No petrol

I have to pick up Dd from school ( very close by) then Dh (15 minute drive) from work. His car is in the garage so has been using mine (our other one) he drove to work the last couple of mornings, when he got out of the car, I started to drive home and saw there was literally no petrol in the car, it was on one last bar that means it’s low but ok, that bar has gone now…does this mean zero petrol or enough for me to pick him up (15 min drive) stupidly he has the wallet with cards and cash in (one of those days)
Will I be able to make it to him?

You did not need to do it once. You are a doormat.

Indeed. Honestly he wouldn't have melted having to make his own fucking way home. The fact you risked getting stuck in a broken down car with your child and filling up the car despite having no way of paying is just mind-blowing.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 30/11/2023 19:57

I would probably risk it. Quite snowy here which might put me off. I've often done 5/6 miles with my car showing 0 miles left to the petrol centre and not run out so out would have gone further. I think most cars are less accurate when there is only a bit of fuel left and are set up to err on the side of caution. Mine can be showing 10 miles left when I park at home and then go straight to 0 when I start the ignition the next day. Just to stress me out!

I liked my old, dilapidated beast better. I could do at least 20 miles after the light started flashing. I was in competition with myself to see how many miles I could get out of a tank. The poor thing was a ton can on wheels and it couldn't drive up hills but I always knew where I stood on petrol.

Ended up filling in and apologising to the stony faced woman that I’d be back with it in less than half an hour
Told Dh I’m never doing that again
What a day

You put petrol on your car knowing you cannot pay for it??? That is really really shocking

Phone payment - pick up phone, pass it in front if my face, tap it, done. Card payment - get purse out of bag, open purse, find card I want to use, tap it, then sometimes it says insert and enter pin
Presumably if you just pick up your phone, it doesn't live in your bag? Mine does, and as I almost always use the same card to pay for everything, which is always kept in the same slot in my purse (so no time spent finding it), phone and card take pretty much the same time for me

Apple Watch double tap side button = done. I had to actually look for my card the other day as I never use it

You filled up and drove off without paying? You're bloody lucky they didn't call the police.

So, why did you not juts add a card to your phones wallet?

This is the 3rd time I've said this - on my iPhone (assume android will be similar) you either need to scan the actual card or enter the long card number etc. OP didn't have any cards, so can't 'just add a card'.

My phone is usually in my pocket or in the phone pocket of my bag which (for me) is easier to locate instantly by touch than my purse. So I suppose the convenience of card v. phone is a personal thing. I still think my phone is more secure though (and I often don’t take my handbag out with me if just going for a walk or popping to the local shops).

Either way my husband wouldn’t dream of walking off with my cards or my phone (all joint anyway).

Now thay would be faster than a card, but I'm an android user and I don't have a smartwatch.

I rarely take my purse (with all my cards in) these days.
Depending on where I am my phone will be in my back pocket, inside coat pocket or in my bag.
I need my thumb print to pay.
My purse is quite big and is never in my pocket, and opening it and removing the card to pay Contactless is definitely more time. But it's seconds difference.

You urgently need Apple Pay on your phone. Why do you share a wallet? Are you not allowed one each? You are two separate individuals you know!

OP says 'he doesn't usually take my wallet' (or similar) i.e she has her own, but her husband accidentally took it.

You don’t have to PHYSICALLY have the card. Her DH could have given her the details over the phone.

And multiple people have said she could have called her husband and got him to read out the card number so she could add it

Of course you can add a card. Her husband had the card. It would take seconds to give her the details she needed.

Some people just don't want to help themselves and would rather be utterly dramatic and take petrol with no means to pay rather then actually take responsibility and sort the problem out.

Ah yes, I think I did actually suggest that (phone the DH to get the details) above.
It's getting late!

Well more fool you.

You’re showing your husband that you’ll humiliate yourself to pander to him.

He’s left the car with no fuel, he’s taken all of your payment methods- and you’ve still collected him. Getting home should have been his problem to figure out.

Using my phone is quicker than using my card. Phone payment - pick up phone, pass it in front if my face, tap it, done. Card payment - get purse out of bag, open purse, find card I want to use, tap it, then sometimes it says insert and enter pin. Also my phone is more secure. Anyone can tap my card. Someone could even “shoulder surf” and get my pin. BUT you need my face to use my phone for payment!

Anyway that doesn’t help OP in this situation. She definitely shouldn’t be picking up the idiot partner who left her with no fuel AND no access to money.

Good for you having your phone out and ready as do i with my card. Believe me, many don't.

No, she promised to pay and then did. I can assure you it's happening up and down the country. That's why they have the forms.

It's hardly a police matter!

Yikerswhatalife · 30/11/2023 22:52

Jesus…so many of these responses 😬

I’m not in an abusive relationship, I have a wallet/purse and he doesn’t tend too as just keeps cards in his bag. He took the wallet because I always have cash/coins to get a small coffee and put it in his bag without thinking (not to be abusive) massive rush in the morning, hence the not putting in petrol which I didn’t know until it was too late and *Was pissed off about, but equally I’m not a doormat to pick him up rather than leaving him stood in the cold outside work. Yes I was pissed off and told him so, but mistakes were made-yes really annoying ones!
j didn’t steal the petrol and go 🙈I asked the lady, who wasn’t too friendly and we paid on the way home
Will have to link up the card to my phone, Jane no idea how to do that..not in the U.K. and live in a place where some cafes/restaurants still only accept cash, so probably a bit behind 😂

So why ask if you're unreasonable if you don't want a variety of answers?

Also why would he be left stood outside work, he's an adult who can presumably walk home or make alternative arrangements to get back?

Totally agree with this.
He hasn't learned a lesson @Yikerswhatalife and has massively disrespected you.
He made his problem your problem and you compromised yourself to fix it for him.
He should have made to fix it himself.

I have no idea. Some cars have a reserve, others dont. Plus, cars tend to use more fuel in winter. You might make it if you turn all heating and whatnot off, then again, you might not. It was highly unfair of the last person to use it (DH?) to leave it on totally empty, especially when you are doing him a favour and letting use your vehicle. I'd be telling him to make his own way home as you cant rely on the car to get you to him. If he complains, perhaps he'll be more considerate when the car runs low.

There's no such thing as a reserve. There's no switch to access a reserve tank. That's a motorbike thing and most of those don't have it anymore.

The fuel light normally comes on when you have around 10% fuel left. So it gives you around 30 to 40 miles before you're in trouble.
