To not do a massive 'Christmas clean'

monicagellerbing · 21/12/2023 08:51

I was always brought up with my mam every year cleaning the whole house top to bottom including things like the oven the fridge, kitchen cupboards, literally everything. I've always done the same every year and stressed myself out but this year I just cannot be arsed. The house is clean and tidy as I do keep the house nice but I can feel the fridge and oven and carpets calling to be cleaned just because its Christmas and I don't want to! I'm busy all of this week but could squeeze in some polishing if I HAD to. What do you think?

YABU - Christmas is for cleaning get it done you lazy cow
YANBU - do the bare minimum as the kids will trash it anyway

My mum/Mil do this and I'm sure they think I "should" do this too, but I don't want my children's memories of me at Christmas to be frantic cleaning and stressing in the kitchen. I'd prefer a messy house and frozen veg with more time to play Lego and do colouring.

I’d clean all day long to avoid Lego and colouring!

BashfulClam · 21/12/2023 10:29

Claim to identify as Scottish and bottom the place on Hogmanay. The idea is not to take this years dirt into the new year and also we shouldn’t clean in New Year’s Day as you wash away your luck/a life.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 21/12/2023 10:35

I don't see the point before Christmas but I do like to do a full top to bottom clean in the week between Xmas and New year. New years day is my favourite day of the year, it feels like a blank page fresh start so like the house to be organised and as clutter free as possible.

Wexone · 21/12/2023 10:36

I am cleaning at mo. my house is a kip at mo. however I my defense between being very sick work being mental and hectic social activities. nothing has been done. there be a few mumsnetters telling me I am disgusting now after living in my house the past month the way it is. 🤣 the house will be clean and ironing will be done by Xmas eve so we actually have some normality after a shite month

alliscalmish · 21/12/2023 10:37

@BIossomtoes you sound like my MIl Xmas Wink

Ooh no I love lego and colouring, just not with children 🤣🤣🤣 hearing my son tell me I'm doing it wrong because the pink I have used doesn't match the pink in the picture drives me wild hahaha.

That’s OK, my experience of Mils has been entirely positive so I’ll take that. 😉

Cleaning is what cleaners are for.

Hotchocolate2023 · 21/12/2023 10:41

I do a pre Christmas declutter that inevitably ends up cleaning missed for a while patches.

MammaTill2Pojkar · 21/12/2023 10:51

I've just finished cleaning for Christmas today (I split it up over 3 days/sections, bathrooms, kitchen + dining room + hallway, lounge + playroom + bedroom), I have tried to do a much deeper clean than my usual -it's cleaner/tidier than it was- cleaning. I have done some cleaning jobs that have been in need of doing for some time, but (though the fridge does need a clean) I won't be cleaning the fridge, oven nor kitchen cupboards... that's just taking it too far. I will also do a top up clean/tidy on Christmas eve (mostly just put away toys/quick vacuum in main areas).

My reasons for doing a Christmas clean are:

  • I was behind with cleaning anyway and a clean home feels good
  • I won't be able to enjoy Christmas as much if I still have a giant cleaning to do list running around my head
  • We have children so they will have more clean space to play with their new toys
  • I won't get to clean properly again for a couple of weeks until the kids are back in school in January

You are neither BU nor NBU, I think a clean before Christmas is a good idea, but no need to go completely crazy with it.

Nah, a bit of dust is festive.

Adds character too I say 🤣

Hbh17 · 21/12/2023 10:55

Dear Lord above, I have never heard of such awful nonsense! Never done it, never will. Who on earth needs to do a massive clean, at one of the busiest times of the year? Especially as nobody else will care in the slightest.

Zarah123 · 21/12/2023 10:55

I have 2 weeks off over Christmas so DH and I will do a big tidy up and clean after Christmas, but it's more to do with having the time and opportunity rather than anything to do with Christmas, as we are not hosting.

HelloSunshine11 · 21/12/2023 10:57

I plan to clean the fridge out, mainly to a) make room for all the food, but also to b) let guests help themselves to drinks without me feeling embarrassed about the state of it.

That'll be the extent of it!

lf4 · 21/12/2023 10:57

I'm not doing a big "Christmas clean" but I did implement a new weekly cleaning routine last Monday which means my house is cleaner than it would have been for Christmas anyway but it wasn't the purposes to clean for Christmas.
In previous years I have done the big clean after the decs come down and fresh for the new year.

wobblyweasel · 21/12/2023 11:02

When the children were young, and we had guests for Christmas I used to run myself ragged trying to clean and let everyone have a wonderful Christmas. It's just DP and I plus the dog this year, quick tidy and lots of good food and drink, and relaxing in front of the telly.

I am trying to finish up work a day early, so what do I do instead of actually working - I declog the bathroom sink, sort out some paint, look up Moomin characters, top up the bird feeder, piss about on Mumsnet. And then wonder why my list of things to do which actually matter keeps me awake at night.

Off I go - writing an abstract for a scientific conference, which of course I've left until the last day.....

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 21/12/2023 11:04

I'm doing a big clean for the new year. I can live without doing it for xmas day but need to go into the new year with a clean house.

Tisfortired · 21/12/2023 11:05

I’m surprised at all the people saying it’s not a thing! I don’t think I go over the top with extra cleaning but in the fortnight before Christmas I’ll choose one thing to do that isn’t part of my daily cleaning routine - eg sorting out the toy area, steam cleaning floors, cleaning oven, fridge, tidying out the porch and the garden etc. Maybe everyone else does these things every day and I’m just a slob 😏

But I love nothing more than that ‘ready’ feeling of a spick and span house (doesn’t last long with 2 kids and a dog) a full fridge and presents all wrapped. It’s my favourite.

LittleGreenFroggie · 21/12/2023 11:08

I moved all the furniture in the lounge to reach the ceiling for the decorations to go up so cleaned under/behind everything as I went. I've also emptied and defrosted the 2 freezers this week....they've been needing to be done for a while anyway. I'll deep clean the kitchen and dining room tomorrow as I have a day off.

I normally do the bedrooms too but not been that organised this year.

I just like a clean house for Christmas and don't want to be cleaning once it gets to Christmas Eve!

Generalquery · 21/12/2023 11:09

I do a big Christmas clean and declutter every year. My children say it’s a sign that Christmas is nearly here. I think the house has to be clean for guests, clean for me to relax, decluttered to make room for new toys and gifts.

riotlady · 21/12/2023 11:11

Ugh I’m glad I’m not the only one! My mum was a nutter for Christmas cleaning, I feel really pressured to get it all done but I just cba today

fingerguns · 21/12/2023 11:12

I am trying to have a Christmas tidy (not clean!), but here I am on MN. Again. 😂

KnittedPond · 21/12/2023 08:52

Why would anyone clean their house for Christmas?

Not buying that you have not heard of this or don't understand it.

overwhelmed2023 · 21/12/2023 11:15

I did the fridge and tried to empty the freezer but never got round to cleaning out the cupboards - not happening now!! Spice cupboard has stuff falling out if it but really can't be bothered now to do any more!
