That’s a new one to me too, maybe it’ll catch on….🥺🥺🥺🙄

I really hope it doesn't, only seen it once which was once too often

willWillSmithsmith · 13/12/2023 15:28

I’ve noticed that Americans will say ‘Have you spoke to him’ instead of spoken. I even heard an American doctor on tv use the same bad grammar.

birthdayday · 13/12/2023 15:28

Years ago I corrected a colleague. (English is my second language) She looked at me with wide eyes not getting it. She said everybody spells it like that. My conclusion was it's a change in English writing, that is here to stay.

BeadedBubbles · 13/12/2023 15:31

@LakieLady - it was the one where the op was annoyed by someone jumping the queue (2 or 3 times apparently). Nobody else in the queue minded but op did and after she left the store rang up the manager to complain that the shop assistant had allowed this to happen.

The absolute classic example of someone marking themselves as uninformed by criticising something that is correct.

Haitch will never sound ok to me (but I’m guessing you’re Irish and I know it’s the norm there, at least I think it is?). Vivre le Aitch 😁

threecupsofteaminimum · 13/12/2023 15:32

@Anisette

I was the same, I read and read and read in the council houses I grew up in off my own bat with very little encouragement from single parent aside from tabloids her boyfriend used to read. They were no bookshelves stuffed with classical literature. I'm sorry if this isn't what the angry mob want to hear. I'm almost certain it isn't ignorance either.

It's fine not to like it - I don't love Aitch and I dislike Arr for the letter R (which I pronounce Oar). What's not fine is to criticise or correct it.

Not forgetting “can I lend your pen?” 😬

I criticise it in my head but I never say it out loud to someone, although it takes every fibre of my being not to go “aitch, it’s aitch!” So I just quietly grit my teeth and tell myself to get over it and stop being so precious😄 The only people I told (and they stopped) are my kids, there will be no haitches in my house! 🙃

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 13/12/2023 15:19

I‘m all for rounding up those for whom „text“ is a past participle.

“He text me last night“

No. He texted.

Could this not an irregular verb? What’s the etymology that makes you correct? I’m not saying you’re not, just interested as to why you’re sure.

Why would you criticise what's right, even in your head?

beautifullittletree · 13/12/2023 15:12

I suppose all of these things are things that people can control. Intellectual ability isn't.

Maybe

Yes but wilful ignorance isn’t a disability. I never correct people because it’s not appreciated and it doesn’t affect me, more importantly I don’t know their personal circumstances. I wish it was more acceptable to politely correct people but it’s not so I leave it. I do of course correct my own kids, even now as adults.

I can do whatever I like in my head, you probably can too.

I don't mean to be angry, I'm bad at writing tone though so apologies about that. Although I did say I won't be blamed and used a fucking somewhere so that probably came across as anger. It was more frustration really.

I'm gonna step away now though bc when I read stuff like 'oh I managed to read off my own bat' it makes me feel inferior for not doing it, despite the fact I never had the opportunity.

Catza · 13/12/2023 16:22

I am just baffled at how militant people are when one points it. English is not my native language and when people correct me, I am very grateful. Otherwise I would be going through life saying "whether" instead of "whereas" (for some reason my ear didn't pick up the difference until by boyfriend told me at the ripe age of 35).
So all the people who say they didn't learn it at school or have disabilities/social circumstances which prevented you from learning it as a child - why are you upset when the correct way is pointed out. Someone told you so now you know and can use it correctly going forward. Surely that's what life-long learning is all about.

Gotten is correct. Old English usage that fell out of use in some parts of the country but not others.

Zingy123 · 13/12/2023 16:30

I've got someone on my Facebook who doesn't know the difference between his and he's. Only today she has put about her little boy "His not feeling well. His been asleep all day."
