I've narrowed it down to The Only living Boy in New York by Simon and Garfunkel ( I'm obsessed with the weather forecast, only news I need)
And Raise Hell by Brandi Carlisle. Also something by Magnetic fields....Andrew in Drag probably not appropriate though...

I chose 3 pieces that meant something to me and/or late DH.

2 classical, & the "exit music" was a German Oompah band that I detested !

A close friend had "Bat out of Hell"

I want Bat Out of Hell. I also want something by Bruce Springsteen although I can't decide what, Clare Island by the Saw Doctors and Fairytale of New York. DH said I'll need a double slot at the crem just for the music!

AcrossthePond55 · 10/12/2023 18:09

I believe songs are a way of communicating our love and wishes to those we leave behind.

For my sons; A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes and When You Wish Upon a Star (both Disney songs). Songs that I hope would encourage them to dream and follow those dreams.

For Friends & Family: In My Life (The Beatles). The lyrics make it pretty self explanatory.

For my Husband: God Bless the Broken Road (Rascal Flatts) because we found our true love in each other after kissing a few toads/toadesses.

And just because I love Bluegrass: Reunion in Heaven (The Primitive Quartet)

But, since DH and I have both decide we don't want funerals, our loved ones can play their favourite party music, rock on, and share good memories and good times.

  1. A Bird In The Thyme - Tiny Ruins
  2. Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
  3. Teo Torriate - Queen

None. It's in my will that I don't want a funeral. Same for my partner.

In your will is too late, IME wills aren’t usually dealt with until after the funeral.

Sunshine on Leith - Proclaimers

I’m not Scottish, I live at the other end of the UK. But I think it’s the only song that’ll be needed 👍

I also heard this on the radio one day and it made me sob and I have no idea why. I'm not Scottish either but It is also now on my funeral play list

BIossomtoes · 10/12/2023 19:18

Sunshine on Leith is beautiful.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 10/12/2023 19:20

Whatever whoever is organising it wants- it's not for me, after all. If anybody wants a recommendation from the woman of hour though, I'd go with 'Club Tropicana', as it it my sincere hope that where we are all going, the drinks truly will be free.

WellingtonBoot · 10/12/2023 19:35

I play the organ at several village churches when I'm back in the UK.
People often request a stirring and/or emotional piece for the outgoing processional and the one that really made me smile was the request for the Theme from Chariots of Fire !

Fairport Covention - Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Barbara Dickson - Caravan Song

Fairport Covention - Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Barbara Dickson - Caravan Song

I LOVE that FC song.

tarheelbaby · 26/06/2024 17:33

At my husband's aunt's funeral in a crematorium during COVID, they played the Fairport Convention song. She was a big fan.

My husband's funeral was a traditional C of E one in our village church.
His organist friend kindly played and chose:

  • Rhosymedre (Vaughan Williams) (played at Diana's funeral)
  • Prière à Notre-Dame (Boëllmann, from Suite Gothique Op.25)
  • Largo (Peeters Op.71, No. 2)
  • Panis Angelicus (Franck)
  • Vater unser im Himmelreich (Buxtehude, BuxWV 219)
  • Gelobet sei'st du, Jesu Christ (JS Bach, BWV 604)

and I requested

  • Thou knowest, Lord (Purcell)

Musical reflection (Voluntary) mid service

  • JS Bach Concerto for two violins, 2nd Movement (Flute/Violin/Piano arrangement)
he suggested but we didn't go with
  • Ave Maria (Schubert, Bach, or Caccini) - One of three alternative versions...

Hymns were:
Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven (from our wedding)
The King of Love (Dominus me regit) = psalm 23
Lord of all hopefulness (DH was an amazing craftsman; his strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe)

We went out to the graveside to:
Bells by Jean Langlais (my husband was an eminent bell ringer)
After the burial of his casket and before the service, his high-powered bell ringing friends rang and rang and rang the bells of our village church. My DH had recently overseen their repair and refurbishment.
For a funeral, they all had a grand time and the only real sadness is that my DH wasn't there to enjoy seeing all his friends and ringing with them.

Every feeling- Ezra Furman

TheSerenePinkOrca · 26/06/2024 17:43

I am hoping for Chesney Hawkes "the one and only" so everyone laughs!

shellyleppard · 09/12/2023 19:52

Queen days of our lives
Somewhere over the rainbow 🌈 by that Hawaiian dude (can't remember his name)
And the final song.....switch 625 by def Leppard. That will make everyone jump;!!
Hymns all things bright and beautiful and Jerusalem

Oh my God, Switch 625 is one of my favourite pieces of music

shellyleppard · 26/06/2024 20:00

@hollowvoice it's definitely one of their best underrated songs 💕

Uricon2 · 26/06/2024 20:07

2 hymns, Cwm Rhondda and Jesu Lover of My Soul

The Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der Lydischen Tonart. (Movement III of one of Beethoven's late Quartets, the 132) The most lovely thing I've ever heard.

Both Ends Burning by my beloved Roxy.

Tracker1234 · 26/06/2024 20:08

Have been to a few funerals recently and I find the classics are the best.

Moonriver Andy Williams was wonderful and Nimerod The Hunter is good for a man. I also heard this one..

“Hello It’s Me” by Todd Rundgren

It was lovely. I know it was Mr Big’s funeral song in Sex in the City but it played out very well in the funeral I attended.

Elphame · 26/06/2024 20:20

Can't really decide

Probably "Heartbeat of the Earth" by Inkubus Sukkubus and of course Calon Lan

RobertaFirmino · 26/06/2024 20:22

Fairport Covention - Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Barbara Dickson - Caravan Song

We chose WKWTTG for my brother's funeral. Really, really lovely.

I would like Cristina's version of 'Is That All There Is?'.

1/ Entrance 9 million bicycles in Bejing (The song I walked down the ailse to, to my late husband)

It was also played at my husband celebration of life service (Katie Malleu)

The choice is because I will be joining my husband again on that final journey

2/ Your beautiful (Phil Wickham) A contemporary Christian song with words of deep meaning

3/ Fields of gold (Eva Cassidy) also played at my late husband and I wedding as the final song

This made me well up! So beautifully thought out and poignant.
I'm sorry for the loss of your husband.

I would prefer not to have a funeral at all. But if my relatives insist, then obviously it has to be the song 'Isn't It Grand to be Bloody Well Dead'.

A friend of mine had that!

Gowlbag · 26/06/2024 20:32

On holiday with the family last year we ended up at a karaoke night. I knew my daughter in law had a nice voice but I’d never heard her sing properly. Well she sang Songbird by Fleetwood Mac and I absolutely bawled crying, it was so beautiful. I’ve asked her to sing it at my funeral. She was a bit 🤨 but she didn’t say no.

daliesque · 26/06/2024 20:34

Bat out of hell and firestarter. Coming in I want Widor's Toccata.

I also want everyone in full on goth and 100 bats 🦇 released.

I might have thought about this too much 🤔
