No petrol

I have to pick up Dd from school ( very close by) then Dh (15 minute drive) from work. His car is in the garage so has been using mine (our other one) he drove to work the last couple of mornings, when he got out of the car, I started to drive home and saw there was literally no petrol in the car, it was on one last bar that means it’s low but ok, that bar has gone now…does this mean zero petrol or enough for me to pick him up (15 min drive) stupidly he has the wallet with cards and cash in (one of those days)
Will I be able to make it to him?

If it’s a 15 minute drive it can’t be that long a walk for him? An hour?

That would be pretty slow driving (or very fast walking, and if it's in heavy traffic it's more likely to be an urban area with public transport.

User136921 · 30/11/2023 18:15

I would in the summer but not in the freezing cold in case I got stuck

JanuaryBug · 30/11/2023 18:25

Why can't you add a card to your phone wallet? It's really that simple...

BoobyDazzler · 30/11/2023 18:27

Can’t you just pay on your phone? Do people really still get their cards out to pay for things?

botheredand · 30/11/2023 18:29

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 17:28

Of COURSE you will make it with the petrol on the 'final bar!'

Even when the little light is flashing you still have a gallon!

It's so handy they only make one type of car made in the same year with all the same features!

Every car is different, some have no reserve fuel. Some the light comes on and then the car stops. It's not a good idea to find out what reserve your car has in winter with a child.

Yes, of course, it's a whole load easier than using a phone from what I've seen.

@MrsMenmen Are you sure?! Only need to get me there, then he has the money and petrol station not far
Theres no bars, light was on ages ago
It got me to Dds school and back, have to go in ten minutes to pick him up.It’s risk it or try at the petrol station, which sounds really embarrassing

What do you mean “risk it”? You mean steal it? They won’t give it to you for free because your husband is an idiot.
also would not pick him up as he didn’t put petrol in and taken payment (why does he have your card? Why doesn’t he use his own? Why don’t you have it on your phone?)

I use cards. They are smaller than a phone and fit in my back pocket

Yes. Its the new till rage. Waiting for someone faff about with their phone. Its like when folk used to count out the smash,

L0bstersLass · 30/11/2023 19:02

You've risked it haven't you @Yikerswhatalife .
You should have left him to make his own way home.
Staying at home would have been a perfetly valid option.
So what if it inconveniences him, he should have had more respect for you than to put you in such a position.
He learns nothing by you risking things by going to collect him.

User136921 · 30/11/2023 19:15

Cards are much easier than a phone, I have all my cards on my phone, just in case but always use a card as it's quicker

HideTheCroissants · 30/11/2023 19:19

kitsuneghost · 30/11/2023 18:59

Yes. Its the new till rage. Waiting for someone faff about with their phone. Its like when folk used to count out the smash,

Using my phone is quicker than using my card. Phone payment - pick up phone, pass it in front if my face, tap it, done. Card payment - get purse out of bag, open purse, find card I want to use, tap it, then sometimes it says insert and enter pin. Also my phone is more secure. Anyone can tap my card. Someone could even “shoulder surf” and get my pin. BUT you need my face to use my phone for payment!

Anyway that doesn’t help OP in this situation. She definitely shouldn’t be picking up the idiot partner who left her with no fuel AND no access to money.

You need to have the card or know the long number (and other details) to add it. If she had the card....well.....

She phones her husband, who reads out the card details to her.

HerMammy · 30/11/2023 19:29

I'd be rethinking your car usage all round, driving to a very near school and collecting DH, can he walk or get a bus?

Dinkydoo17 · 30/11/2023 19:37

It's a 15 minute drive only, so he can walk can't he. No problem with that. It may focus his mind on the petrol situ in future.

Yikerswhatalife · 30/11/2023 19:40

Ended up filling in and apologising to the stony faced woman that I’d be back with it in less than half an hour
Told Dh I’m never doing that again
What a day

You did not need to do it once. You are a doormat.

So, why did you not juts add a card to your phones wallet?

Yes people do really still get their cards out to pay for things. I do, DP does, my friends do. I personally don't like trying to dig my phone out of my bag at the till, then trying to get it back in the phone pocket after paying, I always feel at risk of dropping it. I'd much rather just get out my purse and use a card, neither of which will break if I drop them.

Dinkydoo17 · 30/11/2023 19:50

I may be making something out of nothing here as I've been subject to financial abuse and controlling behaviour from the ex husband... but.... I'm concerned you refer to 'the wallet' and he took it to get coffee. So he left you all day with no access to money and responsible for child care. What if there was an accident or something urgent. Please look at self reliance and take care not to be in this position again. You deserve better xx

RichardMarxisinnocent · 30/11/2023 19:53

Presumably if you just pick up your phone, it doesn't live in your bag? Mine does, and as I almost always use the same card to pay for everything, which is always kept in the same slot in my purse (so no time spent finding it), phone and card take pretty much the same time for me

Jk987 · 30/11/2023 19:54

You urgently need Apple Pay on your phone. Why do you share a wallet? Are you not allowed one each? You are two separate individuals you know!
