Never liked it. Never will.

OP posts:

I rather enjoy many of Richard Curtis’s films. Four Weddings is something of a classic, the Bridget Jones films are decent for a ‘comfort watch’. I have a particular soft spot for About Time.

There’s a market for films about the romantic misfortunes of wealthy white people. He’s even managed to branch out and make a pretty good film about the romantic misfortunes of non-wealthy non-white people.

However Love Actually is absolute dross. I’ve never understood it’s enduring appeal.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 17/12/2023 21:43

Only bit I found remotely interesting of Love Actually was the part where Emma Thompson is cheated on. I think she is expecting a certain present off her husband but he ends up buying it for someone else and she knows he has bought it.

Well it's 20 years old and the world has moved on, so some of the storylines are now seen as problematic.

It's very popular and loved by many, so it is inevitable that others will feel the need to loudly broadcast that they don't like it I suppose. Why anyone is supposed to care about a random, anonymous, internet stranger thinks about an old Christmas movie I don't know.

Labralion · 17/12/2023 21:55

I watched it last year for the first time. Dubbed it the Christmas Bastards. Not for me.

Yet here you are.

Catsmere · 17/12/2023 22:36

Sat through it once during Christmas at my sister's place. Loathed it. Boring, unfunny, sexist garbage. What a waste of acting talent.

bananamangoes · 17/12/2023 22:37

Yeah, total pile of crap

ChellyT · 17/12/2023 22:39

@OrangeWoolCardiWrap I have only watch bits and pieces of it and thought I might watch it this year BUT thank you for saving me a few hours... Merry Christmas 🎄

'The Christmas Bastards' my new favourite 🌸

It hasn’t “aged”. It was awful, creepy, male fantasist tripe when it was made. It was always bad.

Yes, this!

For those saying "you don't have to watch it" - I did, visiting my sister for that Christmas, there was no way she was going to turn her favourite Christmas film off just because I was squirming all the way through it. First and last time viewing it, thank goodness.

I don’t like It’s a wonderful life. Or Emma Thompson in Love Actually.

I didn’t realise we were announcing our random dislikes now, but when in Rome…

ChanelNo19EDT · 17/12/2023 13:09

Have you seen that tiktok @OrangeWoolCardiWrap a guy who is supposedly watching love actually and talking to somebody off camera. He has a romantic expression and is saying "awŵww the priminister is trying to sleep with one of the women who works for him, after calling her fat, awŵw" and he sums up each "romance" in the film in the same way, and they're all inappropriate!

@ChanelNo19EDT George Lewis - I like him!

Catsmere · 17/12/2023 23:07

@FourLeggedBuckers It's a Wonderful Life creeps me out - everything George Bailey tries to do is thwarted, his whole life is spent trapped in a town he hates. I like the film as a kid, but the first time I saw it as an adult, the overall story almost made my skin crawl.

If you don’t well up over Emma repressing her tears and smoothing the duvet to a soundtrack of Joni Mitchell, you have to hand your Mn membership badge back, apparently.

Or admit that you are in fact the Sexy Secretary in risqué underwear.

looks down at self

Nope, I’m nobody’s sexy secretary so I guess that’s my badge gone. I shall await elimination by MNHQ forthwith!

I can’t stand The Holiday. Cameron Diaz is a terrible actress. Ruins it with her flappy arms and silly goofy faces.

@Catsmere couldn’t agree with you more - most over-rated film ever and it feels like it lasts about 10 hours.

ChateauDuMont · 18/12/2023 01:51

Anything with that utter tit Hugh Grant in is absolute rubbish.

TempestTost · 18/12/2023 02:23

It really depends on why you don't like it OP.

Just not to your taste? Don't like romantic comedies? Hate Hugh Grant's weird teeth? YANBU.

Some kind of bollocks about it being uniquely offensive? YABU.

I've never really understood how people can enjoy Four Weddings. The female lead is just such a twat. Some of the other parts of the film are nice but I've never been able to get past her.

I did really like About Time though, and the one about the boat. And Love Actually is not bad, IMO. Bridget Jones I ultimately find a bit blah.

They are all rather sentimental, I think, but in a way people can identify with. Not saccharine like many Hallmark type films. Possibly that's part of the appeal with LA, with all the different stories, there are generally two or three the viewer can really identify with in some way, both happy and sad.

willstarttomorrow · 18/12/2023 02:53

It has not stood the test of time very well. Saw it (subtitles) in the European city I was living in when it came out. Did not love it but with a fun group of people. DD aged 17 has never seen it but wanted to, we did not last very long. It is an awful film in every way, not even a so bad it is good christmas film. DD just kept asking what the hell each (unfunny) subplot was meant to be about and then pointing out all the plot holes whilst I kept ranting at the usual Richard Curtis bollocks where we can all live in a penthouse apartment on the Thames whist working in Boots.

NarniaOrBust · 18/12/2023 03:05

It’s a load of old cunt, mate. To elaborate: it’s sexist, particularly fattist, garbage.

i still watch it every year, though.

NarniaOrBust · 18/12/2023 03:08

Having said that, Joni Mitchell’s rendition of Both Sides Now is stunning and well used.
