With the best will in the world I disagree. I'm a TEFL teacher, a latecomer to the profession. I genuinely believe my grasp of spelling and grammar is down to how much I read. I've always been a book worm, my mum says I used to read everything, even newspapers a a kid, this is not anything to do with disparity in educational opportunity. Libraries are free.

This post is rather self-satisfied, especially given the fact that your post has its own grammatical errors. As you teach English as a foreign language, it might be worth looking up how to use commas appropriately in written English.

catsanddogsandrabbits · 13/12/2023 19:10

The real problem is no-one thinks they need to learn anything. Ever!
Tell someone they need to eat better, read more, explain how to cook cheaply, manage money, write better - and you get a tirade of abuse. (Especially if you're a teacher employed to educate). "My rights, you can't tell me, I won't be told, you're discriminating/ shaming/bullying me".
No-one learns. We have a hugely ignorant population and the results are visible everywhere - but people just blame the government.

Commas in all the wrong places over and over again are not typos. And yours was the original 'lovely post'

People just don't read as much as they used to. When I was young, umpty-tum years ago (back in the 60's and 70's actually but that's practically historical now), everyone belonged to a library. Everyone, even those who had problems reading, would have piles of books at home - it was only the speed at which you worked through the books that differentiated us. Everyone read. Nowadays everyone reads, but 90% of what they read appears to be online and subject to the incorrect spelling and grammar of everyone else who's never read a book.

60s and 70s.

MadAboutThat · 13/12/2023 21:07

'On accident' 🤮

HazelBite · 13/12/2023 21:10

The overuse of the word "like" prefixing everything

Ghostgirl77 · 13/12/2023 21:18

I saw “unphased” being used instead of “unfazed” in an actual printed book the other day.

CrispsnDips · 13/12/2023 21:22

Hope YOUR well

CagneyAndLazy · 13/12/2023 21:23

I see that someone already mentioned "alot" and "abit", etc.

Not at all wishing to join a pile-on, but can anyone explain how people come to use those?

You would have to override spellchecker on your phone or computer to type "alot", so is that what people are doing? Do they think "a lot" is incorrect so they force it to accept "alot"?

I've also seen people add apostrophes with plurals in some cases and not others in the same post - even the same sentence, on occasion - which, again, I'd be interested to know what the thinking is there? I wondered if perhaps they are thinking that you need an apostrophe if the word ends with a vowel, or something like that?

It's interesting...

Howlers I've seen in books (by big-name publishers, I might add) include 'His eyes were out on storks' and 'Her hair was quaffed to perfection.'

As I'm a copyeditor this causes me actual pain. 😬

Chocoswirl · 13/12/2023 21:26

Used to drive me utterly round the bend.
But then something switched in my head and now I find it amusing and quite enjoy saying it myself and watching people twitch!
(If only I had of been less swotty in my teen years I could of got this rebellious streak out of my system !)

Inkypot · 13/12/2023 21:29

None of the ones mentioned so far can compete with the worst of the lot...

The smorning.

I shit you not, I've seen it used by several people and it's bizarre!

OMG.

I hadn't heard that one before.

I think I've lost the will to live.

I have seen a few threads lately where teachers have said they like getting stationary for Christmas gifts. I am always tempted to comment but we are a prickly bunch!

Lost your usual punchbag for the night have we?

How these posts end up with people like you picking a fight never ceases to amaze me.

WHY is it so hard for people to get right? (Yes I’m aware the origin is incorrectly hearing ’ve as of).
My new bug bear is his/he's used the wrong way round eg “his off to work at he’s new job”, I’m seeing it all the time now - WTAF.

Of course I meant bugbear, before anyone delights in correcting me.
