To not do a massive 'Christmas clean'

monicagellerbing · 21/12/2023 08:51

I was always brought up with my mam every year cleaning the whole house top to bottom including things like the oven the fridge, kitchen cupboards, literally everything. I've always done the same every year and stressed myself out but this year I just cannot be arsed. The house is clean and tidy as I do keep the house nice but I can feel the fridge and oven and carpets calling to be cleaned just because its Christmas and I don't want to! I'm busy all of this week but could squeeze in some polishing if I HAD to. What do you think?

YABU - Christmas is for cleaning get it done you lazy cow
YANBU - do the bare minimum as the kids will trash it anyway

Judging by the amount of new posts on our local Facebook selling page there are a lot of people having a clear out this week!

SandandSky · 21/12/2023 11:16

I always do a Christmas clean - it just feels… right. Just about to start mine now!

DH has taken the kids out, I’m going to blast the music. I know it’s sad but I’m quite excited 😂

OlderandwiserMaybe · 21/12/2023 11:17

I sympathise @monicagellerbing My mum was very much like you describe your's doing a mad "thorough" clean before Christmas festivities.
I've always felt I need to do the same too. Something about making the house presentable for guests. (lets me honest no one wants their in-laws judging the tidyness of their home)

These days I do try and clean up as much as possible but the jobs like cleaning oven and fridge generally wait until after all the christmas food has been eaten!

Just relax - do what you have time for and dont worry aboutt the rest.

MollyPuddingBowl · 21/12/2023 11:17

If it doesn't make you tired or stressed go for it. But for me I save the big clean Until Easter as I always feel the urge to do it then. At Christmas I do the usual cleaning, and a tradition I set was all laundry washing to be done by 23rd December and no hoovering until 26th 🌲🤭. Relax and enjoy the holidays, Santa won't mind 🤶

Desecratedcoconut · 21/12/2023 11:17

Of course you clean the house before Christmas. Grotbags.

JollyJellyCat · 21/12/2023 11:20

My mum cleaned twice a year, Christmas eve and the day before we went on holiday. Took me ages to work out why I found both days so incredibly stressful.

I will do some big cleaning jobs between Christmas and New Year but we will be just averagely tidy for Christmas Day.

ReTrainTheBrain · 21/12/2023 11:20

I do it because I'm pretty disorganised generally, working etc. I have some time off and just want to be able to relax and enjoy my Xmas break with a calm tidy house and have time to spend with dcs watching films, going out and playing games without thinking "actually the time would be better spent cleaning the bathrooms"

If your house is already clean and tidy then you just do your normal tasks.

Mamadothehump · 21/12/2023 11:23

What's the point when there's so much crap everywhere?! Wait until after when all the decs are down!!

Sadless · 21/12/2023 11:24

I used to but don't bother now I clean the oven that's my new Christmas thing. Once a year sounds awful. My mother in law cleans her oven every time she uses it and she came for tea last week and she would have seen that you can't see through the glass on mine.
As long as the house is clean it doesn't really matter better to do a proper clean when all the decorations come down.

MRSMTO · 21/12/2023 11:25

Always, always have done a Christmas clean but never ever have done a spring one! Christmas is the only time of the year where we are off with annual leave, all together in our home with no holidays to go on. I want it to be clean and tidy. I do it the same weekend I put my decorations up!

FreshWinterMorning · 21/12/2023 11:25

Seems odd to clean before Christmas, as it will just be messy after surely? Confused

Also , why are you a lazy cow if YOU don't do it? Other people not live with you yes? What about your partner/DH? Why is he not pulling his weight?

Ifeellikeateenageragain · 21/12/2023 11:38

It's what YOU feel like, OP. If you feel more festive and relaxed once the house is REALLY clean then do it (I have this weird thing where I feel calm once the house is clean - I don't have to be the one doing the cleaning necessarily but it does make me feel "good". Likely an anxiety/childhood issues thing there!).

But if it doesn't matter to you then don't madly clean. It's your house. It's your life. You're in control. If wine and movies makes you feel better than a clean oven bloody get that corkscrew now and get the streaming services going and have a lovely lovely Christmas in YOUR home.

Charlize43 · 21/12/2023 11:45

I used to do it as I thought it was a great way to start the New Year!

I'm 57 now and the urge is different.

longtompot · 21/12/2023 11:45

I'm just doing the usual weekly clean before Christmas so the house looks nice in photos😊 In the past where I've not done the clean I then see bits on the carpet or dust on the record player etc
I wouldn't go as far as cleaning inside cupboards, but I will be giving the oven a once over.

HolyZarquonsSingingSeals · 21/12/2023 11:49

Jesus won't mind and neither will Father Christmas.

Bookworm1111 · 21/12/2023 12:12

You've reminded me I need to clean the bottom of our oven! Something spilled and it's emitting smoke now. 😳

I always clean before our Christmas guests descend, but it's no deeper than a usual weekly clean. That said, I have thoroughly cleaned the fridge from top to bottom this week, but only because it was getting manky!

Mills86 · 21/12/2023 12:14

Personally, my slobby behaviour over the Christmas period doesn’t really work with a newly spotless house. And all the cooking and guests with sticky-fingered toddlers makes everything feel a bit manky again. I prefer to do the big clean in Jan when the decs come down and you get some hints of spring light through the windows revealing your skirting boards. 🙈

Calmdown14 · 21/12/2023 12:17

This is not helping to motivate me to do the ordinary clean I need to get on with, let alone a Christmas mega one!

I have focused on wrapping so far and it will get a quick blitz.

Over the last couple of weeks I have gutted the kids toy cupboards so the new stuff can find a home as putting away the Christmas stuff is my most hated job!

My carpets are awash with Hama beads and diamond dots, the table is lined up with Christmas drawing and there's an almost finished Christmas colouring canvas on my coffee table. I've got no chance!

But the kids love all the making stuff in the run up to Christmas. It's part of it for me

In a couple of years they'll be in their rooms ignoring me so I'll maybe have an immaculate house then!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 21/12/2023 12:21

Never done in our family and TBH I see no reason to start!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/12/2023 12:23

It's fine to leave a deep clean especially as you think it Has to be done
The only extra thing I do is make sure rubbish and packaging is binned
I did clean out my glasses cupboard but only because I bought new glasses and binned the random collection

Bouncyball23 · 21/12/2023 12:30

I used todo the big clean for Christmas then realised how pointless it was as house was always a mess untill January when dc go back to school.
Now I give each room a good tidy then do a big clean up once decorations are down and dc back at school.

MeinKraft · 21/12/2023 12:33

I used to do this but I'm just too knackered this year to deal with Santa's home inspection. I'll try to stop it from becoming a total shithole but it will not be immaculate.

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/12/2023 12:33

I work full time (last day today), I have a small child, I've just had Covid and I already don't have time to do all the decorating and wrapping and other Christmas jobs. No am I not doing a deep clean of the house as well 😂

Nudgethatjudge · 21/12/2023 12:37

I've just cleaned out the cutlery drawer.
My mother might look in it.
I am in panic mode.

Soccermumamir · 21/12/2023 12:42

I like to do a big clean when the tree comes down. Feels like a spring clean then.
