On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

I knew that bedroom looked familiar! Forest holidays?

Thank you!! I was thinking Center Parcs but there was no carpet. even if you have a dog friendly lodge there’s still carpet in the bedrooms

👍

What's even weirder is that op didn't need to post fake pics. It was odd but plausible without them.

Pretending she is in Landes. It's the strangest thing ever to lie about. So random. And the furry brother/dog in EasyJet high viz jacket detail. Why??? 😵‍💫

I hear that. Last place you want toothache, in a strange country. Hope something is done for her soon.

Me third toothache is a bitch at the best of times!

However, from OP’s username, location and the dog being there, unless the dog has pet passport etc are the family French so therefore not in a foreign country? Either way if you’re away from home even in the same country you’re from/live in, if you’re not near your usual dentist/doctor/pharmacy then dealing with illness but especially toothache is a nightmare.

Why would a pilot have a high viz?
Why would a cabin in France have a U.K. plug socket?

I’m now over invested.

FWIW the hi viz is about the only thing that is credible...most places it's required wearing when performing the pre-flight walk round inspection of the aircraft.

Divebar2021 · 05/12/2023 08:27

Yeah mum has my sympathy… I had a tooth abscess while away staying with my in-laws and ended up having to drive to an out of hours Dr in the middle of the night for the good drugs.

LuciaPillson · 05/12/2023 08:30

So what we know so far is that the Easyjet brother is a dog/weredog/werewolf/werepilot, so I'm thinking the father is a stag's head over the fireplace, the mother is a hand-knitted tea cosy, the sister is an owl who keeps looking through the window and OP is a princess under a curse who must post false details of every holiday on the Internet until kissed by a brawny huntsman. I'm assuming sister's boyfriend is the Judderman.

LuciaPillson · 05/12/2023 08:31

Who will show up any minute. Juddering.

DriftingDora · 05/12/2023 08:33

Louez, Definitely could do better, keep working on the creative writing course. Enough holes in this story to use as a colander.

'My brother flies for EasyJet' - of course he does, but why doesn't he use a plane?

EauDeGnome · 05/12/2023 08:46

What a lot of doubting penises you are.

Zut alors!

Les vacances de forêt!

Ilianor · 05/12/2023 09:10

Maybe, to be kind, the OP just changed the country to France to avoid anyone recognising her in RL.

FrenchandSaunders · 05/12/2023 09:18

This is funny!

Presumably if your DB is an easyjet pilot you would have got cheap/free flights ... but as the dog is there you must have driven .... (to Forest Holidays).

Well spotted, Holmes! I knew it wasn't P.I. or Travelodge, wrong colour scheme, and besides they always have carpets, or at least they have in all the ones I've stayed in.

Honestly, though, what a bizarre thread!

Don't be silly, @FrenchandSaunders -- it is clear that the 'dog' is in fact the unusually hirsute pilot brother. Or that he's a werewolf in hi-vis. I may have got confused.

Maybe the mother's toothache is a suggestion that she's been bitten and is about to transform. Maybe everyone is, and that's why they're all silent and out of sorts.

It's not the same, though. The Forest Holidays rooms don't seem to have that shelf between the beds.

Arggghhhhhhhh · 05/12/2023 11:45

This is hilarious - also over invested.

SignoraItaliana · 05/12/2023 12:03

This sounds very much like the start to a film I watched recently on Netflix, only it was a couple, not a family, and they arrived at their holiday home in Italy, exhausted and ratty with each other. Then strange things started happening and they both blamed each other and in the end it turned out that the landlord was a voyeur and so were all his mates in the village and I think everyone ended up dead.

Here's hoping your holiday is better than that, OP, UK plug socket or not.

Ah now you aren't putting enough insane dedication and energy into this thread or you'd have been googling "Forest Holidays" twin bedrooms for hours (not that I personally would waste my time in such a manner), and found copious evidence of varying styles of between-bed shelves or tables. Not that it's necessary as there's very clearly a shelf in the pic that @Snowplop posted.

PrimitivePerson · 05/12/2023 12:13

I love the amount of detective work going into this! I expect an exact location for the room by the end of the day. :)

Then we can organise a private dentist for poor mum with toothache.

Perhaps someone on the ground in the Landes will turn up a 'British Holiday Experience' theme park which has even thought of UK-style plug points for the full immersion experience.

Mariposista · 05/12/2023 12:28

Are you all grown up adults going on holiday with mum and dad?

My first thought is, why??

What a strange thing to say!!

It's not unusual for parents and grown-up kids to enjoy spending time together. The kids are my favourite people in the world to spend time with! I would rather holiday with them than with anyone else.

@Louez make the most of it, is my advice!

First day is always awful IME. As others have said, everyone needs to decompress after a tiring journey. Tomorrow is another day - just chill for now!
