To not do a massive 'Christmas clean'

I was always brought up with my mam every year cleaning the whole house top to bottom including things like the oven the fridge, kitchen cupboards, literally everything. I've always done the same every year and stressed myself out but this year I just cannot be arsed. The house is clean and tidy as I do keep the house nice but I can feel the fridge and oven and carpets calling to be cleaned just because its Christmas and I don't want to! I'm busy all of this week but could squeeze in some polishing if I HAD to. What do you think?

YABU - Christmas is for cleaning get it done you lazy cow
YANBU - do the bare minimum as the kids will trash it anyway

YANBU. I feel a bit guilty though, my parents house has always been sparkling clean for Christmas. I would like it pristine for Christmas because it would feel more relaxing to chill out in, but I haven't got the strength/time this year!

MammaTo · 22/12/2023 16:25

I wish I could but I feel like my mums spying on me with secret cctv and knows I’m not cleaning and judging me from her house 😂.

Christmas is the only time of year I feel any pressing urge to clean anything - I do like to do feel like everything is perfect by xmas eve.

Growing up, new year was more of a big deal for my family and my mum liked the house to be perfect on hogmanay, to start the new year off right.

I feel zero need to deep clean in spring, or before holidays. But when I sit done with a glass of wine on Xmas eve, I like to feel like everything is "done".

In summer I don't feel the need to have a clean house at all! The doors and windows are thrown open, there are filthy children jumping out of paddling pools and dripping water everywhere, sandy beach bags all over the place, wetsuits and swimsuits strewn across surfaces to dry, bbq accoutrements just sitting hither and thither. Then for some reason winter comes and I'm scrubbing and tidying like a maid in Downton Abbey.

I do a "Christmas clean" but it's because I have always scheduled two "Deep clean days" into the year - one at the start of summer and one right before Christmas - by physically writing them into the calender and not scheduling anything else on that day.

I used to work in a school, DDs birthday is early July and mine is late July so I got into the habit of doing a big declutter/clean at the start of the summer holidays as I usually had let the general cleaning go over the last few weeks of the school year so it feely like a fresh start to the summer holidays to start with a clean house. Additionally it meant I cleared out DDs old toys/games/books right before she was due to be gifted new things so there was space for them to go and I'd donate lots of the good quality stuff to my school to use during their summer programmes.

I also did the same in December - a deep clean at the start of the Christmas holidays before the decorations went up after letting general cleaning go for the last couple of weeks of term and also getting rid of DDs unused stuff right before she was given all new stuff for Christmas.

Now I don't work in education, I work in retail but I still do my 6-monthly deep cleans one in the summer and one in winter. For me it isn't stressful (well no more stressful than any other day spent cleaning) because I'm not cleaning for Christmas or because we're having guests etc I just do my annual deep clean day.

RosePetals86 · 22/12/2023 19:58

YANBU - I wouldn’t be cleaning inside cupboards or ovens before xmas day! So much to do already!

we had a deep clean before we put our tree and decorations up and just tried to maintain it which is near impossible with young dc.

next deep-ish clean will be when they all come back down in the new year.

rainbowbee · 22/12/2023 20:01

My mother did this and I have unfortunately inherited it. I only live in a small flat so it's not too bad, but I actually feel bad about not cleaning the shower floor when I did the bathroom earlier. It's not even grubby ffs. Why is this a thing 🤣

Mediocrates · 24/12/2023 14:17

YANBU

I always did a big Christmas clean, then last year I had flu and this year I have a nasty dose of Covid. It’s been a real joy to just let myself not bother with a big clean

KSJR · 24/12/2023 14:25

I am a Christmas cleaner started yesterday 😩. I keep my house very clean but everything gets it before Christmas. The oven the fridge the cupboards the toilets the beds the carpets the dogs 😂. I stress myself out with it but the feeling when it’s all done is amazing even if it does only last for a day 🙈

Bonbon249 · 24/12/2023 14:36

Give yourself a break! Deep cleaning can wait, enjoy the holidays and relax!

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 24/12/2023 14:37

We do a big Christmas clean but only because we're all off together so it's a good time to get stuff done.

We wouldn't sell ourselves short of energy or fun though, the house is lived in and it's ok for it to look lived in.

TheaBrandt · 24/12/2023 14:39

Did Jesus have views on this?!

Sophie89j · 24/12/2023 14:43

I’ve always done the same, deep clean for Christmas and I’m also doing the same, not sticking to it this year 😂
I haven’t the time or the energy this year so I’ve done the usual cleaning then bugger any additional cleaning!

Jesus is a big Zoflora man.

rc22 · 24/12/2023 15:20

I knew people growing up who redecorated the house in time for Christmas every year! I've had a tidy today and DH had a run round with the hoover. We're entertaining for the New Year so will probably have a deeper clean before then.

WilmaWonka · 24/12/2023 15:35

I used to do this but soon realised the house was messier after Christmas than ever before, all the Christmas cooking, food everywhere, crumbs in rugs, split drinks , kids tat all over the place, mess from guests.

Now I do it a big clean on New Years Eve morning. Do a tip run after Christmas. Christmas tree and decs down apart from some fairy lights strung around to keep it feeling cosy on NY eve. I like to go into the NY with everything sorted and clean and definitely over Christmas decs by then!

PostItInABook · 24/12/2023 15:39

I cleaned my bathroom today ready for my looooong Christmas Day soak using new toiletries, new book, glass of champagne etc. but that’s about it.

Do what works for you. Merry Christmas!

monicagellerbing · 24/12/2023 15:43

Well I polished the bedrooms yesterday and DH hoovered the sofas down and house has been hoovered all over. This is quite tame for my Christmas clean! Oh and all 3 beds have clean sheets. That'll do! Merry Christmas everyone 🎅

Omg OP, take it easy over Christmas, it's stressy enough already without putting more pressure on yourself. If anyone says ooh look at the muck in 'ere, kick them out. Tell em to go to the nearest nice clean pub.

ChicagoBears · 24/12/2023 15:46

If your house is clean then no worries I say. I do like to do a deep clean over Christmas (curtains, blinds, cupboards inside and out) but it’s not a necessity.

Underthesea65 · 24/12/2023 15:46

I used to, every year without fail. Too ill now and honestly Christmas is much more enjoyable without the stress of cleaning the whole house

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 24/12/2023 16:27

My mum has just popped by unannounced which was nice. But then said are you joy doing a Christmas clean? No mum I'm not with a 3 year old and 1 year old cleaning is the last thing on the list Grin

It's in the 10 commandments isn't it? Thou shalt always purchase Zoflora over Fabulosa.

FoxClocks · 24/12/2023 19:53

Did Jesus have views on this?!

He told Martha to stop nagging Mary to clean and turned the water into wine.
