Mary Earps’ dress..

Worthy winner of the sports award, but her dress? No doubt high fashion but I thought it looked very unattractive and somewhat inappropriate. I’m aware see through fabrics etc are in vogue, but it looked to me like lingerie with a skirt falling down, so a sort of corset/thong affair.

In Mary's own words "Be unapologetically yourself" ... If that means wearing a dress that other people don't like, then wear it because it's what you want to wear.

Who gives a fuck what she wore? She wore what she wanted to wear, as long as she is happy and comfortable with what she was wearing nobody else's opinion matters. I personally would never wear that dress because I do not have the figure to pull it off, but Mary does and did.

OP what did you think of Leah William's outfit last night? Or Katie Zelem's? Or what about Beth Mead's when she won last year?

I love Mearps, she is the kind of role model I want my DD to look up to - someone who has hit the highest of highs and the lowest of lows but come through them by asking for support when she needed it; pulled herself up to where she is through sheer determination, hard work and honing her talent; balancing football with education as she earned her degree while playing in the first ever WSL season (she is always encouraging young footballers to enjoy the sport but not at the cost of their education) , all while staying true to herself and making her own choices.

Tooshytoshine · 20/12/2023 11:12

Loved her dress and love her.

Absolutely chuffed she won as she does so much to raise the profile of women's sports (whilst looking like an absolute goddess).

Young, fit, great body.

High fashion.

The cameras angle/screen cut the dress off and didn’t help the illusion that the dress had slipped revealing her underwear.

Perhaps her choices are to show that female footballers can choose to be feminine too. Address stereotypes.

Strong, super fit, resilient, successful women. The dress is not important.

I saw this thread and deliberately googled video from the ceremony. I think she looked great. The dress was suitable for the occasion and looked fabulous on her.

Agreed- and while the other commentators mentioned were grafting at presenting, she was grafting at playing football…….

Agree. She’s a top class sportswoman. I just happen to think that she’s not that good at the media stuff. She’s getting better though, and I hope she continues to do so as I think she’s a fantastic role model (Alex Scott) as is Mary Earps of course

Butchyrestingface · 20/12/2023 11:24

I wouldn’t wear it myself, wouldn’t want to scare the 🐎. But I’ve worse, a lot, lot worse. And if anyone is going to make that dress look presentable, it’s probably her.

tigger1001 · 20/12/2023 11:25

Would I have worn it? No. I can only assume she liked it and therefore wore it. And hats off to her for that.

But it's hardly inappropriate.

She was criticised for swearing during games - unladylike. Now criticised for what she wore to an awards ceremony. What's the need?

LuckySantangelo35 · 20/12/2023 11:27

@Pottedpalm

what exactly makes it “inappropriate” OP?

lifeturnsonadime · 20/12/2023 11:30

What an amazing role model.

The dress looks amazing on her. I agree with a PP who stated that this is great for girls to see that being sporty doesn't preclude you from looking glamourous.

CheerfulBunny · 20/12/2023 11:41

It's just a bit depressing that despite this achievement, all we're discussing is appearance and what someone wore. Mary's dress isn't what I took away from the programme last night. I thought Fatima Whitbread's award and speech was so moving (what a determined, strong woman she is) and was so pleased to see Mary had won ahead of Stuart Broad who I expected to win. And a show presented by mostly women which would've been unthinkable a few years ago.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion on whatever, sure, but I do think it's a shame this is all we can talk about.

How many times have you commented on the outfits of male winners?

Don't most male winners dress respectfully in a suit and tie?

ElaineMBenes · 20/12/2023 11:46

Don't most male winners dress respectfully in a suit and tie?

And does that make them a more or less worthy winner?
Do we ever discuss their outfit in relation to their achievements?

I don’t think it’s because they are so respectful , they just have less fantasy and imagination maybe when following the dress code?
Women occasionwear always was more fluid in a sense of fashion.

Do you think we’d be talking about it if she’d worn something simple and elegant that didn’t look like lingerie? Why do you think no one talks about what the men wear?

CharlotteBog · 20/12/2023 12:00

The only issue I have is that the sides are flesh coloured fabric and it's bunching up a bit, which doesn't make the dress lie smoothly.

melj1213 · 20/12/2023 12:28

shitsuit23466 · 20/12/2023 11:43

Don't most male winners dress respectfully in a suit and tie?

And what exactly is "disrespectful" about Mary's dress?

If she had turned up to a formal event in her Utd or England tracksuit and sliders then that would be disrespectful as it ignores the dress code but a formal dress for a formal event is not disrespectful, even if it's not to everyone's personal taste.

Equally, nobody ever comments on what male winners are wearing because men aren't held to the same presentation standards as women - I can't remember who it was now but a male celeb wore the same suit/shirt/shoes to every single event they attended for a year and not one single person noticed, but his wife wore the same dress to a couple of events and every news media outlet noticed and reported it as though it was news ...

Just look at all the news reports when the likes of the Princess of Wales wears the same coat for the fifth time in two years the news are all over her for "recycling her wardrobe" whereas every normal person just sees it as "Wearing a coat she already owns" and nobody gives a shit that William has been wearing the same coat all year.

Sartre · 20/12/2023 12:28

Wow. Forget her achievement, let’s all remark on her dress instead. Feminism obviously isn’t required anymore.

The two are not mutually exclusive. You can applaud her achievement but still not like her dress.

Women bashing women, who cares what she wore as long as she is comfortable in her outfit choice

Leave the 60s behind op! times change, women can wear what they want

elizzza · 20/12/2023 12:45

Second thread I’ve seen on this. Let the woman live.

fiftiesmum · 20/12/2023 12:50

I would love to still have a figure that could wear a dress like this (and have the confidence to wear what I wanted)
She has achieved something great this year so let her enjoy it (i presume it was something great I am not a fan of women's football or mens football either)

Allfur · 20/12/2023 12:52

I must admit it was slightly distracting whatever the achievement

tennesseewhiskey1 · 20/12/2023 12:54

Ffs. She’s won a massive award - and all you are questioning are her fashion choices?! Do better, ffs, do better!!

If you are letting woman's outfit distract you from her achievements then you need to check your internal misogyny

ElaineMBenes · 20/12/2023 08:21

How many times have you commented on the outfits of male winners?

I think that’s a bit unfair. You don’t wear a dress like Mary Earps had on and not expect people to notice it and comment on it. It’s very much an acquired taste so it’s going to be controversial.

Women traditionally wear more daring/interesting looks at red carpet events, so people talk about them. When men wear more unusual outfits (Harry Styles and Timothée Chalamet spring to mind) then people do talk about their clothing choices.

I’m not saying that there’s nothing more to it than that, because obviously there is. Plenty of subtle digs about age/body types etc., but I don’t think that’s the case for the OP.

HowdenHouseForSale · 20/12/2023 13:00

Not sure why you think it’s inappropriate, or why so many people agree with you. It’s an awards ceremony not a visit to the Taj Mahal.

She looks great. More importantly she won 🏆
