finally finished a whole load of work. It was the inky way I could get my ohbto finish the room, by holding a party.

Not everyone's taste, but we love it.

your kitchen is beautiful 😍 I love the wallpaper!

Sofaloaf28 · 24/12/2023 01:23

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wel · 24/12/2023 01:39

@Pressthespacebar I like your yellow sideboard thing that your tv sits on.

Sofaloaf28 · 24/12/2023 02:06

I would post my tiny kitchen but the truth is all these posts of kitchens and homes are absolutely beautiful 😍 iam jealous
I have a 2 year old who's like a tazmanian devil, the only time my flat is clean is when she's at nursery and she's off for 2 weeks so 🤣🤣 my washers broke until the repair man comes back Friday with the part to fix it, there's washing piled sky high and to top it off the dogs pissed on my sofa (he's old) so there's sofa cushions I've hand washed hanging up in the shower 🙄

OP is probably well intentioned so not wanting to shame them for the post. But please everyone stop sharing the inside of your houses on the internet. Seriously not safe. No matter how anonymous you think this might be, you can never be sure what happens to data in the future. Once it’s out there it’s there forever.

This worries me too. I saw a brief film about AI images and voices taken from photos of children from Facebook etc. it’s made me worried about posting photos now and have stopped. Shame I can’t stop my SIL etc posting photos of my child.

I'm just imagining someone stealing my identity or something and they've got my name, DOB, gender, medical history, number of children etc. (Because I'm apparently happy to post all that personal info but not how my kitchen looks), but they are unsuccessful until they find the vital bit of info that I keep the Cereal on top of the fridge 😆

😂😂😂

Ooh nice! Questions:
What kitchen brand?
What type of worktops?
What brand/website for flooring?
Also, love that the bifolds are white and not anthracite grey. Keep being told that it's 'the thing' for the inside edges to be grey and it's been lovely to see that's not the case.
