Adults who don't dress properly for winter

Driving me mad.
I work in an office where must people have a commute or a decent walk to get to work . I'd say about 90% can't dress themselves properly.
Young woman next to me ankle trainer socks. Midriff showing. Pissing and moaning about being cold. It's 1 degree outside and it's December.
It's raining and they come in wearing canvas shoes and a fluffy coat. No umbrella or waterproofs. Then expect to have the heating on full whack all day to dry their coats and shoes out.
In a training room all day where the lead trainer (middle aged, old enough to know better) insisted on having the heating cranked up all day because she's wearing a thin acrylic jumper and got cold to the bones on the way to work and can't warm up.
Everyone without exception has access to the weather forecast via their phones. It shouldn't be a shock when it's raining or cold. Yet they dress like it's May, all year round.
They earn decent money and aren't hard up so it's not a financial issue (maybe with some of the VERY junior/ young ones fair enough )

AIBU to fed up of people moaning about being cold or wet but making zero attempt to dress appropriately for the weather ?

It's a perfectly normal long sleeved stretch cotton top. I wouldn't wear a scoop neck or similar top in the winter as I get cold if my neck is exposed.

But the neckline of the tee must be well above the neckline of the jumper? And couldn’t accidentally touch skin when moving?

Even holding it makes my hands itch. .

lljkk · 07/12/2023 18:46

Can't you just whack some headphones on & ignore their inane complaints?

We had no heating in the office for a couple of weeks (just fixed Tuesday this week). Much muttering and people in big coats to do any work, understandably.

Yeah, not that extreme. Not in continuous contact as in resting against my skin I meant. If I wear a collared shirt it would never touch my wrists or neck even when moving.

What’s wrong with ‘being cosseted in an overheated home?’

Why is it morally wrong? My home is a cosseting temperature. I like it line that and can afford it. Why would l choose to sit in 17 degrees..

You can't think why it would be morally wrong to heat your home to an excessive temperature? You might want to google "how does wasting energy affect the environment" then.

albertselephants · 07/12/2023 19:10

I love the idea that what I wear might offend people 😂

I live in dresses, irrelevant of the weather. I no longer own a jumper or a coat. Nor do I own socks or any shoes that aren't slip on!

However, I almost never get cold and if I was sat in a 22 degree office I'd be wanting a fan on. I have sensory issues and hate having my feet covered so I am barefoot as much as possible.

Don't you ever go for a walk in the countryside or to a park in the autumn or winter?

Morally? It's contributing to climate change if you choose overheating and being cosseted rather than put a jumper on.

Do you just go barefoot if you are somewhere muddy? Or do you have slip on boots?

I agree @ArseInTheCoOpWindow. I rather like ‘being cosseted in an overheated home’ and while I cab afford to do it I will.

And it’s all very well to say that cotton is hopeless but what should be wearing? I can’t bear wool, it’s horrible scratchy stuff so that’s a a definite no.

Don't wear wool next to the skin, and all wool is not equal. Merino, cashmere, alpaca.......you can't be averse to them all.

Natsku · 07/12/2023 19:34

I tried merino wool leggings once and it felt horrid on my skin but it was from Lidl so perhaps it wasn't the best quality. I can only bear cotton on my skin so wear cotton long johns and vests under my clothes in winter. I did buy some thermal leggings which are incredibly warm but I couldn't bear the feeling of them (polyester) and the smell (smells like burning when they rub against my skin)

I've always dressed properly for the cold as an adult though, even in my 20s. Long johns, long sleeve shirts, windproof waterproof over-trousers, warm boots (thermal wellies - look ridiculous but they're good), warm jacket, buff and neck warmer or scarf, woolly hat (balaclava if its really really cold), warm gloves (two pairs if needed). I keep warm lined felt slippers at school to change into when I get there and wear big woolly socks over my normal socks. I still sometimes have to turn the thermostat up in the classroom though.

Kbroughton · 07/12/2023 19:35

You sound like a grumpy old woman. At nearly 50, I smile when I see younger people wearing next to nowt and remember going out in crop tops etc in Cumbria in winter. It's a right of passage. I work in a hospital and it's always boiling. So you wear layers. Stop getting your thermal knickers in a knot and relax.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/12/2023 19:36

Pipistrellus · 07/12/2023 18:32

And the place should be cool enough that a person dressed for winter with warm socks, boots, long sleeved top and a jumper, doesn't have to change on arrival.

Well it depends. If that perso is menopausal and having hot flushes or is otherwise feeling hotter than other people, then yes, that person has to take some layers off so the colder people can be comfortable WITH their jumpers on.

Have you tried merino? It most definitely is not "horrible scratchy stuff".

It's not the lack of proper clothing which irritates people, it's that COMBINED with the same people moaning about being cold/wet and demanding the heating be turned up just for them. Surely that's not hard to understand??? I didn't dress appropriately when I was young, but I didn't moan about it because I wasn't really cold.

Maybe you could try relaxing yourself - you might actually read posts properly then.

Yes, if they run hot they probably wouldn't be wearing a jumper under their coat anyway. I guess I meant someone should be able to just remove any outside clothing (coat, hat, scarf, gloves), but not have to change clothing. I am dressed warmly in winter because I get cold outside, I don't want to have to strip everything off inside!

It shouldn't be hot like summer, but if the cold people can cope with their layers and jumpers on it means some hot people are going to be in lighter clothing.

I live abroad and people don't do it here. It's not a right of passage that everyone has to go through, it's just a bit stupid.

LoobyDop · 07/12/2023 19:58

I find all kinds of wool, including merino and cashmere, too itchy to wear next to my skin. I don’t know why that’s hard to believe. I wear wool jackets and coats, but knitwear has to be cotton or silk- annoying, as it’s not that easy to find.

I don't disagree. I would expect hot people to be in lighter clothing already though. I need warm clothing in winter as I really feel the cold outside when it's under 5 degrees.

I would take a jumper off if I was hot inside but I wouldn't be happy if it was too hot for a long sleeved top, wool socks and boots.

Pipistrellus · 07/12/2023 20:35

Thinking about it, how do people who feel the cold but don't dress warmly cope outside? Even if I had an incredibly warm coat over summer clothing my ankles would freeze in trainer socks!

artsperson · 07/12/2023 20:55

Cashmere is toasty warm and lasts for years. Layers is the way to dress in cold weather@

I’m averse to them all.

The only truly non allergenic fibre is silk. All hair and wool fibres have scales on them which is what causes irritation. A lot of people can’t wear wool/hair fibres, they are the worst tolerated of all fibres. Even Merino causes problems.

I used to lecture Textile Science.

Silk is a very warm and insulating fibre. I hoard silk shirts/tops.

hmmm what was l saying about moral superiority?🤔

Im allowed to maintain my heating at a comfortable level for me. I can’t wear and fucking hate itchy jumpers and itchy polyester thermals.

22 degrees is a normal indoor temperature winter.

Wahtnow · 07/12/2023 21:05

Why is it that the same people who insist on sky high heating in winter also want the aircon set to freezing in summer?

My XILs were like that. You'd have to remove your jumper in winter and bring a jumper in summer!
