I've narrowed it down to The Only living Boy in New York by Simon and Garfunkel ( I'm obsessed with the weather forecast, only news I need)
And Raise Hell by Brandi Carlisle. Also something by Magnetic fields....Andrew in Drag probably not appropriate though...

Right now:

Island - John Power
Sleeping Soul - John Power
Winter Academy - Billy MacKenzrie
Nocturne VII - Billy MacKenzie

Oh, John Power's voice, absolutely yes. Love him and Cast and saw them in concert in August.
This has just reminded me that I would probably want Walkaway at my funeral.

Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush as probably the first song I was really captivated by & the strings at the end are lovely, might have that as everyone's filing out.
Goodbye to Love by The Carpenters, beautiful words & guitar solo.

Tom Waits - Come on up to the House.

'Come down off the cross, we could use the wood, you gotta come on up to the house's.

My MIL chose a song by Elbow for her funeral and we find it impossible to hear without remembering that was time.
I would like Dido's lament (When I am laid in earth), but I know my family would hate it and find it incredibly sad, so maybe I will have to choose something else.

What is this living funeral you speak of....??

Hello fellow Irish MNer 👋🏻

Living funeral is where you haven't popped it yet but you know it's kinda sooner rather than later.

Dementia runs in my family, I have a few risk factors. I don't want to exist for yonks with no memory or knowledge of who I am, who my kids are... If I'm not me, I'm not there. So I've decided that if that's what life has in store for me, at the first signs of it I'm having a living funeral, ye can all tell me how wonderful I am while I'm around to hear it and then I'll go out on my own terms after that.

But I'll have a feckin fab party before I go.

Indeed, my favourite living singer.

"Sleeping soul, sleeping soul,
Take my hand, keep tight hold
You are never on your own,
You are never on your own.."

Just beautiful.

(I was at Scarborough Spa, it was electric!)

VickyEadieofThigh · 10/12/2023 14:04

None. It's in my will that I don't want a funeral. Same for my partner.

Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers
And
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead from The Wizard of Oz, just for a laugh

LlynTegid · 10/12/2023 14:48

It will probably surprise none of you that I want a Welsh hymn at my funeral. Given the limited number of people likely to outlive me who can speak Welsh, sadly that rules out Calon Lan.

I'd be happy with Guide Me O Thou Great Reedemer.

Utterbunkum · 10/12/2023 14:51

The Boatman - levellers
Strange Little Girl - Stranglers
For a Few Dollars More - Lee Scratch Perry & The Upsetters

Aretha franklin say a little prayer.
Not particularly religious but
I loved that song as a child.

My mum loved that, so we had it at her funeral.

I can't remember what we had at my dad's funeral, but she used to tease him that she was having the hymn "Glad that I live am I" and the gospel song, "O Happy Day" played when he went!

I'm having a direct cremation, so no need for any of it. But if I wasn't, I'd have this:

It was one of mine and my late DP's favourite songs, and we had it played at his funeral. I can't listen to it now, it makes me too sad.

Entrance of the Queen of Sheba.

As a 9 year old I remember my great nan saying to my Nan about me "who does she think she is, the Queen of sheba?" So I want to answer finally with yep. Yep I do.

I want a traditional funeral in church. Hymns should include “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace“. I also want “Don’t You (forget about me)“ by Simple Minds playing as people leave the church.
