To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

Hilarious thread. So many nuts people out and about today.

Unless I've missed something, there is no rule which says you have to do Christmas on 25 December. It's just a random day picked by grumpy men centuries ago. If it does not suit you, move it. We frequently have our family get together on a different day in either December or January. I'm not prepared to have my social life organised by the Christian calendar.

But I'm loving the thread, DS who is visiting was asking why I'm chuckling at my phone.

Changing the subject slightly. Your son has come to visit you, and you are on your phone scrolling through mumsnet?! Confused

Bit rude.

FourChimneys · 12/12/2023 20:04

Someone I spoke to today is finishing at 8.30 pm on Christmas Eve, on call on Christmas Day, starting at 7.30 am on Boxing Day.

A old family friend was lifeboat crew and had at least two Christmas Day shouts in his time.

We don't all get a cosy fortnight.

Can you explain the humour?

I'm pretty sure the OP has tongue firmly in cheek and appreciates you can't change the day of Christmas day falls on. It is mildly annoying for the reasons she states though, mainly the kids break up earlier normally, and I save myself an hour a day in school runs, Christmas day on a Monday means they break up on the Wednesday before rather than the Monday had it fallen in the weekend. She's not seriously expecting it to be changed, therefore it's a light hearted post

FreshWinterMorning thank you for your concern. He is visiting because he is working in the area for two days. He has eaten with us, had a good chinwag and is now on the other sofa doing work admin on his laptop.

Is that OK with you?

Bit rude to chime in to randomly have a go at someone.

Who breaks up on the 15th?! No-one I know!

I know. 10 days before Christmas? The schools don’t break up that early. And even if they did, what’s all this ‘we’ business?

I think what’s really behind the few complainers on this thread is that they are the ‘start Christmas on 1st December and finish it at bedtime on the 25th, if not sooner’ brigade. Christmas needs moving back to where it used to be. From that point of view, the timing of the holidays for many schools this year is perfect.

bananamangoes · 12/12/2023 20:47

Makes not much difference whenever it falls. the days off are usually the same

isittheholidaysyet · 12/12/2023 20:54

It's great this year.
Mine breaks up on 21st.
So just time to tidy and put decorations up before Christmas starts.

No spending a week of our holiday still in Advent mode, unable to eat the Christmas food or celebrate properly.

And what's even better is that the hols go on to the 8th. So we can celebrate the whole of Christmas during holiday time, rather than having to spend some of Christmas in school!

JTtheee · 12/12/2023 21:19

To be fair. I’m pretty sure that’s why they put Christmas in December in the first place!! 🤣

I don’t see any humour in the OP, she doesn’t make any references to wanting to change the day Christmas falls on in her OP, hence she got serious responses.

The only one to add humour was a pp who suggested OP start an online petition to move Christmas Day and contact the minister of important things.

Your lucky op, I am a nurse. I finish work 23rd, and back again Boxing day. Im just happy to have Xmas day off, because the last few years I have worked them. You can still do christmassey things in the run up, like I do.

Saturdayrabbit42 · 12/12/2023 22:13

Erm doctors/nurses etc are lucky to get a day or two off over the Christmas period!!! “Breaking up” isn’t an option for us all!

gemma19846 · 12/12/2023 22:29

Alot of people are working Saturday, Sunday AND/or xmas day! Poor you!

Vonesk · 12/12/2023 23:45

You are not being unreasonable, what you have highlighted is that certain people in families ' provide ' Christmas for others ; they COOK, GET GIFTS, DECORATE THE HOUSE, MAKE ARRANGEMENTS ,GET EVERYTHING ORGANISED and In. This process lose themselves in looking after others, it's just all sheer hard work!!!!!!!!!

Flopsyj · 13/12/2023 03:41

As someone who used to work Christmas Day you should know that finishing work on Friday makes you bloody lucky! Many are working right up to or on Christmas, including those with children. Completely unreasonable to moan when you have time off

Littlemissnikib · 13/12/2023 06:35

I blame the parents!!! 😂😂😂😂

VeronicasCloset · 13/12/2023 06:45

Oh gosh all the holier than thou ‘be grateful you aren’t working Christmas’ brigade have been set off.
Why should she be grateful not to be working outside her contracted hours? That’s her career choice.

Merridy82 · 13/12/2023 06:48

Every time you feel a little irked by this terrible scenario, maybe imagine spending that time in Ukraine/Palestine?

Beachwaves127 · 13/12/2023 06:58

I think it’s great. Most people work Xmas eve usually!

Because she is now moaning about the time off she gets within her career choice! Seems 2 weeks off over Xmas isn’t good enough because Xmas day falls on a Monday! Boohoo!

NeonSoda · 13/12/2023 07:07

Isn’t it the other way round?

Normally I’d finish work on Christmas Eve at 5pm and then the next day it’s Christmas Day.

This year most people won’t be at work the two days before Christmas.

LNEAX · 13/12/2023 07:14

YANBU my daughter breaks up on the Friday before too, and then doesn’t go back until the 8th? So hard to get any time off in January, and we too love the run up to Christmas (I agree the days after Christmas Day feels a bit meh!)
