Milkshake story den.

Why are we reading books about pride, gender and drag to pre-school children.

Because my 2 year old doesn't need to be brainwashed about gender politics. Also doesn't need to know what drag is, considering it's adult entertainment

You'r not real are you...

grandadspride · 01/12/2023 09:52

Reported for stating facts you don’t like? Or for pointing out a highly inappropriate book shouldn’t be read to preschoolers?

Reported for transphobia in general.
I agree that the images in the book are inappropriate - toddlers don't need to see that sort of outfit on any body, but they do need to learn that LGTBTQA+ people are as acceptable as anyone else.
It's not a fact to state that a trans man is a woman, it's an opinion.

It's your truth, this thread is being reported.

Hi @sollenwir , gender critical views - including that sex is binary, and immutable (ie people cannot change sex, so trans men are still women and trans women are still men) are legally protected under the Equality Act 2010 following appeal case of Forstater v CGD Europe.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/12/2023 09:54

Completely age inappropriate - and so important that parents are aware that BDSM is being pushed at even the youngest of children. So let's hope this thread isn't pushed off to the naughty corner board but is left so that everyone can discuss the representation of fetish gear in books for toddlers.
It's an important reminder that there's currently a relentless assault on children and safeguarding.

heathspeedwell · 01/12/2023 09:54

I'm all for age-appropriate sex education but this is not it. Those MAP references are chilling.

Even the drag element is totally inappropriate for children.

Men dressing up as an oppressed group to make fun of them wasn't ok when it was minstrel shows and it isn't ok when it's drag.

Drag has been around for ages. Talk about S&M outfits if you like but calm yourself about drag.

There is a huge difference between the “men in womens clothing” actors and traditional pantomime characters you list and the overtly sexual and, with in many cases, offensive attitudes towards women - Cheryl Hole anyone - that many drag performers display as part of their act. Yes more explicit drag acts have been around for many years,, but they were generally confined to clubs and bars where adults were assumed to be the audience, not on Childrens tv, or tots story time in the local library, or even on mainstream tv.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/12/2023 09:55

What's depressing is there could be a really lovely heartwarming story about a Grandad going to Pride and finally being able to celebrate being gay that would be liked by the majority of the UK population but instead they decided to put the grandad in BDSM wear, overstepping all sorts of boundaries and making it unacceptable.

Why is it so difficult for these authors to understand boundaries around children are there for safeguarding reasons? It's really not hard is it. Gay characters in picture books = good. Characters of any sexuality wearing sex gear in picture books = bad.

Right, as are the rights of trans people.

You think there's no difference between a pantomime dame, or men wearing dresses, and a drag act?

Drag is not for children.

Adult entertainment is the whole point.

It's your truth, this thread is being reported.

Here we go...someone has a different opinion to you - she's not being rude, just stating her opinion - and you have to go and report them?
I thought you were all about tolerance of people who are different?
Clearly you want to live in a echo chamber, surrounded only by opinions similar to your own.
MN is a discussion forum. Not everyone is going to agree on everything, but the point of MN is discussion.

grandadspride · 01/12/2023 09:56

It's not a fact to state that a trans man is a woman, it's an opinion.

This is subjectively and objectively incorrect.

A trans man is an adult human female. They may not accept that about themselves and believe themselves to be male, but you are the one conflicting fact with belief. One can ‘believe’ they’re the wrong sex but it will not change the fact. It’s nothing to do with opinion. Personally, if an adult wishes to identify as trans, I wouldn’t say ‘yes but you’re actually a woman/man’ to them in general conversation but reality doesn’t change just because someone needs validation.

grandadspride · 01/12/2023 09:59

@sollenwir I genuinely believe you think you're being inclusive and kind etc, but I don't believe you're applying any critical thinking.

I'm looking forward to "Grandad's Orange March" and "Granny's Pro-Life Demo". With illustrations. (Yes that was sarcasm.)

What are the airheads who promote these books thinking of? Minds so open their brains fall out.
