How often? Settle a debate on what constitutes 'normal' and what's excessive please.

OP posts:

I cba to get the hoover out every night after work. I do sweep the kitchen floor every couple of days though.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 16/12/2023 21:26

Our living room needs doing daily it doesn't actually get done daily though. Bedrooms weekly, sometimes fortnightly as they don't get bad like the living room does.

Alargeoneplease89 · 16/12/2023 21:27

Everyday .. only takes 10 minutes

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/12/2023 21:29

Depends how big the house is and how many people live in it.
When I was growing up, we vacuumed the hallway every day, under the dining table every 2 or 3 days and and the rest of the house probably once a week.

Towerofsong · 16/12/2023 21:30

Once a week unless I've done something to create mess. I live alone, no pets.

WonderLife · 16/12/2023 21:32

I'd say between once a day and once a fortnight is normal.

I do downstairs maybe twice a week and upstairs once a fortnight.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 16/12/2023 21:33

Can't understand how hoovering the whole house only takes the OP ten minutes, or why it would take longer if you did it only once a week instead of daily. Surely it takes the same amount of time regardless of whether the machine is picking up a little or a lot?

Menomeno · 16/12/2023 21:34

Once a week, but it’s just the two of us now. I did downstairs every day when the kids were young.

PianPianPiano · 16/12/2023 21:35

Once a week when the cleaner comes. And will get the cordless out from time to time when needed (usually after ds has traipsed those black rubber bits everywhere from playing football on Astro Xmas Hmm)

Children and cats in our house.

UndertheCedartree · 16/12/2023 21:35

I think it depends as for example some people always use their hoover in the kitchen, whereas others sweep. I hoover out bedrooms once per week. I usually sweep the hard floors downstairs daily and probably use the hoover a couple of times a week down there. Bathroom floor is done once a week.

fallingapart2 · 16/12/2023 21:23

Surely, for those people that do it once a fortnight it must take ages? To deep clean to that level, all the dust and shed hair, both human and pet?
If you do it daily it takes about ten minutes max. I use a cordless Dyson and just run it round every room quickly, doing the odd under the bed or behind this chest of drawers if it hasn't been done in a few weeks. I don't break and sweat and it's not a big deal. But if I left it a week the carpets would be minging with sock fluff and dust and crumbs and dropped bits of crap. I can't imagine not doing it daily, but DP insists that I'm OCD about it. 🤷‍♀️

I'm with you. Before I got my PA my care agency were only hoovering once a week and my house felt so dirty!

Kwasi · 16/12/2023 21:35

Stairs and upstairs once a week. Living room 3-4 times a week.

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 16/12/2023 21:39

How are you all managing to Hoover so infrequently.
I do all of ground floor daily, in fact usually twice daily.
Middle floor also daily.
Top floor probably weekly but needs doing daily, the only reason I don't do it more is because I rarely go up there, so what I don't see ........
We're a big but not particularly messy family.

Do you work?

riotlady · 16/12/2023 21:43

We do downstairs probably every 2-3 days, upstairs weekly. I would say weekly
is probably average if you don’t have fluffy pets/small messy children tho

hellsBells246 · 16/12/2023 21:46

Every month??

newusern99 · 16/12/2023 21:49

For those who vacuum daily without a robot what kind of vacuum do you use. Ours likes in a cupboard (cylinder) and getting it out and plugging it in more than once a week is a big faff. I’ve just bought a cordless shark so started doing it more often but I would never faff around with a bigger machine more than once a week

newusern99 · 16/12/2023 21:52

Before the cordless I’d sweep the kitchen and hall regularly but only hoover those rooms once a week. Much easier to sweep than get a heavy hoover out

Mumof118 · 16/12/2023 21:53

I vacuum daily. I have a Henry and a couple of GTech hylights and keep them on each floor (3 story).

The Henry is on the middle floor which is the least used, and the hylights are on the other floors for a quick push around whenever I see a few ‘bits’ (my carpets are cream).

It’s no bother and takes a few seconds to keep on top of the carpets, so I would think it rather abnormal to watch my carpets get mess build up over a week.

hellsBells246 · 16/12/2023 21:54

We have no pets and one teen at home. Plus I hate hoovering.

TheGoogleMum · 16/12/2023 21:54

Cleaner does it once a fortnight. We'd only do it in between if there was a bad/unsafe mess, or if someone was coming over who's judgement we care about. I'll admit we could do with doing it more often. We have cats and young children.

A Henry. I hate uprights. I've had it 10 years and it's like new!

Mumof118 · 16/12/2023 21:57

@newusern99

GTech Hylight. Very small/compact, lightweight and cordless, charging fast.

We don’t have pets or small children though, so it’s ideal for bits of fluff off socks and a few crumbs etc I’m not sure it would be powerful enough for heavily used flooring.

I use the Henry all over the house once a week to pick up any deep dust.

Supersimkin2 · 16/12/2023 22:00

Once a week when I had pricy carpets - too much hoovering kills them.

I wet brush the concrete terrace, ditto front entrance. You’d be amazed how much outside gunk doesn’t get in when you pre-empt it. Satisfying.

Pale hard floors = robovac. Muddy pawprints 🐾 are charming - NOT dirt.
