Mary Earps’ dress..

Worthy winner of the sports award, but her dress? No doubt high fashion but I thought it looked very unattractive and somewhat inappropriate. I’m aware see through fabrics etc are in vogue, but it looked to me like lingerie with a skirt falling down, so a sort of corset/thong affair.

The lingerie showing dress is very high fashion now. I don't like it, but all the celebs are turning up in dresses that look like their bra is showing etc. Frankly, the woman hs gone from working 3 jobs while playing football for England and now presumably a fashion house has given her a designer dress to wear to an awards ceremony where she won. Good for her!

tigger1001 · 20/12/2023 11:25

Would I have worn it? No. I can only assume she liked it and therefore wore it. And hats off to her for that.

But it's hardly inappropriate.

She was criticised for swearing during games - unladylike. Now criticised for what she wore to an awards ceremony. What's the need?

It never ceases to amaze me that some women are so quick to criticise other women for not conforming to outdated, sexist stereoptypes. After all, it's not as though there's a shortage of men to do that for them...

Anyway, Mary Earps rocks, on and off the pitch, whatever she's wearing. If I had a daughter who turned out to be half as fab as her, I'd be over the moon.

TheSpruce · 20/12/2023 13:13

I had to look a video to see the whole thing since I couldn't see what the fuss was about looking at pictures. Expected the back of it to have an open cutout where her arse is or something. But nope, nothing wrong with that dress.

Not at all surprised at the internalised misogyny on this thread. We're our own worst enemies.

Tessisme · 20/12/2023 13:22

I think it's perfectly reasonable to discuss a person's outfit. There's a whole section on here devoted to Style and Beauty, so I think it's safe to say that plenty of people are interested. I'm sure Mary Earps spent a fair bit of time deciding what to wear and I don't imagine anyone told her to get a grip because the award was all that mattered.

As for the dress itself, it's not my taste, but it looks bloody good on her. I've certainly seen much, much more revealing dresses worn in this context. She isn't flashing her nipples or her arse cheeks. In fact she's pretty well covered. I honestly don't see what is inappropriate.

lepapillon · 20/12/2023 13:27

I just didn't think it flattered her figure, it's a dress that would look best on someone with a more distinct waistline.

I don't think it's internalized misogyny to find certain garments unflattering, I'd make a similar comment about a man with larger legs wearing skinny jeans or similar.

The garment was a bold choice for a high profile event, hardly surprising people are commenting TBF

Good to know you are equally shallow and judgemental to either gender.

pinklemonade84 · 20/12/2023 13:54

Some of you really need to get a grip. A young woman winning the award she has. And some of you are more bothered about whether her dress was (in your opinions) appropriate or not. I think it's pathetic in this day and age that women are still judged on their appearance

If some of you want to judge her for what she's wearing, then maybe you should go and join the likes of Joey Barton on twitter. And spout your "opinions" there

Mary Earps has been such an inspiration to so many little girls (my 7 year old included). I hope she carries on for a long time and inspires many more along the way, regardless of what she's wearing

TheSpruce · 20/12/2023 14:10

@Iwantmyoldnameback you not seeing the issue illustrates my point exactly.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 20/12/2023 14:20

I don't know that the dress is inappropriate but I don't like it but that is just my opinion.

If a male sports star had been photographed at a high profile event with a suit, no shirt, trousers swinging around his ankles, no socks with smart shoes I wouldn't like the look either.

I think people like to comment on fashion and personally I don't love a lot of Tess Daly's dresses on Strictly either.

I tried to double quote but failed which may have changed my meaning. It was the body shaming on both posts I have an issue with (waistline/ fat thighs).

Thanks for the responses; vote is not far off 50:50, so quite a few agree with me

And 50% of people think you're sexist and misogynistic. It's hardly something to be proud of!

Well the vote wasn’t ‘Is Pottedpalm sexist and misogynistic?’ so I think that's a big leap! I can think her dress was inappropriate without being either of those things. 🙂

ElaineMBenes · 20/12/2023 18:41

The fact you started a thread to simply to slag off another woman's outfit makes you sexist and misogynistic in my view.

Well you are entitled to your birw, as I am entitled to mine.

It wasn’t inappropriate, it’s an evening dress. Might not be your taste, which is different.

Christmasbrie · 20/12/2023 19:14

It's not something I'd wear but I think she looked great. Presumably she wasn't coerced into wearing it or forced so good for her for wearing something she wanted. There are lots of fashion choices and clothes I don't 'get' but I don't see the need to criticise people for wearing them!

IAmAnIdiot123 · 20/12/2023 19:17

It's just a black dress at an awards ceremony. They are always a bit more 'out there' than the dresses you see down the local golf club Christmas party.

SandyWaves · 20/12/2023 19:36

I thought the dress looked cheap..didn't like it at all

2mummies1baby · 21/12/2023 05:57

If you don't like her dress, you have my permission never to wear it.

Now can we get back to discussing what a fantastic goalie and role model she is?

spottydinosaur · 21/12/2023 06:11

I've definitely saw that dress on another celeb recently & I don't think it gained as much attention - if any!

I thought she looked great
