To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

I have worked christmas eve for years and now work christmas day etc. I'm not allowed to book annual leave from mid December to mid January as there is too much sick leave taken. You are acting like a spoilt brat. Book annual leave if its that important. I suspect you work in education sector for this to even be a thing.

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/12/2023 08:56

YABU but only because a Tuesday would be much worse.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/12/2023 08:58

If you close your eyes and wish really hard maybe it will be on a different day next year

Or you could think yourself lucky that you get so much time off. My sister finishes at 4pm on Christmas day, between her, her DP and DC they are unlikely to have a single day when they are all off work together. Plenty of people would love to break up when you do.

KitchenSinkLlama · 12/12/2023 09:06

I blame the Babylonians.

nutsnutspistachionuts · 12/12/2023 09:09

Our school holidays are 15th - 3rd, which is perfect I think.

Is everyone who breaks up on 22nd having the first week in January off? Nightmare.

teraculum29 · 12/12/2023 09:30

OP try to work in healthcare, no Christmas off and you are not allowed to take annual leave.

And I am paid on every last day of the month, so I will be paid after Christmas.

TerroristToddler · 12/12/2023 09:31

I'm quite chuffed its on a Monday as it means I have Sat and Sun to prepare for once! We aren't generally able to take any A/L over the xmas break so its just the bank holidays/weekends for me (sometimes can take 1 A/L day depending on caseload at the time, but never know if its possible until literally the day so can't prepare in advance for this!).

I'm often working usual hours on xmas eve, then rushing home to try and make it magical for the kids and prepare for the next few days. Then back to work day after boxing day (if its not a weekend day)!

I've got so much A/L left to take before end of FY too....it's a crappy system and I'd genuinely love to know that I was 'breaking up' for a 2wk break over xmas soon where I could cosy up with the family and just be a bit lazy for a while. Being in and out of work over the xmas period really takes the shine off the entire thing!

I have two weeks off over christmas so finish on Friday then have WC 25th off and WC 4th off.

I love the run up to Christmas, but hate the time inbetween Christmas and New year.

Think yourself very lucky then!! I'm working the whole weekend before Christmas Day and back in the following weekend. Think of all the people having to work over Christmas week itself.

TurquoiseThings · 12/12/2023 09:56

Also, where I work we're not allowed to take annual leave over Christmas and new year as it's our busiest period.

Your whole point is based on being lucky enough to normally finish the Friday before Christmas, even if Christmas is on, say, a Thursday. Hordes of people are nowhere near that lucky, and even leaving aside people who have to work over Christmas itself, have to work right up to Christmas Eve. Which is a normal working day.

Did you not think about that before posting? Bizarre.

littlebopeepp234 · 12/12/2023 10:11

Yup think about those who have to work Xmas day. I really cannot believe someone is moaning about what day Christmas Day falls on when they have a whole 2 weeks off! Most people aren’t that lucky!

Hayliebells · 11/12/2023 19:22

I don't understand how your pay is affected? Don't you get paid on the same day every month, so you're always paid the same number of days before Xmas?

I doubt it is affected. OP’s thinking of new stuff to say now they’ve had their arse quite rightly handed to them.

Brefugee · 12/12/2023 10:18

VanityDiesHard · 11/12/2023 18:45

I love it being on Monday. It is more annoying when it's a weekend because all the days off in lieu means nothing opens for ages.

or you live/work in a country where there are no days of in lieu and you just get a nearly normal weekend and that's it (if Christmas Day is Saturday)

sashh · 12/12/2023 10:59

Orthodox Xmas is on the 7th of Jan, that's a Sunday - do that instead.

The calendar we use was adopted in the UK in 1752 or 1753 (cannot recall which). So you have had plenty of warning.

Ah, the missing 11 days!!! Can we have them back?

My son used to work for a brewery. Christmas is a busy time. One either got Christmas or New Year, never both and sometimes be on call, as well. OP gets a whole two weeks. Most of us get two days and shop assistants often only get one, and finish late on Christmas Eve to boot!

Panda89 · 12/12/2023 13:37

It’s ideal for me being on a Monday as I then get 4 days off!
if you want more time off before Xmas, can you not just start your 2 weeks AL a bit earlier?

Yes, I worked in retail for years and usually got Xmas day only with massive boxing day sale meaning in work at 5am to open doors at 6am (some people would be queueing before then!).
Xmas day is barely a break at all, or actually more work than usual for sooo many people in various roles.

NaughtybutNice77 · 12/12/2023 13:46

YABU ....but at least you know it. Working till Friday, then Xmas on Monday is hardly bam, straight into it, it's 2 whole days! Never mind, it's Wednesday next year because of the leap year so you'll have 4 days to ease yourself into it.

tachetastic · 12/12/2023 13:51

Some schools are breaking up very late this year. Not DD's school, sadly. They broke up last Friday and she's bored already! 🙄

Still, only three days until my other kids break up and then the arguing over the remote control can begin!!! 😂

10HailMarys · 12/12/2023 14:41

Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas

It’s equally ‘normal’ for Christmas to be on any day of the week. It falls on a Monday just as often as it falls on any other day.

Also, what do you mean by ‘break up’ on a Friday? Unless you are a teacher (or a child, which frankly would explain a lot) you don’t ’break up’ for Christmas; you just take annual leave when you want the time off. You could ‘break up’ on Wednesday if you’d booked Thursday and Friday off.

You’ve got 2 weeks off, which is a lot. Not sure why you’re so annoyed?

If money is an issue, buy less, buy cheaper or buy on overdraft.

Yep - take it to the highest level!

Horsemum40 · 12/12/2023 17:59

What did you want them to do, change Christmas day??? Not like you didn't have any advance notice it was on a Monday this year!! 😂😂
