Adults who don't dress properly for winter

Driving me mad.
I work in an office where must people have a commute or a decent walk to get to work . I'd say about 90% can't dress themselves properly.
Young woman next to me ankle trainer socks. Midriff showing. Pissing and moaning about being cold. It's 1 degree outside and it's December.
It's raining and they come in wearing canvas shoes and a fluffy coat. No umbrella or waterproofs. Then expect to have the heating on full whack all day to dry their coats and shoes out.
In a training room all day where the lead trainer (middle aged, old enough to know better) insisted on having the heating cranked up all day because she's wearing a thin acrylic jumper and got cold to the bones on the way to work and can't warm up.
Everyone without exception has access to the weather forecast via their phones. It shouldn't be a shock when it's raining or cold. Yet they dress like it's May, all year round.
They earn decent money and aren't hard up so it's not a financial issue (maybe with some of the VERY junior/ young ones fair enough )

AIBU to fed up of people moaning about being cold or wet but making zero attempt to dress appropriately for the weather ?

Yanbu. Loads of people seem to have no clue about how to stay warm and which fabrics are best for winter,i.e cotton is hopeless in the cold. Think it might be partially because of people bring cossettted in over heated homes when growing up. I wouldn’t dream of driving anywhere in winter without taking a coat with me. What if you break down or have an accident? It is basic safety. 🤔

What’s wrong with ‘being cosseted in an overheated home?’

Why is it morally wrong? My home is a cosseting temperature. I like it line that and can afford it. Why would l choose to sit in 17 degrees..

How does it affect you OP?

22 is on the cool side for an office in winter ime, depending on where the thermostat is.

22 is 22 whether it’s winter or not. And it’s on the warm side.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/12/2023 17:55

I agree @ArseInTheCoOpWindow. I rather like ‘being cosseted in an overheated home’ and while I cab afford to do it I will.

And it’s all very well to say that cotton is hopeless but what should be wearing? I can’t bear wool, it’s horrible scratchy stuff so that’s a a definite no.

I can’t wear wool, l have eczema. Eczema which is often aggravated by cold. I can’t wear polyester thermals either, it makes me itch.

So many morally superior comments on here.

scotvic · 07/12/2023 18:12

YANBU I am also amazed by the number of people (especially women, tbh) that don’t seem to understand about clothes and weather! I suppose some people can’t afford a decent coat or sturdier shoes for winter, so I’d be more sympathetic to them. I also had to accept that teachers coming in for a training day are used to a hotter working environment and are also used to moving about quite energetically rather than sitting still at a table all day, so we specifically ask them on their booking confirmation form to bring a cardigan or a fleece. (Seems weird to me that anyone would set off by car or train for a whole day, crossing half of Scotland to get here, in just a light top, without thinking to bring an extra layer just in case.)

fetchacloth · 07/12/2023 18:14

Totally agree OP to the point of being exasperated myself. 🙄
When I went into town this afternoon It was pissing down with rain many people were not wearing a coat, getting soaked, just ridiculous. It had been raining all day so shouldn't have been a surprise really.
Also many women wearing thin plimsolls with barely there trainer socks moaning about having cold feet. As a young person I would have had no sympathy for having chilblains dressed like that and rightly so.
One shop I went into, the lady in front of me at the till, looked like a drowned rat (no coat, ballet pump shoes, no hosiery), complained to the till assistant about the lack of heating in the shop. The temperature in the shop was fine, a bit warm if anything, but there's no pleasing some people.
I felt like saying FFS it's December, not June, it's 6C and raining, but managed to hold back.

That would be a little too hot for me but bearable. Some of my colleagues would wish it to be 30C so they could wear their summer clothes 🙄

Trufflemarmite · 07/12/2023 18:17

Overheated homes = bad for the planet for a start. And has nobody on here heard of fleece or M and S beautiful thermal tops?!!

A lot of ignorance on here too, never mind morally superior

Closetheblinds · 07/12/2023 18:19

You sound like the most fun person in your office 👀

fetchacloth · 07/12/2023 18:19

@Trufflemarmite I can recommend the M&S thermal tops too. They are a great alternative to having the heating on during the day. I also wear these when going out walking.

Poodles23 · 07/12/2023 18:19

I totally agree. I see people outside in short sleeved t-shirts and I’ve got 3 layers on plus a thick coat because it is VERY cold. I have to wonder if their internal thermostat is out of order because it doesn’t make sense. Even worse is when they wear next to nothing inside but then put the heating on full blast. I am definitely not a climate change advocate but it’s pure waste of gas and electricity- just put a jumper on🥶. Maybe they don’t pay the bills - if they did I would imagine they’d wear more clothing.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/12/2023 21:44

While I agree to an extent, I would expect the place to be warm enough to not have to wear an oodie.

No, but they should have proper jumpers on at least.

ALongHardWinter · 07/12/2023 18:21

What gets me is the people who dress like it's 25 degrees outside, when it's actually 5 degrees, then get on a stuffy, airless bus and start slamming every bastard window shut! I feel like saying to them 'Why don't you wear warmer clothes then you wouldn't object to the merest waft of air on your skin?!'.

I wear jumpers over a cotton top, they aren't in contact with my skin.

No, but they should have proper jumpers on at least.

And the place should be cool enough that a person dressed for winter with warm socks, boots, long sleeved top and a jumper, doesn't have to change on arrival.

Pipistrellus · 07/12/2023 18:27

You must have a very high neck and long cuffs on your blouse. My wrists get really irritated by wool and jumpers always slip down over blouses at the wrists.

fetchacloth · 07/12/2023 18:33

MatineeLaughs · 06/12/2023 22:02

I thought it was just me getting old.

The amount of young (ish) women I’ve seen in trainers with no socks / in trainer socks in 2 degree weather! It doesn’t look ‘cool’, it looks bloody ridiculous

<channels my Nan>

Totally agree.
Not only does it look uncool, but rain-soaked trainers look scruffy and unkempt. I feel like saying FGS get some proper shoes or boots that keep your feet dry and warm.

ellyeth · 07/12/2023 18:34

Yes, it's very silly, annoying and not particularly healthy to have the heating on very high.

Some of us are allergic to m and s beautiful fleece tops.

It's a perfectly normal long sleeved stretch cotton top. I wouldn't wear a scoop neck or similar top in the winter as I get cold if my neck is exposed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/12/2023 18:39

You have to be joking. I used to wear my ciat to teach it was so cold. Sleet used to blow in through the (closed) windows. And a few years of of pathetic ventilation to mitigate Covid by having all windows open in mid winter is not exactly warm.

Pipistrellus · 07/12/2023 18:40

A collared shirt under a wool jumper would also stop wool touching skin, but I normally find a crew neck top to be fine.
