Mary Earps’ dress..

Worthy winner of the sports award, but her dress? No doubt high fashion but I thought it looked very unattractive and somewhat inappropriate. I’m aware see through fabrics etc are in vogue, but it looked to me like lingerie with a skirt falling down, so a sort of corset/thong affair.

Thanks for the responses; vote is not far off 50:50, so quite a few agree with me
🙂

That's not exactly something to be proud of.

Instead of celebrating her achievements, you decided her dress was "inappropriate" - you judged her on her clothing. What exactly is "inappropriate" about it? Yes irs not everyone's cup of tea, but that's different to saying it's inappropriate.

And the vote - just be aware these on the app can't vote...

Thriving30 · 21/12/2023 08:23

It wouldn't be what I would have chosen to wear but good for her, she feels confident in it and she's just won a fantastic achievement. She's an ace goalkeeper and fully deserved to win. And she's done so much for women's football.

I've definitely saw that dress on another celeb recently & I don't think it gained as much attention - if any!

I thought she looked great

But the other celeb probably wasn't picking up an award so wasn't expected to be wearing something "respectful" and "appropriate" apparently.

I think it's fantastic for female footballers to have the opportunity to not only draw the spotlight to women's sports but also show that just because you play football and spend 90% of your day in a football kit/trackies and trainers doesn't mean you can't be feminine and enjoy dressing up and wearing makeup as a lot of girls seem to think that sport like football = not being feminine.

Mary is one who isn't usually massively "glammed up" and, especially on the pitch, she has a very masculine swagger of authority when she walks around her area in goal so seeing her dressed up in a lovely dress, with hair and make up done also shows girls that you can play football and enjoy hair/makeup and be just as "girly" off the pitch.

Likewise the opposite - Leah Williamson wore an amazing suit, she's one footballer who always looks like she's walked onto the pitch straight from an event so everyone would have expected her to wear a fancy dress that highlighted her figure, instead she wore a lovely, tailored, oversized suit that looked amazing on her because she wore what she wanted and was comfortable in rather than dressing for anyone else's opinion.

MerryMidwinter · 21/12/2023 10:48

I'm more offended by some has-been knob called (I think) Joey Barton referring to her as 'a bag of spuds' presumably meaning that she has a lovely healthy figure as you'd expect from a top athlete but it doesnt meet his high standards of how a woman 'should' look.

The dress wasn't my taste and I thought she seemed a bit uncomfortable - in fact she said as much - but I think she's an amazing sportsperson and role model and seems a lovely person which is much more important.

melj1213 · 21/12/2023 10:56

Joey Barton is just pissed off because he can't get a punditry job now he's been sacked from management of a League Once club and has decided it's because women are being given the job unjustly and taking the job away from him rather than because nobody wants to employ such a stupid little gobshite.

He has been on a little crusade about women in football of late - accusing women of sleeping their way to the top, of not knowing what they're talking about (which hilariously was shown to be factually untrue within seconds of him posting as the example he used he had got wrong himself), of having no knowledge of the game (despite playing for longer and/or winning more than he ever did) and of having zero impact on the game.

Mary was actually asked about him and his little rant in an interview recently and I think she gave the best response when asked what she would say to him and responded "Nothing, he's entitled to his opinion but I don't have to engage with such idiocy" which is exactly the right response - don't feed the animals and they'll eventually starve.

lljkk · 21/12/2023 11:04

I luffs Earps.
The dress didn't flatter her due to lack of boob support and even made her arms & tum look flabby.
However, she wasn't there for her dress, she was there for her sporting prowness & role modelness in the sport. She could turn up in a saggy bikini for all I care. So can the blokes (wear saggy pants, I mean).
Rightful winner.

IsThePopeCatholic · 21/12/2023 11:18

Awful dress. Probably her publicist encouraging her to look ‘feminine’ 🤑. She looked so uncomfortable in it.

oldwhyno · 21/12/2023 11:40

I'm not really interested in judging her fashion other than thinking she looked beautiful.

I can't even get interested in debating whether or not she was a worthy winner. It's a public vote, people vote however they see fit.

Witchcraftandhokum · 21/12/2023 11:42

Jesus wept. Can we not just celebrate how far women in sport have on the of battles fought by her and other women like her instead of criticising what she looks like, it reduces the fight to a joke.

shitsuit23466 · 21/12/2023 11:46

The triangle bit of the dress looks like a pair of underwear to me

Laffinalltheway · 21/12/2023 13:20

Bloke here, so forgive me, I know nothing about fashion.

Personally, I thought it looked awful. An item to shock and get front page, rather than look 'nice'.

Did Mary deserve to win SPOTY? In my opinion, no! Would she have won it if she hadn't had the camera on her when shouting "Fuck You!" after saving a penalty? I very much doubt it!

Get lost, Barton.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 21/12/2023 13:30

Im also appalled by the misogyny on here. Having been a life long football fan I’m absolutely delighted that women are taking a deserved role at the most professional level of the sport. In my view they are incredible role models for the next generation of female athletes.

But yeah- let’s reduce them to their fashion choices 🤦🏻‍♀️

BIossomtoes · 21/12/2023 13:32

Nobody’s done that. All anyone’s said is they don’t like her frock, ffs.

Don't be bloody ridiculous!

I'm not saying a woman didn't deserve to win it! Just not Mary!

Maybe Chloe Kelly for scoring the winner in the Euros, or even better, Fallon Sherrock for her breakthrough in the darts world!

But why is that the conversation? If you’re a woman (I sense you’re not) and you pulled off one of the biggest career accolades possible in your field- would it feel relevant or necessary for people to slate what you wore in the process of receiving it? Would that feel good? Or would you rather people focus on your achievements?

It’s just the same sexist shite that has blighted women forever. I’ve never once seen a male sportsperson be criticised online for a shit choice of suit. Yet women are a free for all. If people can’t see the lack of balance they’re a massive part of the problem. It’s shameful.

Mangolover123 · 21/12/2023 13:38

She looked bloody amazing. Fantastic achievement, fantastic body.
A woman at the top of her game, body and life confident .
Well done Mary!

(I would wear it if I was 30 years younger and had a body like hers, but I suspect I would have bottled it). Go girl go!

Funny how you didn’t lead with that- just shit winner, shit dress.

Because the thread was about Mary Earps, not about who do we all think should have been the winner of SPOTY.

But you carry on trying to justify yourself, I'll leave you to it!

BigFatLiar · 21/12/2023 13:45

She won which is good but her dress looked awful which is often true of meny of the dresses worn to these events. Did she get it supplied by the designer to wear for the event?

Well it was actually about her dress, and despite you saying you knew nothing about fashion you thought we all needed a man’s opinion to validate our line of thinking. Thank god for men’s views on women’s clothing- whether or not they have a clue what they’re talking about.

The title of the thread is "Mary Earps’ dress".
It could have been "This dress I've seen in Top Shop", or "The jumpers Ant and Dec are wearing".

I don't like the dress. This opinion (not a judgement) is entirely separate from my opinion of her as a sportswoman and the winner.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 21/12/2023 14:21

Why are there so many men popping up on mumsnet at the moment? And why do they always need to announce that they are in fact "a bloke"

shitsuit23466 · 21/12/2023 14:22

If she hypothetically accepted the award in a thong bikini would that have been acceptable and "inspirational"?

Of course they have.
Instead of discussing her achievements and awards the focus has been on what she was wearing.

It's simple sexism and misogyny. You can try and deny it but it's plain to see.
