On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

Yes, I can imagine it must be quite discombulating, not knowing what country you're actually in.

nutelia · 05/12/2023 12:59

I don’t think OP is coming back now :(

Its kind of a shame people noticed the inconsistencies because I want to know what direction the thread was going to head in 😂

LittleMonks11 · 05/12/2023 13:01

OP - come back! We need more story!

Mydustymonstera · 05/12/2023 13:10

This is hilarious. I jumped to page 5 to find out what on earth was worth 4 pages of discussion after the last post from Op - and the mumsnet detectives have been at it again 😂

Headband · 05/12/2023 13:29

Maybe the op is plugging Forest Holidays?

Ah well if while you are waiting you want more fun thrown into the mix I'll muddy the water further with:

Not sure you'd get a French electrician to agree to install one in a manner that would be compliant with the French wiring code etc but I gather one or two French resident British DIY'ers have installed the odd one in their houses for occasional use of UK kit.

Maybe it was a cipher. Maybe she was trying to tell us something

And having such a disarmingly hairy brother, who wears his hi viz in leisure time.

mapletreecottage · 05/12/2023 13:53

Imagine the shock of discovering the plane your dog, who is an airline captain, flew you on has landed in the UK and not France as planned. The OP is probably having a lie down, having got pissed on those wine cocktails.

commonground · 05/12/2023 13:55

Has this comment been explained yet? This is interesting. Did they gut the house and then leave - swiftly? Maybe that is why they are knackered. Whose house it it - it's 'a' house, not 'my' house or 'our' house. Perhaps they gutted a random house and are now hiding out in the forest for fear of discovery.

And does op mean the house looks amazing because it is empty? Which is what gutted suggests.

I've always disagreed with the Mumsnet moaners who complain about dogs being everywhere 'these days', but I tend to agree they really shouldn't be flying planes. It's not hygienic.

carddino · 05/12/2023 13:59

I'm absolutely sure this OP posted about the amazing house being done up the night before they left.

I'm sure it was about falling out with sister about rings or something and the atmosphere being awful before a long drive to France.

beanii · 05/12/2023 14:12

So you've just arrived - your dad is a stroke survivor so will be tired, your mum has toothache which is the worst, your brother has been working and you're complaining as you want tu play games?

I'd suggest you get the next flight and leave them to enjoy the holiday.

Typical MN speciesism. 🙄 Your obvious and biased opinion that dogs are 'lesser' than humans when it comes to piloting giant complicated aircraft is shining through your faux concern about 'hygiene'. It is, in fact......

A dog whistle.

DottyLottieLou · 05/12/2023 15:19

I've jumped straight to the end to find out the latest but I guess she's either enjoying herself now or gone home.

Thegoldenlion · 05/12/2023 15:28

To find your local “Déntiste de Garde” telephone 08 93 02 01 01

or in Les Landes (40) telephone 118 418 et dites “soigner”

DH had what turned out to be a dental abscess while on a lengthy stay in France. He had very good and thorough treatment, eventually saw 2 dentists (one was the local déntiste de garde) and an orthodontist but it cost 2000 euros all told and used up his medical insurance for dental treatment so he had to pay a hefty excess. He couldn’t hang on with just antibiotics and painkillers until he got back to the UK.

LittleMonks11 · 05/12/2023 15:29

Have les woke bed bugs turned up yet?

Thegoldenlion · 05/12/2023 15:33

The forests of Les Landes are notorious for snakes and spiders, seen any of them yet?

UnctuousUnicorns · 05/12/2023 15:48

I'm more wondering if the OP has found any evidence that she and her family are actually in France yet, and not a lodge in Hampshire or wherever. They must have been some seriously strong cocktails.

Oh, I was reading it the other way round, that they had slogged through the actual trip to France, trekked down to the Landes, found the grubby cabin in the forest etc, and then passed through a rip in the space-time continuum that landed them in an English hotel room.

Maireas · 05/12/2023 16:08

That's obviously what's happened, @KitchenAngst . No other explanation for why you'd have a forest break in Hampshire, yet believe you're in France and your brother is a dog in a hi vis jacket.

UnctuousUnicorns · 05/12/2023 16:13

Fly EasyPet - you'd be barking not to!

PrimitivePerson · 05/12/2023 16:49

I suppose if you believe what Darwin came up with, dogs will eventually evolve to the point where they can fly planes. I'm just surprised it's happened so fast - I figured it would take another few thousand years at least.

These are truly wondrous times.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 05/12/2023 16:51

Poor doggo was probably just distracted chasing his tail and flew in a circle. It's easily done.
