Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

A few years ago my friend told me that I should be living in a much nicer house for our household income, so I won’t be posting photos. It’s amazing how much a comment can affect your confidence in your home; I’ve never invited anyone to my home again after that.

What an awful thing to say! I hope you have dispensed with that friendship.
They were probably envious of you in some way & just wanted to hurt you.

@EarringsandLipstick not super-old! The oldest bits are about 1750, the newer bits 1800-1980. It's been a work in progress for a while.

That's funny! That's super-old in Ireland - just that it would be rare to have a 'normal' house as old as that! (Houses that would be that old & still lived in would typically be former 'landed gentry' houses).

It's fab!

This worries me too. I saw a brief film about AI images and voices taken from photos of children from Facebook etc. it’s made me worried about posting photos now and have stopped. Shame I can’t stop my SIL etc posting photos of my child.

Ummmm… I’m not sure what to respond to this.

Ummmm… I’m not sure what to respond to this.

Yes, not sure there is anything to be said, if someone wants to do something nefarious with home photos they can use Zoopla or Rightmove, which gives far more info and more images. And I’m not quite sure what could be done either.

Sodullincomparison · 24/12/2023 08:32

@Freshair1 thank you. house was new when we bought it 18 months ago and we have done nothing as you can see from the lack of light fittings. Nice placeholder lightbulbs was as far as we got.

Any suggestions?

the kitchen is from Howdens

the top is quartz ( I chipped it getting a dinner plate out of the cupboard and a specialist had to come and fix the missing piece)

The floor is solid oak flooring.

The bifolds in the living room are also white- I didn’t know it wasn’t usual.

it has glass on both sides so all the neighbours see it in its lived it state and normal chaos.

this room is made for gathering people together and one of DH’s colleagues said the house was out of proportion as the living room is more of a snug/ den. Each to their own.

Sodullincomparison · 24/12/2023 08:37

@Fiscus loving your tree and dresser. Looks like a dining table where hours pass with good company.

Nannyseaside · 24/12/2023 10:08

How sad, life is too short,to be jealous of perfect homes on social media platforms, they are proberly just stock photos anyway, taken off the Internet,

TheRussiansHackedMyKitchen · 24/12/2023 10:57

Why did a poster comment about tea towels being "out on display"?
Where are you supposed to hang them then? The Aga/ oven door handle is practical; they're in constant use.
Mine get changed daily so they're clean. Confused

We've moved 3 times since 2020 and these are my three kitchens. First one you couldn't swing a cat, it was ugly, sockets were wobbly, tiles where falling off it was horrid. Second one was ok, but very tight for space again. Third one is our current kitchen and although I love it and chose it, it's not finished and you can see mess in the other room

I can't tell which one is which as they all look nice kitchens !

Mogwais · 24/12/2023 11:10

Mine too, I have a toddler, 2 teens & a messy dh, always looks likes the aftermath of a tornado in a morning within an hour of them all being downstairs 😆

Pluvia · 24/12/2023 11:30

Proper home, @Fiscus. Lots of evidence of life going on. I used to do surveys in peoples' homes and I grew to absolutely hate all the modern, soulless, no-one-cooks-or-eats-in-here kitchens. There were places where the dog or cat's water was kept with cling film over it and the pet had to ask for a drink!

So many people just follow the herd. Grey. Navy. Black granite — no, no, get rid of the black granite, you need white marble... The people who apologise for the mess most are those who live in almost clinical surroundings.

80s, early 90s. Lived on Trig Hill, went to Te Hurihi. Wonder if our paths crossed!

I think they would have although it was still Waiheke Area School for me so there was an age gap. Same timeframe though, what a spin-out ❤️

MyBoringOldHouse · 24/12/2023 12:30

My kitchen is absolute chaos at the moment and my living room is, well, it's just not Christmas unless your house looks like the aftermath of Santa's elves Christmas works do 😁. I don't do subtle. Or tidy. 🤣

Is it a fake or real one? We have a big fake twiggy tree with lights, fell over endlessly last year but this year we put it in a heavy garden pot and filled it up with earth - worked a treat!

It's a real one! But the stand isn't quite heavy enough for the winds we're getting at the moment... DH has now roped it to another tree to stop it falling over 😂

Unexpectedlyexpected · 24/12/2023 12:46

Our very modest micro home on Christmas Eve, however, we await in eager anticipation for festive celebrations on Christmas day. I do hope that each and everyone out there feels appreciation for what they have and harbour no hard feelings for what each and everyone of us don't have ! Happy Christmas all.

@Unexpectedlyexpected I dream about living in a tiny house/small house. So cosy and lovely, easy to clean, less maintenance, no storage for crap. All perfectly compact and just enough. ❤️ your home, it looks lovely.
I was also enjoying the boat post, again just enough.

My first flat was very small, very Bridget Jones, happy times, life was a lot simpler then.

Unexpectedlyexpected · 24/12/2023 15:42

There is certainly a romanticism to the simpler life and you are right, people can be happy with just enough. Great thoughts for the festive season. Thank you for your thoughts and happy Christmas.
