On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

If you are in a Premier Inn, why aren't you just googling where to buy their bed like everyone else does?

Let everyone sleep, rest from the journey and seek medication for their illnesses for the first 24 hours.
Sleep is a wonderful tonic.
Plan to make everyone a fresh easy snack like open sandwiches under the grill or cheese toasties, cocoa, and fruit.
Tomorrow is another day.

Find a great cafe, a great market for fresh bread and vegetables, a great couple of walks, galleries, bike riding paths.
Search out some funny videos, good local wine and board games for the dark of the night..

Things will improve, especially after proper treatment for UTI, toothache and exhaustion. Treat each other extra well because you are all needing some TLC.

Are you all grown up adults going on holiday with mum and dad?

My first thought is, why??

?! an odd post?

I often go on holiday with one or other of my adult daughters, one married, one not - they're good company? Why would 'adults going on holiday with mum' deserve such a sneery comment?

We bought a Premier Inn mattress during lockdown. It's a grave disappointment.

I think five hot toddlers is the last thing this thread needs.

Especially hot werewolf toddlers in high viz!

Have you considered being a writer, or are you already a writer, you seem to have the start of a good story here, people are tired and not getting on, off in their own little selfish worlds,, but something lurks in the woods, not quite human.................and you will have to band together if you want to survive the night.........!

You must read some really badly written books.

Pop a bottle of wine and clean anything that feels grubby, like toilet and sinks.

let people relax… don’t stress. Go for a walk!

Don't use wine for cleaning! You can use the cola to clean the toilet, though.

Well spotted snow plop.
Miraculously transported to Les Landes.
Magnifique!

Clydagh · 05/12/2023 07:06

I was about to say that I always think the Landes has quite a strange atmosphere, but not to the point of deforming the plugs and employing canine pilots…

I’m a FOMO type person which I know just sets everything up for a fall.

You're more of a make shit up on the internet type of person

Arrival day is often tricky. Hopefully everyone will wake up refreshed and cheerful tomorrow.

Agree with this. I think also that when we're not used to sharing living space with people it takes at least 24 hours to adjust to that too.

Could be a perfect storm of lots of little niggles OP after a day travelling (don't forget that in itself is tiring) so hopefully after a good nights sleep it will get better x

Yeah, maybe the OP will actually wake up in France, being brought croissants by her smiley family.

Your mother has done a plane journey with toothache? Poor bugger. That's going to make her really miserable unless something can be done for her.

Ahh. I missed this detail. God toothache is tye worse and it must be hellish on holiday. Your poor mum.

Crikey, it’s an exact match! OP, why are you passing off a UK holiday as a French one?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 05/12/2023 07:43

Doh
Totally missed the socket Grin

Zonder · 05/12/2023 07:49

Your poor family.

Dad has had a stroke and dozing.
Mum has toothache - my sympathy lies with her!
Sis has a UTI
Bro is knackered after work
OP wants everyone to be jolly and play a game.

How did you get there? Did someone drive?
Grow up and learn to chill and occupy yourself for one evening while everyone rests.
