To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

Being retired, I don't personally care what day it's on, but I still enjoy the Christmas season. Two weeks to go and I've already scoffed a good-sized ham and a Christmas pudding.

Personally I find it really annoying when Christmas is on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday.

Anybody got other preferences???

Wednesday is the worst for me. I only get Christmas and boxing day off. Having to come back to work on the 27th when it's a Friday is annoying.

Bananaman123 · 11/12/2023 21:59

Welcome to being an adult, my idiot employer makes us work a full day Christmas Eve (back office work so not a requirement to service customers). We get Christmas Day and Boxing Day then back to work and only 1 Jan holiday, utter pish.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 11/12/2023 21:59

I love it, because it means new years day is also a monday, so midnight, january 1st is a new day, week, month and year, which meand my brain has no excuse what so ever to argue about me starting my new diet, excersise schedule, etc

GirlOfTudor · 11/12/2023 22:01

I'm confused by your terminology. You say you "break up for Christmas" which suggests you work in education, but then you said you work in healthcare.

You said you've had to use your annual leave leave to cover the Christmas break (which everyone does btw)... So why couldn't you book an extra few days to feel more prepared and festive?

Regarding your childcare being closed over the Christmas break, how old is your child? My son's childcare is only closed on bank holidays (so only 25th, 26th and 1st Jan). Is your childcare not an all year round provider? Unless your child is school aged, it seems odd you'd choose a provider that doesn't open all year round considering your industry.

Pipistrellus · 11/12/2023 22:04

Could the child's other parent not take leave to cover the second week of Christmas break? Then you could take some time off in advent if you need it?

All of this....

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 11/12/2023 22:25

Lol. You are cross about the way that days work?

Shopper727 · 11/12/2023 22:27

But you have 2 full weeks off to enjoy the festive period just be happy about that, enjoy time with family and friends. I spent years working Christmas and this year I’m off but then back to work on the Thursday I would LOVE 2 weeks off over Christmas and new year. (Nurse) so it’s not going to happen.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 11/12/2023 22:29

I've got Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and boxing day off this year, luxury! No one in our place gets 2 weeks off over Christmas.

And can you be unreasonable if you acknowledge it's irrational?!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 11/12/2023 21:15

Schools here don’t break up until 22nd and go back on the 8th.

We break up on the 20th and go back on the 9th!

x2boys · 11/12/2023 22:36

Blame Brexit...

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/12/2023 22:49

I'm just hacked off that we break up so late. I'd much rather have more time off before Christmas than after. I realise I'm fortunate to be off from 22nd Dec to 8th Jan though.

I'm psyching myself up. Veterinary emergency/out of hours role. all the day practices shut for 4 days whilst we cover, and two regular deliveries skipped so stock ordering is nightmare.

Keep doggies out of the chocolates and raisins folks pretty please😊❤️

Merry Christmas though xx

having had to use an emergency vet at Christmas for a very poorly kitten - thank you!!!!

said kitten (well big cat now) is snoring peacefully beside me thanks to a lovely vet lady Boxing Day 🥰

Mindovermatter247 · 11/12/2023 22:55

I’m happy because last year meant I only got 2 days off. As had to work Christmas Eve. as I don’t work Sundays, this year I have 3 days off in a row as I never work Boxing Day.

alltoomuchrightnow · 12/12/2023 01:45

yabu, I get just the 24th and 25th off. Most years it's been just the 25th.

alltoomuchrightnow · 12/12/2023 01:46

Oh..and Boxing Day is the same rate of pay too (min wage)

JamieKnows · 12/12/2023 01:50

"I feel robbed of it this year. Hate the time inbetween Christmas day and new year as have no routine, no idea what day it is and basically just go to pot."

Confused well maybe grow up and plan stuff for those days. You're not at work after all and presumably an adult

Pipistrellus · 12/12/2023 07:20

I don't understand feeling robbed of time just because you have the week after rather than the week before off. Christmas markets are over but pantos typically go through to January and non commercial Christmas activities can be done anytime in the season. It's not all over on boxing day.

Melodysmum12 · 12/12/2023 07:26

Yes but I work in the NHS. I do not have two whole weeks off! Plus having a child I need to ration it!

Shocked that someone with two weeks off over Xmas can complain!

Dontcallmescarface · 12/12/2023 07:52

I think it's great. I get 2 have 4 days off instead of 2. Wednesday is the worst day to have Christmas as far as I'm concerned.

jemenfous37 · 12/12/2023 07:54

Call the calendar police!
This is an outrage!
How dare 'they' let Christmas day happen on a Monday?
Can you not try online shopping?

LlynTegid · 12/12/2023 08:19

The calendar we use was adopted in the UK in 1752 or 1753 (cannot recall which). So you have had plenty of warning.

Alondra · 12/12/2023 08:28

I love it on a Monday. I finish work early on Friday, get the house ready on Saturday and on Sunday I go early (5am) to the Sydney Fish Markets to get the seafood I want. Back home by 7am to catch up on a few hours sleep before we start making preparations for Christmas Eve Dinner (the important family day in the holidays for Spaniards).

Most of my grocery shopping is already done. I just need the fresh seafood.
