And oh my days, the whole American Girls are Easy subplot with kris Marshall! Who OKed that? A Weinstein?

TrousersAndPotato · 18/12/2023 03:17

Never seen it. Or Top Gun.

Guavafish1 · 18/12/2023 03:20

rubbish

NarniaOrBust · 18/12/2023 03:35

I did really like About Time though, and the one about the boat. And Love Actually is not bad, IMO. Bridget Jones I ultimately find a bit blah.

You mean the one that has a rape scene played for kicks with Gemma Arterton and Nick Frost in the Boat that Rocked? Yeah, totes hilair.

I’m not purposely hating on Richard Curtis. I adore Blackadder. I even love his interpretation of Bridget Jones. But left to his own devices he’s a sexist, fattist prick.

Catsmere · 18/12/2023 05:11

I started watching Bridget Jones. Lasted maybe fifteen minutes. I didn’t get one single solitary smile, let alone laugh, out of it.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 18/12/2023 05:31

Not one I like either as it is soo cheesy but we all like different things

Beezknees · 18/12/2023 06:20

I've never seen it and don't intend to. I already know it won't be my cup of tea, I don't like rom coms of any sort.

I can’t stand The Holiday. Cameron Diaz is a terrible actress. Ruins it with her flappy arms and silly goofy faces.

You’re going too far now. The Holiday is the perfect slice of implausible cheese. Who has a cow in their backyard in Haslemere?

I'd never seen it. I hate Richard Curtis stuff anyway. Posh, twee absolute dross.

My sister convinced me to watch it saying how good it was, so I gave it a go.

My god. It made me cringe and I actually felt second hand embarrassment for some of the storylines.

The stand in porn star actors being the absolute worst.

Unfunny, cringeworthy, absolute utter shite.

OrangeWoolCardiWrap · 18/12/2023 06:35

And, for that matter, who has a backyard in Haslemere? If it has grass then it’s a garden and if it literally is a back yard with concrete then it’s an unsuitable place to keep a cow.

I've never really understood how people can enjoy Four Weddings. The female lead is just such a twat. Some of the other parts of the film are nice but I've never been able to get past her.

I did really like About Time though, and the one about the boat. And Love Actually is not bad, IMO. Bridget Jones I ultimately find a bit blah.

They are all rather sentimental, I think, but in a way people can identify with. Not saccharine like many Hallmark type films. Possibly that's part of the appeal with LA, with all the different stories, there are generally two or three the viewer can really identify with in some way, both happy and sad.

Forget Hugh and and Andie - Four Weddings has a great ensemble cast, and it's a particular stand-out for the same-sex relationship between Simon Callow and John Hannah. Nearly 30 years ago it was really quite unusual to see a gay relationship portrayed that way in a mainstream film and the funeral was genuinely moving.

That level of sensitivity in Four Weddings...and then compare it to some of the absolutely crass stereotypes in Love Actually.

Barmecide · 18/12/2023 09:55

Four Weddings is like Citizen Kane compared to Love Actually. Yes, Andie McDowell is a stick, but she’s not really the lead, it’s an ensemble film. I actually have an affection for quite a lot of it — the wedding outfits, Hugh Grant’s knobbly knees, the various venues, Nicola Walker as half the folk duo — though admittedly virtually all the characters are awful. And I’ve never believed for a second that snarky, clever Fiona would have carried a torch for dimwitted, bumbling Charles. Who is pretty much her brother Tom (likewise dimwitted, bumbling, tactless) minus the castle and and inherited fortune.

I wouldn't have said that it was "played for kicks" as such.

I think this is where there is a big divide among film viewers. Some people think certain subjects either have to be not showed at all, or treated like a Victorian morality tale where the framing makes it absolutely clear that the message is "this is bad!"

I don't really think anyone needs to tell me what is bad and what isn't, and I think any subject can be treated according to the inner consistency of the film's setting. I also think that there's potentially a kind of humour in even the darkest situations and it's possible to have that explored and be quite serious at the same time.

KnittedCardi · 18/12/2023 12:13

So many haters, for so many films. They are of their time, and are light, fluffy, innocuous Xmas viewing. They are not supposed to be serious drama. The clue is in the genre "romcom". It doesn't matter if they are "problematic". Most people don't care, and don't want a sad beige, all parties represented, no offense to anyone, ever, entertainment.

Friends is often seen the same way, doesn't stop it being loved by each generation who discover it.

theveryhungrybum · 18/12/2023 12:16

Whatever 🙄

Stupidliefromfriend · 18/12/2023 12:20

It's is unforgivably shit OP, I'm with you. It's like a load of movie trailers edited and stuck together to make one movie. The prime minister making decisions that have nationwide consequences based on having a crush on the 'fat girl'. Someone else proposing to a woman he has never spoken to. A best friend stalker. The sultry temptress leading the poor man astray.

Muck.

barbarahunter · 18/12/2023 12:21

I don't like the film apart from the Bill Nighy parts because Bill Nighy is a god.
