Was I unreasonable to do this?

So..done my usual supermarket shop this evening and noticed the food/toy donation trolley looking a bit bare.

I paid for my shopping as usual, then went back round the aisles and picked out two toys worth around £10 each and put them in the bank (didn't pay)

Supermarkets make a huge profit and felt sad for families in hostels etc this Christmas!

It's a special level of stupid that shoplifts then posts about it proudly on Mumsnet.

EveryKneeShallBow · 22/12/2023 09:16

Yeah, think I might pop round to yours and steal something later, like your car, or something from your jewellery box, or maybe just that naice ham from the fridge. I’ll give it to someone needy, so it’ll be all good. 👍🏻

Muchof · 22/12/2023 09:19

KissyMissy · 21/12/2023 22:54

Not stealing as technically never left the store! I make monthly donations to charity, plus the items didn't have the tags/stickers on 😊

Of course it was stealing! How do you not see that.

rumred · 22/12/2023 09:22

@KissyMissy good for you. The mega rich are getting richer and there's so little we can do. Me and Robin Hood approve

I'm flabbergasted by how upset people are getting. I think it was genius 😅

Are you 12 or do you not know what genius means?

tensmum1964 · 22/12/2023 09:45

I have actually, albeit many years ago. My comment was tongue in cheek and peoples level of anger toward what the OP did is frankly a bit sad. They should be more angry at these huge profit making stores who pat themselves on the back by pretending to be supporting the needy by getting their already hard strapped customers to purchase more of their overpriced crap and in the process linkng their own pockets. That is disgusting and they are who people on this thread should be venting their anger at.

BlastedPimples · 22/12/2023 09:46

I think people are angry at supermarkets and other huge profiteering. It's not an either or position.

But you can't just nick stuff and say, "Oh the shop makes a lot of money anyway. It's ok."

What a bizarre position to take.

GalileoHumpkins · 22/12/2023 09:50

Why didn't you just buy something to put in? You achieved nothing Lightfingered Lil 🙄

When the charity collect the donations the alarm will go off because the items were not paid for. It will take a few seconds with a scanner to find which items weren't paid for and they will be removed. Yeah genius...

cheesedome · 22/12/2023 10:02

It was a bit naive but the people getting really worked up about it are embarrassing.

What do you think will happen when the charity collect the donations and try to walk through the alarmed doors with items that were not paid for?

As soon as that inconvenient fact was pointed out, OP is now claiming she removed the tags and barcodes 😂

Of course it is unreasonable, you have commited theft.

With that logic you are forcing some poor unsuspecting stranger into stealing. You are essentially using them as a mule which is far worse.

backtowinter · 22/12/2023 11:40

Great thread

A modern day Robin hood sticking it to the man

And the contrarians who think stealing is good or bad depending on who you steal from

Comedy gold

Actually you know what's embarrassing? Working for a charity and collecting donated items that haven't been paid for, alarms going off and every single person in the store staring at you like you're the thief! Being stopped by security. Having your own bags search as well as the collections. In front of every customer. Oh and they also love to stop and stare and get involved with all the drama!
I work for a charity and sometimes help out with the donation collections. It isn't 'sticking it to the man', a supermarket wouldn't even worry about the loss of £20. It's the impact is has on the charity and the staff that is the bigger issue. It was a shitty thing for the OP to do, and sadly it's not actually that uncommon.

SparklyMularky · 22/12/2023 13:01

@puddypud if it's not that uncommon, the staff will be expecting it. They're not going to be paraded as criminals through the shop.

Z1hun · 22/12/2023 13:12

KissyMissy · 21/12/2023 22:57

And if it make a child smile this Christmas then no harm is done!

Yes there is harm. You've just pushed up the price of goods for the rest of us. And lots of us are feeling the strain at the moment. Stealing is never a victimless crime. Should be ashamed of yourself but you won't be.

Z1hun · 22/12/2023 13:13

KissyMissy · 21/12/2023 22:59

Ok ok I get it, I'll take that one on the chin I was being unreasonable and will make an additional payment to my local charity. Thanks guys

Should go back and pay for it in the shop instead of 'making yourself feel better' by donating money to charity. People like you make me so mad

puddypud · 22/12/2023 13:14

SparklyMularky · 22/12/2023 13:01

If that's what you've taken from my comment then you're as ignorant as the OP.

SparklyMularky · 22/12/2023 13:16

@puddypud thank you.

hellsBells246 · 22/12/2023 14:36

What a weird ethical compass. Of course it's stealing.

idontlikealdi · 22/12/2023 14:39

I really can't get my head around your though process op.
