She's just a waitress!

Am in restaurant attached to premier inn

That's what the man on table next to me, has just said to his (presumably) wife

She's just a waitress

WTAF! She's just spent ages going through the menu with them

I'm probably overreacting??? It's nothing to do with me but I feel really annoyed and want to say something

I'm sat here fuming. She's been lovely, I'm here alone and she's really looked after me

ah but she might be between jobs
a writer in her spare time

theduchessofspork · 10/12/2023 20:32

Just tell him that being a waitress is a valuable job, no one is ‘just’ an anything, there is no such thing as an unskilled job etc.

There’s nothing like a bit of Merlot fuelled getting on your high horse (I mean that)

Comedycook · 10/12/2023 20:32

Well what was the context in what he said...for example...if his wife said "let's ask her to valet our car/clean our room/check us out of room/call us a taxi?" and he said she's just a waitress, that's not so bad.

Notimeforaname · 10/12/2023 20:32

She doesn't need to be anything other than a waitress to be worth something. Shes as valuable as anyone else.

Lemondrizzleicecream · 10/12/2023 20:34

it's like the beginning of Reservoir Dogs..... He sounds like Mr Pink

beautifullittletree · 10/12/2023 20:34

No context here?

Bigcoatweather · 10/12/2023 20:35

Yes, context is everything here. If they need to know in detail about ingredients due to an intolerance or allergy, they may need a more informed person eg. ask a chef.

Does Sauvignon Blanc count?

I really want to say something snide, but just as I'm leaving, obviously

I actually don't know for sure, I just had a sense that his wife said something about something on the menu and that was his response

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/12/2023 20:35

In what context was it said? It could have been a legit thing to say if for example they wanted to ask about luggage storage and the point the husband was making was that they would be better off asking the front desk because ‘she’s just a waitress’ and not working on the hotel side. But yeah just said on its own like that it sounds properly twatty.

theduchessofspork · 10/12/2023 20:35

Also, while I am assuming you’re travelling for work, if he’s eating with his wife/partner/mistress in a prem inn, they are a pair of saddos. You might loose the high ground if you add that though.

Tilllly · 10/12/2023 20:36

He sounded snide
It sounded like a putdown

Though I have to admit, I don't know for sure. But I have decided he looks "the type"

I haven't seen reservoir dogs though

Maybe the wife wanted to complain about something they ordered or wasn't on the menu and that was his response.

Actually that’s a fair point.

How twattish does he look OP?

Yes The Great White (as a friend of mine’s husband calls Sauv B when it puts her into fighting form) definitely counts.

😂😂

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 10/12/2023 20:38

She could have wanted to moan about the fact that the food comes pre-made or she doesn't like the fact that the menu displays calories or something....and he has told her not to bother as she is just a waitress...ie don't complain to her as the corporate policy is not her fault at all

theduchessofspork · 10/12/2023 20:39

Go for it then.

If he doesn’t deserve a dressing down for this, he’s bound to for something.

Or could be allergy related?? She’s ‘just a waitress’ so they want reassurance from the manager that the chef uses a separate fryer for gluten because one of them is celiac… You’re probably right and the husband is a condescending idiot, but on the off chance you’re wrong, and because confronting strangers is rarely worth it, don’t say anything.

I can tell you’re sober

MrsMarzetti · 10/12/2023 20:41

Tilllly You are a better person than me, i would have to ask his wife why she was married to such a twat.

allmyliesaretrue · 10/12/2023 20:41

Well if he's having dinner in a Premier Inn then he hardly a fan of fine dining himself, is he?!!

Tilllly · 10/12/2023 20:43

Well, it's a beefeater attached to a Premier Inn, so almost classy

I've actually had a really nice meal

Though I am sat, eavesdropping on their conversation, and deciding that every single thing he says is horrific
I don't know who Penelope is, but he doesn't like her. Penelope, think she is better than him

You’re missing the context, soI think you’re in danger of looking quite foolish.
If he is a knob then I’m sure his friends and family are already aware, without your input. Just keep being you and leave a decent tip, there’s nothing more you can do.

Some nasty people on this thread.

A comment overheard, totally without context. But of course, the busybodies know best

Tilllly · 10/12/2023 20:45

I've just had this awful image of coming on MN later tonight and somebody saying, I was trying to have a nice meal with my husband and this woman on the table next to us was giving us daggers drawn and gave us a go full over nothing
At which point I'll say, ooh poor you, silly cow
