How often? Settle a debate on what constitutes 'normal' and what's excessive please.

Every day, at least once, got a very furry dog!

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/12/2023 09:04

Couple of times a week, maybe more in the kitchen.

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 09:11

I dont really understand people that sweep a floor when hoovering is quicker and more effective

I do have a cleaner, should have mentioned that, she comes once a week, the only time I will hoover is if the kitchen is getting too crumby and then I just do a couple of mins. The hoover lives in the kitchen, all plugged in ready to go for such eventualities

She didnt come last week so I did a little bit of hoovering downstairs last night but didnt touch the bit of the sofa that the cat has been living on for weeks where there is an indent with a mass of thick fur. That can stay until she comes next

RampantIvy · 17/12/2023 09:18

I have a Sebo vacuum cleaner that is more powerful than you can buy these days, so my floor gets deep cleaned every time it is vacuumed.

It's quicker for me to sweep the kitchen floor than to get the vacuum cleaner out and set it up.

ScarlettSunset · 17/12/2023 09:20

I generally go for once a week. But I live alone most of the week and don't have any pets. I have friends with dogs who have to vacuum daily.

TeaspoonPocket · 17/12/2023 09:22

I can't believe that the average is more than once a week.

I aim for once a week in the main areas - quick go over on kitchen/hallway/living room rug. The rest of the house is left longer. Weeks, and some rooms can be months.

I can understand why people do it more if they have specific reasons e.g. hairy pets, or loads of kids, or allergies etc. But I also think there are loads of people who do it a lot less than anyone is admitting on here.

DuvetCovers · 17/12/2023 09:23

Twice a week because my cleaner comes twice a week. When she's away I do it once a week.

I think doing the whole house every day is a lot but the thing that really stood out is how anxious it would make you not to do this, op. It's fine to have high standards but if the idea of anything less than perfect makes you feel uncontrollably anxious, that's an issue.

CoatOfArms · 17/12/2023 09:25

Once a week when the cleaner is here.

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 09:25

Its a good point about not being able to buy powerful cleaners these days, my Mieles are over 20 years old, I cant buy the same power these days so am loathe to replace them although they are knocking on a bit

Yes. I have just googled the specifications of my vacuum and the wattage is 1150 watts. The maximum wattage you can buy now is 900 watts.

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 09:33

I think mine are something like 1600 or so, need to check, might be more

I think they say that due to technology, the 900 you can buy now can replicate the higher wattages of old, Im not sure

I think I need to get them both serviced anyway

It takes longer than 10 minutes to vacuum my house. 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (hard floors), landing, stairs, kitchen (hard floor), dining room (hard floor), downstairs loo (hard floor), hall, study and living room.

I don't find it takes long at all. A good cordless vacuum and doing it regularly means it's a quick job. Our house is six storeys as it's build in to a fairly steep riverbank. There are a lot of stairs and hallways, landings etc but it's still a fairly minor task.

Mines a 2000w

Just used it to hoover up some desiccated cat food round her bowl.

AgentJohnson · 17/12/2023 09:57

Before kid, cat and robot, once a week to ten days. Now with all three, daily.

AgentJohnson · 17/12/2023 10:00

I still have a cordless for the sofa, bathroom and toilet but the robot does the heavy lifting.

Octavia64 · 17/12/2023 10:05

Depends how messy the room gets.

The room where the cat litter trays are, most days as they make it messy.

My kids' bedrooms who are at uni - hoover before they get back for the holidays.

I don't have a schedule that I do the whole house on as some parts are used much more than others.

Unless you have small children and pets most people do not need to hoover daily so the average will be less but if you have messy small kids and pets then you need to hoover more regardless of what the average is.

dudsville · 17/12/2023 10:06

I do it most nights but not 7 times a week, when I'm closing up downstairs for the night so dishwasher, counter tops, hob, cleaning the sink and floors = about 10 min.

weegiemum · 17/12/2023 16:06

Cleaners vacuum whole house plus steam mop laminate and kitchen tiles once a week (downstairs is all hard floors). Dog doesn't really shed and it's an all adult house. Sweep up in between plus extra vacuum when Guinea pigs get cleaned out.

MoonlightMemories · 17/12/2023 16:29

A few times a week generally speaking for me - have dry skin and thick, fine hair so both shed quite a lot and helps to keep on top of any crumbs that get dropped in-between hooverings in the kitchen etc.

That's for a small 2 bedroom 1 level flat (a mix of carpet and laminate flooring) and just with a robot vacuum (due to back/fatigue issues I have at times) though. The amount it collects each time never ceased to amaze me!

fussychica · 17/12/2023 16:35

Once or twice a week for us, couple at home, no kids, no pets.

JacquiDaytona · 17/12/2023 16:41

We have a hairy dog so every day, if not twice a day! It looks horrendous if we don’t. But I don’t think that’s normal…

Because the hoover is more effective on carpets, so lives on the carpeted first floor of the house, whereas the ground floor has hard floors. I'm not lugging the hoover up and down staris when I can just use a sweeping brush.

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 20:26

Fair enough. I have two hoovers for that exact reason, they are heavy.

MrsHughesPinny · 17/12/2023 20:35

Once or twice a week, unless there are any spills. Those get spot cleaned as they happen.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 18/12/2023 05:19

Desecratedcoconut · 16/12/2023 23:26

Jesus, if you have to hoist your furniture in the air to hoover it, just leave it be, who's going to know?

Edited

I get heaps of dead woodlice and, thanks to DCat, the occasional dead mouse under the sofas, so moving them to hoover is necessary.
