To not do a massive 'Christmas clean'

monicagellerbing · 21/12/2023 08:51

I was always brought up with my mam every year cleaning the whole house top to bottom including things like the oven the fridge, kitchen cupboards, literally everything. I've always done the same every year and stressed myself out but this year I just cannot be arsed. The house is clean and tidy as I do keep the house nice but I can feel the fridge and oven and carpets calling to be cleaned just because its Christmas and I don't want to! I'm busy all of this week but could squeeze in some polishing if I HAD to. What do you think?

YABU - Christmas is for cleaning get it done you lazy cow
YANBU - do the bare minimum as the kids will trash it anyway

I make sure the house is clean and tidy for guests, but that’s all!

snowlady4 · 21/12/2023 09:24

If your house is already clean, don't clean it!- pour yourself a nice drink, put your feet up, put a Christmas film on and get stuck into the Christmas chocolates while you're at it!
Have a rest!!
I also grew up with the Christmas cleaning! Despite my mum keeping the house absolutely immaculate all year! I'm not doing it. The house is fine. I've worked my arse off last few months an I'm having a rest now!

Why would anyone clean their house for Christmas?

Why would anyone start a thread asking if it’s ok not to do it?!

no one will care apart from you! Dont do it if you don’t want to, have a glass of something and a mince pie instead!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/12/2023 09:27

I used to do a massive deep clean between Christmas and new year as I was off work and had time then but not now I’m retired. I did it in the summer because I didn’t want visitors seeing my grunge.

Mangotango39 · 21/12/2023 09:29

Oh I do this. No idea why but I do haha!

SedentaryCat · 21/12/2023 09:32

My mum used to really stress about the Christmas clean - everything was wiped, washed, polished and scoured to within an inch of it's life. It's taken me quite a while to get out of this but for the last couple of years I've relaxed out of it.

As long as the kitchen and bathroom are clean and the clutter moved from the hallway it'll be OK.

ToniTTtopaz · 21/12/2023 09:33

Basic clean for Christmas, BIG clean usually new years day when we take the tree down ready for the new year. Just feels right that way.

readymealeater · 21/12/2023 09:33

I used to do a massive deep clean between Christmas and new year

I prefer to do a massive deep clean between New Year and Christmas 😂

Peridot1 · 21/12/2023 09:35

I was brought up with the house being cleaned for Christmas. I tend to try to do it too but before the decorations and tree go up.

@YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan - I was almost your mother this week with the basket of ironing! Then I looked through it and realised that it’s all stuff I hate to iron - mainly linen summer stuff. So I dealt with it by hiding it in the wardrobe till it’s needed!

I wanted to wash the inside of all the windows- did downstairs a couple of weeks ago and had upstairs on my list for this week but have that horrid cold that’s doing the rounds and can’t be bothered.

Ambi · 21/12/2023 09:37

I do a big clean when the decorations come down on NYE. Love to start the NY with a sparkly clean house.

confiscatedtables · 21/12/2023 09:39

We do spring cleaning in Feb half term or Easter hols.

Strugglingtodomybest · 21/12/2023 09:39

I have never heard of this. Don't stress yourself out OP, there's really no need!

Olika · 21/12/2023 09:39

My parents do this so yesterday we cleaned the house but not the usual way as we have two adults out of three sick. We just hoovered, mopped, dusted, cleaned bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Afterwards we decorated the house and put the tree up.

SpringleDingle · 21/12/2023 09:40

I do like the house to be clean and tidy for Xmas eve but not a Spring clean level - just a normal sort out, fling the hoover round and a quick dust.. I am lucky that this year I am away now and my cleaner did her normal clean just before I left. When I get back on Xmas eve it will still be tidy!!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 21/12/2023 09:43

My Last dust happens when the decs go up. I will clean again in Jan.

I do Floors and bathrooms of
Course but the house gets thrashed over xmas. What's the point in cleaning properly.

OhmygodDont · 21/12/2023 09:44

Yeah we clean for Santa 😂 judgy old bastard he is clearly.

Its A good excuse to get the children to go though all their toys and room spotless otherwise there’s no room for new stuff.

All my ironing will be done so I’ve not got school uniform floating around downstairs waiting to be done and then it’s one less job to do between Christmas and new year.

I have no plans to get the carpet cleaner out though as I spot clean that where needed as and when.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 21/12/2023 09:44

Sat here delaying my 'christmas clean' scrolling Mumsnet! Totally a thing where I'm from. Otherwise father Christmas will know you're a slob!

There is logic though - if my house is clean and tidy before Xmas I can really relax over Xmas hols. Don't fully relax if I can see jobs need doing.

The guilt of not doing it is quite ingrained!

mushroommummy · 21/12/2023 09:48

Yep this is how I do it too, I spent the whole day cleaning and even did a run to the dump with old clothes. BUT I do this every year because I like to do it, if you don’t want to or it stresses you out then just don’t. Enjoy your Christmas and don’t worry about it, life’s to short.

WinterNamechange · 21/12/2023 09:48

My mum wouldn't let us put up any decorations until the big clean had been done. It always stressed her out - even with us helping - and it ruined the day for everyone. As an adult I do try and declutter a bit in the run up to christmas, but do it when the DC are at school and no-one is there to get caught in the cross fire!

TicTac80 · 21/12/2023 09:52

My parents' house was always spotless and tidy, but (as kids) we had to make sure our rooms were tidy and cleaned or Santa wouldn't like it. These days, I don't do any special deep clean before Xmas. We tidy/clean as we go along (normal cleaning) and then declutter monthly-ish (to keep on top of things). Deep clean done every 3-6 months/when I can be bothered!!

AxolotlEars · 21/12/2023 09:57

We do a full clean in September/October and then not until January/February. It's just another thing that ends up on, mostly, women's to do list!

MechyMagic · 21/12/2023 09:57

I do a big tidy - clear tabled and surfaces with a cursory wipe over, put clothes away and anything else that isn't actually where it lives. Maybe wipe the fridge over ahead of putting christmas food in it. But not point deep cleaning until after Christmas has been done especially the oven.

Normally somewhere between Christmas and New Year when cheese hangover has worn off a bit 😁

OnceUponATimeInChristmasTime · 21/12/2023 09:57

The Christmas clean is definitely a thing here! I've just had to have a word with myself because I felt guilty for changing the beds today and not on Christmas Eve, like I usually do. Bed change day is Thursday and I just don't want to do it on Christmas Eve this year. But I've really had to talk myself into acknowledging that it's ok!
I'm not as bad as my mom though! She always used to run herself into the ground and got herself into a right foul mood at times.
It's lovely to have a nice tidy house at any time, I think. And I definitely feel more relaxed when I look around and think everything is done. But I don't get into cleaning cupboards and ovens like she does. No one else is going to be looking in there!

Warwickshireisnice · 21/12/2023 09:57

Was going to do a good old clean but now have a rotten cold and feel rough so saving my energy and also realising it’s not a necessity 😃

gwanmen · 21/12/2023 09:03

Nah, a bit of dust is festive.

Love this!
