Adults who don't dress properly for winter

Driving me mad.
I work in an office where must people have a commute or a decent walk to get to work . I'd say about 90% can't dress themselves properly.
Young woman next to me ankle trainer socks. Midriff showing. Pissing and moaning about being cold. It's 1 degree outside and it's December.
It's raining and they come in wearing canvas shoes and a fluffy coat. No umbrella or waterproofs. Then expect to have the heating on full whack all day to dry their coats and shoes out.
In a training room all day where the lead trainer (middle aged, old enough to know better) insisted on having the heating cranked up all day because she's wearing a thin acrylic jumper and got cold to the bones on the way to work and can't warm up.
Everyone without exception has access to the weather forecast via their phones. It shouldn't be a shock when it's raining or cold. Yet they dress like it's May, all year round.
They earn decent money and aren't hard up so it's not a financial issue (maybe with some of the VERY junior/ young ones fair enough )

AIBU to fed up of people moaning about being cold or wet but making zero attempt to dress appropriately for the weather ?

What pisses me off is arriving at work in sub zero temperatures to find the office aircon going at full whack. Why?

I kept my coat on until lunchtime because the controls are in a locked cupboard in another office. I emailed our facilities manager to request that the aircon is switched off only to get it bounced back because he is on holiday Sad

I was wearing jeans, boots and a thick jumper BTW.

MatineeLaughs · 06/12/2023 22:02

I thought it was just me getting old.

The amount of young (ish) women I’ve seen in trainers with no socks / in trainer socks in 2 degree weather! It doesn’t look ‘cool’, it looks bloody ridiculous

<channels my Nan>

Bearpawk · 06/12/2023 22:04

Exactly @MatineeLaughs Some are even wearing trainer socks with shorts today. And moaning they're cold after a 30 minute walk to work. No shit ! 😂

How does it affect you OP?

22 is on the cool side for an office in winter ime, depending on where the thermostat is.

22 is on the cool side?! 😆Have you got confused and you're talking about your air con setting in Dubai or somewhere?

I work in a school office. It was 14 degrees in there on Monday morning. Took all day to warm up to about 19.

RampantIvy · 06/12/2023 21:55

Erm. It's common sense isn't it?

Erm. No, buying natural fabrics, waterproof footwear, layering up etc is not something we are born knowing, it is something we are taught. If we are lucky.

AtomicBlondeRose · 06/12/2023 22:05

I will say whenever I see “looks for the season” online or in shops I always think they look like not enough clothes! Short sleeved tops under blazers, sleeveless dresses, ankle trousers with trainers, unlined dresses…none of it even nearly warm enough, even at work. So if people think that’s what you’re meant to wear they will be cold. I wear slips, thick tights and thermals but you never see them mentioned anywhere and thermal layers aren’t exactly fashionable or sold in fashionable shops except Uniqlo.

Bearpawk · 06/12/2023 22:06

Agree 22 is not on the cool side, surely temperature is a unit of measurement so doesn't matter if it's summer or winter ?
Out of interest, those who think 22 degrees is cold; what temperature do you run your central heating to at home ?

@NorthernSpirit
So pleased to hear that you felt cuddly in your excessively expansive designer winter gear.

Do please enlighten us with how poor people should approach the winter months.

I'm all ears...

Wahtnow · 06/12/2023 22:08

A proper coat that really does its job (ie keeps out the wind, rain and cold) is life changing, but you can see from these boards that very many adults would rather be uncomfortable than wear something they don't consider stylish. I can only assume that most don't realise just how much difference it makes.

dovelynn · 06/12/2023 22:08

I was in a shopping center on Monday and there was a young woman (maybe 18/19) in denim shorts, a strappy midriff showing vest top and summer sandals. Monday was FREEEZING. (In Dublin). Fair enough maybe she drove to the mall but she looked so ridiculous.

I also agree with the pp who said she didnt understand warm clothes till her 30's. Somehow that was me too. Could never bridge the gap between warmth and not looking terrible, now I'm in my 40's i have more money but also don't care what i look like.

How many people can afford merino wool, North Face and Timberlands as a staple do you think? And enough to rotate and wear every day for a few weeks of cold weather?

Ofgs. I am dressed head to toe secondhand but warmly. It does NOT take money and you need three outfits tops.

HP89 · 06/12/2023 22:10

I run hot generally. It drives me mad when I have taken off all my layers to try and cool down, but the inappropriately dressed insist on blasting heating. Put on a bloody jumper, I can’t take off any more clothes!! It seems being cold trumps being boiling. Now I am pregnant and feeling extra sick in sweltering rooms it’s driving me insane. But yet if the room isn’t warmed for the coldest person it’s considered cruel.

Totally agree with you. This really pisses me off.

Man in town today (2 degrees) wearing shorts, t shirt and flip flops). Knobhead was a word that sprung to mind when I saw him.

I on the other hand was wearing a thermal vest, merino wool jumper, North Face jacket and Timberland knee high boots. I felt very snug & toasty.

@NorthernSpirit

and WTF does how a stranger, outside, not demanding you heat the space he's in have to do with you?

why do you feel smug?

Ok please do tell what those items are. Let’s say 2 weeks of cold weather, must be suitable for office, day to day and dog walks.

Fizbosshoes · 06/12/2023 22:11

I work in a practical job (think industrial/warehouse type setting rather than office). My old workplace was pretty massive and really cold and difficult to heat. Once it was 8° when we went back after a 2 week break at Christmas. It was pretty unpleasant until it warmed up slightly but one guy (in his 60s) wore a shirt and thin trousers all year round and complained when it was cold. It was really cold but why on earth would you not wear at least another layer?? . There was no dress code and most people wore hoodie, thick jumpers, sweatshirts etc ....except the guy in his shirt!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/12/2023 22:11

Bearpawk · 06/12/2023 22:01

It affects me because they're whinging all day about being cold which is annoying / tedious to listen to, and cranking the heating up to unbearable levels to try and thaw out.

Just reply everytime

"Well you should try wearing a jumper"

Or

"Haven't you got your thermals on?"

Was he moaning about being cold, though? If not, I'd just presume he's the type not to feel it. I certainly wouldn't think someone merely going about their day was "a knob head" just because I didn't "approve" of his choice of clothing. How about people just do them.

AtomicBlondeRose · 06/12/2023 22:13

Here’s a snapshot from the ASOS “winter and cold weather essentials” page. Some individual warm things but not a warm outfit among them!

I work with teenagers who wear Converse and hoodies and complain they’re cold. I come in bundled up and warm but they’d rather die than wear a woolly hat. I don’t think I really got warm clothes until my 30s either tbh.

Rosecutting · 06/12/2023 22:13

YANBU
the same sort of people will be sitting at home in a t shirt with the heating on full whack then they moan about the utility bill.

It’s all to do with entitlement and refusing to take responsibility for oneself.
Someone else is always to blame.

Young people don’t want to schlep around in anoraks and wellies OP. I bet you didn’t in your early 20s. As for the rest of it I’ll be told I’m daft but I think dressing for the weather AND work is quite difficult. A cold dog walk, no problem - thick hoodie, thick leggings, coat over the top. A freezing office? Errr… work trousers and what? You can end up with 5 pairs of work shoes just to fit the weather as well as thermals etc and not everyone has the money or space for all that.

I wear basically the same work dresses all year round, with a Merino wool cardi and tights (M&S, not expensive like cashmere) and boots in winter. IMO a skirt with good tights and long boots is much warmer than trousers, but if you prefer trousers the same thing re cardi and socks.

You wear what you like, obviously, but you asked.

tachycardigan · 06/12/2023 22:13

I love getting my winter gear out in December. I have every conceivable item to keep out the cold. DH doesn’t feel the cold as much and I cringe when he’s out in just a jumper and I’m always warm and comfortable.

Inca22 · 06/12/2023 22:14

@megletthesecond that's me. What's the matter with that? I'm never cold. I get in my car, get into work - not outside for more than 5mins

ShyTed · 06/12/2023 22:15

There was a thread on here a couple of weeks ago from someone who was surprised they were cold after not wearing a coat…

Your workplace can’t be that cold then because if I wore my shift dresses with a cardi over the top I would freeze! That’s not warm dressing in my book.

Flobbyblob · 06/12/2023 22:15

Yanbu. I told an important client on a call today that ‘there is more you can do’ to keep warm as his heating had broken and he was sitting in his open neck shirt with a coat on!

im old enough to nag ppl about clothing. I find it bonkers that people are so dumb! I wear layers and layers in winter.
