To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

i think i am more annoyed the kids break up from school so late.... i much prefer them to have the later nights so we can have movie nights or do crafts or bake something festive.... school nights are busy as they have after school clubs and then when i get in i cook, tidy the kitchen up read with the littlest one and then its showers and bed pretty much. we enjoy the build up as much if not more than the actual day in our house, so it does feel as if we are missing out 😟

I thought this was a joke! But sadly it's not .

Who are all these people with children that don’t go back until the 8th? We break up on the 22nd and are back on the 4th.

Here!! 👋. Mine break up the 21st as 22nd is a teacher day so teachers still in school. Then they go back 8th Jan. North East.

As a teacher I’m glad I’m part time. If I was full time I’d have zero decent shopping days after finishing on the Friday to go shopping. Probably getting my food shopping in the Friday although that wool still be bedlam as the kids are all off. Still trying to find a child free day to go and get some Christmas presents before we all break up.

Kids weren’t happy as they’ve asked when we can go to a few of the venues we visit for Christmas themed events and we don’t actually have any time this year. We normally do those on the days after they break up.

They still have two weeks off, just do those things after Christmas day?

It's not the same at all. No good doing the 'building up to Christmas' stuff when Christmas is over.

My ds breaks up on the 20th and goes back on the 4th. I break up on the 22nd and go back on the 8th.

I'm with @MRSsqueak
Really missing the chance to do that this year.
Not really up for Christmas crafts in the week of New Year but will have to just put on a brave face and see what unfolds. But the build up isn't happening because the kids are too tired. Hey ho.

Movies and festive crafts and baking are just Christmas things to me, we would do these things over the whole Christmas break.

Pipistrellus · 12/12/2023 18:57

Christmas lasts 12 days, or at least until Christmas break is over. It's not just a day.

Looking at it, I think this is more the reason I'm annoyed then Christmas being on a Monday.

I think it's how late the children break up, hence why I have to take leave on those weeks, unless I leave the toddler home alone, so doesn't seem enough time to do the Christmas events on the lead up.

I know it's irrational. It's never bothered me it being on a Monday before, probably because I used to work Christmas day before DD was born, but this year I'm really annoyed.

I thinks it's because I won't have time after pay day to get last minute gifts so will have to try to squeeze them all in this pay.

If you hadn't noticed it's on the same day every year so why would this make a difference to pay day!?!

It depends how your payroll works. If your normal payday is on or around the 25th, it's usually moved.

FirstTimeTTC989 · 12/12/2023 19:06

I actually love it as it means I get a long weekend!! I can't take time off before Christmas and the in between the days as our work is busiest in December but they do give us the bank holidays so it's a 4 day weekend for me! Hurray!

maddening · 12/12/2023 19:09

I think it's perfect, get the Saturday off and no fighting for Xmas eve off, I have booked off the 27th so only 2 days in before the new year.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 12/12/2023 19:16

Is it a full moon tonight? HAS EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM GONE INSANE?

Christmas is on a Monday, but you’ll manage. A 23 year old making other plans for the big day IS normal. It isn’t right to cry that your kid didn’t get a birthday card from another child. No one gives a shit about your anniversary.

This place is fucking nutso tonight.

Absolutely - but that is the same every year which is why I don't get the comment relative to being a Monday!

Pipistrellus · 12/12/2023 19:28

I don't get how the day Christmas is on or where it falls in the school Christmas break really matters.

In my house there must be presents on the 25th, non negotiable with a four year old, but we do Christmas things on any day in Christmas break. It doesn't have to be over until you want it to be over. The late school break up means you only have weekends before Christmas to go to organised events, but that's the only real issue to me.

Also add in the poster who is fuming that acquaintances aren’t writing her long missives in Christmas cards.

TickyTacky · 12/12/2023 19:31

Thankfully our schools break up on the 15th, otherwise I'd be feeling as upset as you are. That bit before Christmas does feel special - and while I'm totally sure you'll be able to enjoy it still, it is nicer not to be doing school runs right up until the day basically.

Tessabelle74 · 12/12/2023 19:36

I got the humour in this post, I think many didn't! Yes it's bloody rude it's on a Monday 😂

User2856948 · 12/12/2023 19:41

Thankfully I'm retired so don't have to worry my head too much about this but it's handy DS is coming down on Saturday instead of Christmas Eve with it being on a Monday

Going insane? You're the one doing the shouty capitals! I don't think anyone is saying they aren't going to manage. It's just annoying to have most of your time off after Christmas instead of before, so you have less time to prepare. We always used to break up around the 15th.

FreshWinterMorning · 12/12/2023 19:42
