Go back 25 years and thickos didn't have the same opportunities to publish/broadcast their ignorance, so it went relatively unnoticed.

Let's not use the word thickos for people with literacy problems (or at all, frankly)

But broadly, yes, I think that the less literate weren't as noticeable until social media came along. As a teacher though, I have seen a significant deterioration in SPAG in many younger colleagues, so there has to be another reason for that.

They do not read books or other printed materials.

Instead, they read each other's posts on SM, along with very poorly captioned reels, etc. They absorb the ubiquitous mistakes and in turn spread the poor spelling and grammar themselves.

I suspect they never had correct contractions drilled into them, or proper use of its and it's, or there, their, and they're, or how to use an apostrophe for the possessive case. But the big problem is lack of reading.

I've recently been seeing a lot of "60's, 70's, 80's" etc. on FB which I am finding increasingly irritating.

I assume it's because people know there's an apostrophe in there and automatically put it before the s (making a plural into a possessive - a very common mistake actually) rather than putting in place of the missing characters. '70s '80s etc.

I've even seen "1980's" though so who knows the reasoning there.

@SoreAndTired1

Time to pressure Education Departments in England to bring proper English back to the curriculum.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on that. Standards of English have slipped and I am sure that much of it is to do with social media - as pps have already noted. However, the word gotten became obsolete in England 300 years ago. It is still used in Canada and America as their language was isolated at that point in time. It is the equivalent of saying "see you on the morrow" instead of using the word tomorrow. Perhaps I should tell the Department of Education to include that as well.

That could be correct though, what was the rest of the phrase?

With the best will in the world I disagree. I'm a TEFL teacher, a latecomer to the profession. I genuinely believe my grasp of spelling and grammar is down to how much I read. I've always been a book worm, my mum says I used to read everything, even newspapers a a kid, this is not anything to do with disparity in educational opportunity. Libraries are free.

Yet your post implies something other than what you imagine.

Google 'comma splice', then please strive to avoid teaching this glaring error in your job as a TEFL teacher.

Another one looking for an argument, what's wrong with you?

I think I write well. I certainly understand spelling and grammar. I often make errors on here though because I type on my phone and it's harder to spot mistakes. I really should use the preview button more but I'm normally in a hurry.

However at work I suffer the indignity of having my well written documents hashed about by someone I suspect really struggled to get GCSE English. It's really painful to see basic grammatical errors inserted.

However, some of the stuff highlighted on here is regional variation and mocking it is, I think a bit insensitive. Oh and outwith is the best word in the world!

Three cheers for outwith 👍👍👍
